In 58 years, Pakistan has won only four series and a one-off Test at home venues against Australia. The last time Pakistan won a home series against Australia was in 1994. Having taken the lead with a comprehensive win in the ongoing series, played in Pakistan’s makeshift home, Misbah-ul-Haq is very keen to add to that list.
“It’s very important to win as it has been a long time since we won,” Misbah said in Abu Dhabi. “We have a big chance, as a team, to win back our confidence, and especially with the way the boys have performed recently, they are very confident. So I think we have a chance and if we remain focused we can do it.”
The second and final Test of the series begins in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, and also provides Misbah with the chance to become Pakistan’s most successful Test captain - he has 13 wins from 30 games, while Imran Khan and Javed Miandad have 14 victories apiece, but from 48 and 34 matches respectively. He said he will not be playing for the record, though. “I am not aware about the records, the only intention at the moment is to play good cricket and maintain our performance level and get it improved. There is always a complaint that Pakistan doesn’t perform with consistency, so our entire focus is to make ourselves consistent.”
In the first Test, in Dubai, Pakistan had dominated Australia all through, having arguably held the edge in all but one session across five days to win by 221 runs. However, Misbah was wary of the possible backlash from Australia. “Every time we play our mindset is basically is to win, but it’s a Test cricket and sometimes there is a possibility to carve out another way, which is a draw. But when two teams are good, you always have to go with a positive mind set so we will try to win this one,” he said. "Australia aren’t a minor team, they are the best team in world.
"What we are aiming is to do is repeat the good things we had done in the previous game in Dubai, and perform in the same way. I think if we fill the basic roles well, then good results will come. The most important will be to do the basics of Tests in the best manner. Let’s hope for the best.
“Important part is the hunger to perform, which is there. As the way we lost the two-match series earlier [against Sri Lanka in August] the boys were hurt, but they were determined and focused. All had the spirit to perform well, hence it came our way in the end. All the individual efforts played a combined role, so we will strive to do the same things again.”
In the five Tests played in Abu Dhabi, Pakistan have never been beaten - they’ve won twice, and drawn three times. The Abu Dhabi pitch, according to Misbah, is different from the Dubai track where the spinners had dominated. “This pitch looks a bit different, and normally it is different from Dubai because it is harder and sometimes has little bit more pace and bounce. But given the strength of our team, it looks good as we have a good record at the pitch, as we haven’t lost here.”
Pakistan had played in Dubai with a new-look bowling unit, without the suspended Saeed Ajmal, and Misbah said he was comfortable with the current attack. “I think credit must be given to the bowlers that they did not make us feel Ajmal’s absence. The way they contributed it was wonderful,” he said. "Ajmal is a great bowler and we had relied on him for so long, and on Abdur Rehman, but these bowlers being new played their roles.
“You feel Ajmal’s absence when you play here [in the UAE] and the Australians had not played him much and he could have played a major role. But I think these bowlers filled in for Ajmal in a good way. It’s great that they fulfilled their roles and played a key role in the win.”

Pakistan look to end 20-year drought

Match facts

Start time 10.00 local, 06.00 GMT

Big Picture
In November 1994, Pakistan batted out day five of the third Test in Lahore to complete a 1-0 series victory over Australia. They did so despite surrendering first-innings leads in all three Tests, and despite the dual withdrawals of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis from the team for the deciding match. Their deliverer was the captain Saleem Malik, who mastered the previously rampant Shane Warne over the course of 557 series runs at 92.83. It appeared to have been a meeting between two teams set to dominate the next decade or more. But this only turned out to be true for Australia - Mark Taylor’s team would beat the West Indies the following year and establish a thirteen-year global supremacy. Their opponents would do something like the opposite.Twenty years and nine series later, Pakistan have weathered more storms than it is possible to mention here. Australia have commonly trampled all over them in the first Test of a series and then carried on to win. Not once in the intervening years have the sub-continental team had something to hang onto as the encounter developed - until now.

The victory in Dubai was not simply a rousing result, for it was among the most complete Test match performances seen anywhere in recent times. After winning a key toss, Misbah-ul-Haq’s team soaked up the pressure applied by Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle before attacking Nathan Lyon and milking the more limited offerings of Steve O’Keefe. Rahat Ali, Imran Khan, Zulfiqur Babar and Yasir Shah then proceeded to tie Australia’s batsmen in familiar knots. Those knots had been glimpsed during the tour match, and it will take a major change of mindset to prevent them from returning in Abu Dhabi.

Nonetheless, the biggest question this week will be how much Pakistan truly believe they can beat Australia, and how much Michael Clarke’s team are prepared to accept the prospect of being defeated by an opponent they have become so accustomed to swatting aside, even after the baggy green XI was no longer a gathering of giants. Twenty years is a long time, but so too are five days.

In the spotlight
As happens to many captains, consistent runs are growing increasingly difficult for Michael Clarke to attain. When he rebuked critics of his tour match form for noting that he made a brave century in Cape Town during Australia’s previous Test match, they might have responded that he went five matches without reaching 50 before that. Clarke’s usually nimble feet against spin were nowhere to be seen in Dubai, and he has taken up the Rahul Dravid gambit of batting without pads against Lyon and O’Keefe to try to get them moving in Abu Dhabi.

There is not much Shane Warne and Steve Waugh agree on, but they have been rare unison when discussing the quality of Pakistan’s wrist spin debutant Yasir Shah. Spin, accuracy, subtle variation were all evident in his seven-wicket display, and on an Abu Dhabi surface that may not turn as much as Dubai, the extra revolutions imparted by Yasir’s wrist may give him a useful edge over the finger twirlers. Australia, though, will be wiser this time, leaving Pakistan to discover how their new find can cope with greater scrutiny and expectation this time around.

Teams news
**Mohammad Hafeez will be under pressure from Taufeeq Umar for his spot in Pakistan’s XI after being one of few underwhelming performers in Dubai.
**
Pakistan (possible): 1. Ahmed Shehzad, 2. Mohammad Hafeez, 3. Azhar Ali, 4. Younis Khan, 5. Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6. Asad Shafiq, 7. Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 8. Zulfiqar Babar, 9. Imran Khan, 10. Yasir Shah, 11. Rahat Ali

Australia’s only likely adjustment would be to include Ben Hilfenhaus or Mitchell Starc at the expense of Steve O’Keefe, but an unchanged XI appears the favoured scenario.

Australia (probable): 1 Chris Rogers, 2 David Warner, 3 Alex Doolan, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Steve Smith, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Peter Siddle, 10 Steve O’Keefe, 11 Nathan Lyon

Pitch and conditions
Abu Dhabi’s pitch appears dry as expected, and though it may not spin quite so much as Dubai’s, variable bounce may come into play as the match wears on.

Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan’s last series win over Australia took place in 1994, when a one-wicket victory in Karachi was followed by draws in Rawalpindi and Lahore
  • Sarfraz Ahmed - who already has the most runs as wicketkeeper in 2014 - needs 84 runs to go past Kamran Akmal as the Pakistan wicketkeeper with most Test runs in a calendar year. He has hit 523 runs this year at an average of 65.37
  • For a Pakistan victory by a margin of more than one match, one must go back as far as a 3-0 sweep of Kim Hughes’ tourists in 1982
  • Quotes
“If you’re trying to sell a newspaper, it’s an absolute disaster and you’ll mention India. If you’re part of the Australian cricket team then you’ll look at the last 12 months and how well we’ve played and accept that we’ve lost a game.”

Michael Clarke isn’t losing too much sleep over the Dubai defeat

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

I'll be really upset (not that it matters) if they go for a draw right from the begining. It'd be silly. Also I heard they are announcing to keep the exact same bowling lineup which is ridiculous. I really dont think both Rahat Ali or Imran are that of our frontline bowlers. We have better ones sitting on bench.

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

Bring in Taufeeq in place of Hafeez perhaps? Hafeez's weakness against fast bowlers' outside the off stump is well known by now. All fast bowlers call Styne and get tips on Hafeez. He should go back to drawing board and try to fix as much as he can.

Not that others are perfect in that area but Hafeez in front of Styne and Jhonson looks like a sitting duck.

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

Am assuming you are gonna skip watching and make do with the highlights?

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

thats the plan as of right now but u never know...

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

We will Inshallah win the test provided someone doesnt watch the the match. The painful memories of the the first test when two wickets fell quickly while this someone was watching. Can he spare us the agony. :D

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

Thank you! Now don't matter which bowlers play.. :)

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

Would have loved had this been a longer series.

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

I hope Misbah doesn't go on the defense right from the start, like he usually does. Aussies will come hard at them. They got a couple of players who need to prove a point and they will come out swinging.

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

At it worst…a draw should be enough to clinch the series… :jhanda:

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

it really depends if the team performs and does not fall due to complacency

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

There is a good chance that Pakistan will win this one match. The only thing we need are 2 or 3 good innings during the course of the match.

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

here is a golden chance for Pakistan to win the series against Australi after 20[SUP]+[/SUP] years. GO PAK, GO!

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

Agree, Hafeez is a good ODI all rounder but in tests we need a perfect opener . May be they are considering him as 5th bowler. Lets hope he will show some good performance.

Here is his horrible performance in tests during 2013.

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

yes, Imran and Rahat are not wickets taking bowlers, especially Rahat Ali, who is playing his 8th test but seen no sting in his bowling.

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

I don't know why but World Cup 1999 Final memories coming in my mind :(.

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

:jhanda: Hafeez will be under great pressure indeed.

Aussies made nice changes in their team.

Toss time. Michael Clarke calls tails, it’s heads, and Misbah-ul-Haq says Pakistan will bat first. He thinks there might be a bit of low bounce later on. Pakistan are unchanged.
Two changes for Australia. **Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc **come in for Alex Doolan and Steve O’Keefe. A third seamer and an allrounder who bowls offspin. Interesting.

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

Hafeez

1.3
Starc to Mohammad Hafeez, 3 runs, a little closer to off stump this time and Hafeez comes forward and steers it past the left hand of the diving point fielder

Re: Pak V Aus - 2nd Test

Today Misbah is playing his 50th Test Match :jhanda:
