Just curious really…a close friend of mine is wheelchair bound but in the UK its not overly bad because most places have access to him whether they be education, restuarants or clubs etc…the situation obviously isnt perfect and stigmas are still attached…my opinion on people with disabilites was one of disables people before i met my friend…
I was just wondering how people with disabilities get on in Pakistan…
not so greatly. there aren't facilities available for them in public institutes and the average joe finds it necessary to say "haw hai" to rob them of any self esteem. Also mothers are in habit of crying and collecting sympathies in front of every living relative which also makes the disabled feel even worse. It has alot to do with class that you are dealing with. I am talking about the norm. Shrinks are shunned so any help that can be seeked through that channel is also out of question. I ahve encountered so many people making a mental cripple out of a physically disable man.
It’s even worse as far as transportation in particular is concerned…
But to look on the bright side, it gives them a sense of self esteem as not being considered any different than anyone else and not be constantly reminded by handicap parkings, ramps and handicap buttons…
I have seen many successful disabled people in Pakistan and they lead happy lives…They just have a lot of friends…
Please, there’s no bright side..they’d be better off with all the help they could get..I have seen people treated in Pakistan as if they are not a part of a society at all, they are totally isloated and mostly people make sure that there’s always someone feeling sorry for them..As for here, atleast with these facilities they are equally a part of everythingthing..I am talking about the majoriti of Pakistan here…not the other 3% who are little out there…
Pakistan has more trouble than it can handle in just setting up a public school system for "mainstream" children....the educational stats are really pretty bad for typically developing kids. and while I'm sure there may be schools for "special" kids, I'm also quite sure that they're few and far between. I know one kid - physically handicapped - but otherwise quite sound - who has never been to school due to the attitudes over there about handicaps. And I've kept an eye on this since I love pak, would love to live there - but have a "special education" child...
He learns exactly what other kids his age learn. He just needs special attention and people who know how to handle a slightly autistic/ADHD child in a very small class etc. He gets this type of education here in usa in any town as a matter of course, simply because he needs it.
Over there, that would not be the case, we'd be looking and looking for a private school that MIGHT have some idea how to educate him.
If there was ever a true need for specialized career, thats it...special ed in pak.
^tsk lajjo that reasoning can be used by the disabled but not by the people who fail to make matters a little easier for them.
Considerably very small amount of disable people make it through, there are no ramps and stuff in average school and if you havent got enough money special school is out of question. Its unfortunate to have a kid who is lacking in some manner but than then knowing there is a way to help him and not getting it to him because you havent got the money causes a whole lot of frustration.
Secondly Pakistani mindset needs to change regarding disability and there perhaps a bit of what you said in your last post needs to be injected. Believing in Allah and fate can give you hope in that way.

Very nice and well put :)
Some Pakistanis are retard themselves mocking disable people and not helping them.
When I was living in Pakistan, I never personally know any handicap or 'abnormal' (that's the term they used/still use) back home, persons but I remember hearing about them. My Daadi Jan told me that in her family there was a mentally retarded ( for the lack of a better word) young girl and as soon as she hit puberty the parents had her undergo hysterectomy ( removal of uterus). This was done so that no pregagnacy results if she was unfortunately raped by any male family member/servant .
My mother also once motioned that when she was a little girl, in her neighborhood there was a boy who was born blind. His parents figured that since he can't read, go to school, let him be a Hafiz-Quran. Unfortunately the local Molwee Sahib was a terror. My mother recalls that she and the rest of the children would hear the blind boys screams when Molwi hit him with sticks every afternnon. Mom says the poor boy was so utterly terrified and fearful that soon after he started taking lesson, one day he died in his sleep-his heart just stopped. Now I am not the one to connect dots between one thing and the another, I am just retelling the story as was recalled and told by my mother.
Oh! I just remembered, one of my class fellow had a mentally retarded child ( thay were a very rich family and there was lot of inbreeding with cousins marrying other cousins) Her retarded son was in 24-7 care of a servant, I believe she was ashamed by him and whenever we saw her in gatherings and parties she would bring only her 'normal' children with her.
