You are missing the point DM. At least in the top tier (let's say top 10 for any speciality), residency programs are going to place superstars. Most likely from US med schools but also exceptional students from other western countries. Tier two you will get some entry from foreign graduates from carribean or another place. But it would be tough. We are talking a watered down version of specialization after a while. Forget CT surgery, Family practice will always be there.
It's tough matty, but it's not impossible. As i said i know plenty of docs who graduated from pakistan, and a couple from india/bangladesh who are now holding successful practices in almost every specialization there is. Pulmonary, cardiology, surgery, gastro-intestinal, and whatever the hell else there is. And all these people in the NY area, and there loads more all over the country. And again, graduated from abroad.
Really Sehar? Do you also know when did most of these doctors come to the US? There are huge associations from graduating doctors form other countries. India alone has cornered the market on the medical professionals in this country. Orgs like AAPI and AIMS USA have had a long standing membership. But these were the creme de la creme in India. They didn't decide to go to India from here to get into medical school. If given a choice they would have gone here and probably would have been in any competitive discipline.
Matty
Most of the docs that i know are members of APPNA, they've been here for a while and are established. :-)
I would assume that entrance into the medical field has also gotten more competitive during this time. It's a supply and demand issue.
Medical is hard everywhere, I know here in Austria, you have to do average 7-8 years of study in the university .. and afterwards 3 years of house job, beat that! ... mostly when the students are finished doctors they reach their thirties... but thats not enought, you need years and years of pratice and hard work till you can be called a real 'doctor'. Most good and successful doctors are over 50!
Best, have you checked any Muslim organisations for Qarz-e-hasana? I am sure there are some that gives Qarz-e-hasana to deserving students.

i've never heard of it before tell me more about it. is it for students in US, particularly michigan?
so much has been said on it that i really wonder why am i writing but i guess i can give u some first hand information as i recently graduated from medical college in Lahore and am currently studying for my MD exams.
If u can exactly tell me what u want to know i can give u all the replies ,the thing is basically if u do not want to pay the money here for ur med school then i can recommend a list of colleges in Pakistan if u can narrow down ur priorities as to what kind of colllege u want to enroll in.The foreign students do have a separate quota but i guess that is nothing haram or rishwat.
I know a few people who own one of the private med colleges in Lahore in case ur interested or otherwise u can check out the websites for the govt colleges.By the way the dentists do not have to do everything here its just that they have to take their exams like we doctors do and in that they have to do one year of dentistry school here,i have a couple of friends here who r doing it so trust me for that.
oh and the ratta question ,well that depends on u but do u think by memorizing things one can save human life! Most of these things will bemore clear to u once u r part of it!

yeah there is a lot i need to know. i'm willing to study hard though, helping people is what i want to do now, i'm sure. but about the dentist thing, r u sure? i know someone who has to do it all over again. and i even asked a few dentists. but maybe their cases differ or something, i dunno. i was thinking about Dow medical in Karachi, thats where the rest of my family is. the foreigners fees is still cheaper for me then compared to here. but i heard that there is a test u can take there for a scolarship, and it's supposed to be just like the SATs here, at least this is what i hear. have u been to Uni here in US, can u tell me if it's easier there or not? thanx a bunch yaar.
I'm attending med school back here in pakiland. If you need some info, pm me. I can't put my fingers thru repetitive tortures to type/re-type the whole procedure. Here's a smily to make me seem like a nice doc :)
save urself the typing and retyping, and put up the info here…if anyone asks for it, u can refer 'em to this thread
and its publically available for everyone else 2 ![]()
Easier in what terms?Frankly its much more cheaper there than here but then if u r not planning to work here then u should definitely opt for a Paki med school .Dow is good ,a private college though they had been fighting with the Karachi university grants commision for their govt approval and i think maybe they have on e by now.Although personally i would say, in Karachi, Agha khan is excellent and then there r the govt medical colleges like Sindh medical etc and Hamdard although new is liked by many .
u have to take a amedical college entry test in all the colleges now,be it a govt or a private college.
About the dentistry ,my friends here did it from lahore and now they have to take exactly the same kind of exams as doctors have to except that they have to study for a year in a college here and thats about it!maybe it varies with what kind od college one has studied in,maybe!
Hope i have answered all ur questions,if there is anything else do let me know.

about the entry test, well i heard i wouldn't have to take one, cuz i already did 11th and 12th grade here, and took the SATs to. i think the test is called FSC or something. does ne one know if u have to take it if ur a foreigner. x-commi r u a foreign student there? if u r did u take ne test and how r u paying for it?
X-Commi :) I know a girl from Windsor who went to Pakistan for her medical school. What medical college are you going to?
.
well i didn't grow up in Pakistan so i think i can relate to ur friend who grew up in america. why didn't he like it? was it to hard for him there,or was teh enviorment bad?
i heard it was hard for the students in pak cuz they don't know english that well, and everything is in english. well if it was in urdu i'd be trouble. x-commi do u know if the lectures and books r all in english? cuz i can speak urdu, and understand it, but that's about it. i wanna study there real bad, but i don't wanna risk failing if it's too hard.
I think most Doctorate programs can be deemed as hard, but the problem he had was the environment and fellow students, according to him. He said a lot of the students there were "stuck up" and there were plenty of cliques, etc. Said there was unnecessary competition in things like fashion, who's dad did what, etc. Just conveying his words, take it as you will.
No test for Gov't med schools for us foreigners. You either get in on self finance (good sum of money)...or tehy give u a treat adn slack off ur tuition fees so then you pay the same as a regular paki student. this is dependent on ur gpa/highschool percentage adn how they convert it to pakistani equivalency in Islmbd.
The lectures are in english but overall it is basically independent studying so its just you and the books. Yes, teh text is also in english..mostly american authors.
If you can afford it tho, you should go for Aga Khan or Baqai. They put your money to good use. You'll have to give your SATs for the pvt ones adn the scores for SAT I range upto 1250 ( i think) and for SAT II - 750. I think the AKU website has all the details.
humsa --danngit. small world after all. how come i dun know you? I goto DOW.
