This thread is about Makeup artists in Toronto/GTA not San Jose. If you do a search, you'll find a thread on California weddings, please post your info there. If this is an advertisement, please post in Bazaar Talk.
Does anyone have any new info on hair & bridal make up in the GTA? I went to the Kismet bridal show (on 19 Sept 2010) and quite a few make up artist had booths there. Angell was giving free trials of bridal makeup but I didn't end up liking the makeup too much. I am going to get an appointment with Kathleen to see what's like also. Any brides have any recent experiences for trials or for their weddings pls that would help? Shirley had a booth there and Lesonne bridals was there also. Thanks!
Yeah, SGC I wanted to book her for my wedding but she's already got a bride for my date and time. They can get me ready for later than I want but not earlier. I'm thinking of getting her for Mehndi makeup though - do you know if she does this herself and if so, how much she charges?

Kathleen is not good. I have seen her stuff, and I go to her to get my hair done. She is good for highlights, hair dye, etc. But not for makeup.
Thanks for the info Saimab33. Anyone recently used Xpressions or Shirley??? I have two friends who married - one a few months ago (using Xpressions - Ruby & Amber) and one two years ago (using Shirley). Both loved Xpressions and Shirley respectively. Anyone got any recent experiences with either??? Thanks!
I recently had my engagement makeup done by Shirley, and will be going to her for my wedding as well. I loved it! She contoured my face, used the right colour base, used eyeshadow colours that went with my outfit, but still complimented my skin town, and was very fast. She even fixed my eyebrows right there to make the whole look perfect! I admit, she is quite expensive, but well worth it, cause she makes you look beautiful. One of my friends recently got married, and went to Shirley, and she looked stunning.
Another of my friends got her makeup done for her wedding day by Xpressions, but she wasnt too happy with it (mind you, this was 2 years ago). It looked nice, but it wasnt WOW!! She went to Shirley for her valima (Shirley wasnt available on her wedding day), and she looked amazing on that day!
I would highly recommened Shirley. You only get married once (InshAllah!), so you wanna make sure you look perfect! Good luck!
My cousin's makeup was done by Shirley and she looked amazing on her wedding reception.. I don't live in that area but my aunt had told me that's where she had her makeup done from.
^ Shirley is definately the best. I've been trying to find an alternative these days since Shirley has to be booked soooo far in advance. & probably by the time I get married, she'll be charging crazy amounts more.
^ she already charges $500 which is crazy enough! but after seeing how my SIL looked on both wedding and valima, i fully understand why people pay her so much!
I knooo. Everyone I know has gotten their makeup done from Shirley except one of my friends so I'm probably going to end up going to her too - its the safest since she's so good and she does everything so fast :)
I have heard tho that sometimes she sends her assistant and stuff - and honestly, if I'm paying $500 I wouldn't settle for anyone less than Shirley herself.
But yup, she's totally worth it.
I actually like Noor Artistry and LeSonne aswell - haven't seen any brides by Noor in person myself but I've seen 3 brides from LeSonne and I liked all 3
My friend got her makeup by Xpressions 3 years ago and loved it and she looked great. Haven't seen any recent brides by them.
Shirley charges $120 for party makeup which is sufficient for mehendi in my opinion (the party makeup is full on heavy --> smokey eye, etc. From what I know, her assistants do the party makeup but I'm sure if you request her specifically she would)
yah shirley did my makeup for my wedding (my pic is on her fb group) and her assistants did my sister and bhabhi's makeup at the same time. $120 is pretty good for party makeup. Xpressions charged me more than that when they did my makeup on my brother's mehndi 5 years ago.
Thanks for all the info guys!!! I finally did end up booking for my wedding reception makeup with Shirley - so happy about that! I have to go to her studio and it's earlier than I wanted to get ready but that's OK. I asked them re mehndi makeup also and said I want party makeup, very light and natural and they quoted me $ 300 CAD for it! I think that's a little too much for mehndi makeup. Angell and Kathleen both quoted me $ 200 CAD. Does Shirley really charge $ 120 ish for mehndi makeup? Cause that's def not what they told me! How much is reasonable for mehndi makeup, u guys think?
I was also looking fir a make-up artist a few months ago for my wedding and referred to GS. One thing I learned is taht people will tell you all kinds of things about an MUAs attitude and what not and it may discourage you from looking into them - bad idea! Judge the artist by their work and meet them to find out for yourself. I booked Ruby and Amber from Xpressions and I thought they were great to work with and very talented.
- I chose airbrush make-up as I have blemished skin and OMG, it was amazing!
- My sisters had party make-up and hair and everything stayed in place throughout the day. They began working on us at noon and were finished by 5. The reception was at 7 and ended around 1am.
- I found them to be knowledgeable and professional in their attitude, so no complaints there.
I'm sorry I can't post pictures but if you are looking, I'd advise you to take a look at their work on FB (their website is dated) and go for a trial. That's the best way to find out.
My engagement party was a few weeks ago and I really relied on this thread to find someone. Most of these artists were booked or just charged too much! The cheapest Pakistani/Indian artist I found was $150 (extra for eyelashes) and this was after she told me she charges Pakistani brides more than White brides (around $60). I even tried to book an appointment with EVERY Mac store in Toronto but no one had any openings. 3 days before the party I decided to go with a Mac freelance artist named Kezia. She normally charges $100 but we went down to $85 and she threw eyelashes in for free and didn't charge for travelling (she came from sauga to markham) =) I was so nervous because I hadn't seen any of her work but she did an AMAZING job...I have never gotten so many compliments on my makeup before and I do a pretty good job with makeup myself...So if any one else is stuck and needs an artist msg me and I'll send you my pic and her info!
