Police in Pakistan have arrested five men, including an alleged suicide bomber, on charges of planning to attack Shia processions in Karachi.
The men were arrested in raids on Friday night, the day before the religious festival of Ashura.

Hundreds of thousands of people participate in Ashura processions throughout Pakistan.

Ashura, marking the assassination of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, is commemorated across the Muslim world.

In Pakistan, the ancient commemoration can often turn into modern tragedy as Sunni extremists use the public event to carry out terror attacks.

“The suspects have acknowledged, after initial interrogations, that they planned to attack processions on the 9th and 10th of Muharram [19 and 20 January] with grenades and suicide attack,” Azher Farooqi, police chief of Sindh province, said.

“They also planned to attack army installations in the city, and intended to use cyanide to poison the sabeels.”

Sabeels are refreshment stands, with juices and water, available to mourners in the Ashura processions.

This is the first time that police in Pakistan have recovered cyanide suspected to be meant for terror use.

As well as cyanide, the police also recovered 6kg of explosive materials, several grenades and small arms.

Mr Farooqi said that the arrested men were trained at a militant camp near the town of Mir Ali in North Waziristan.

According to him, the arrested leader of the alleged terror cell, Mohammad Ejaz, was an expert in bomb-making and in the construction of explosive jackets for suicide bombers.

The Sindh police chief said Mr Ejaz had previously fought in Afghanistan and was still in touch with the militia of Maulana Jalaluddin Haqqani’, one of the main Taleban commanders fighting Nato forces in Afghanistan.

Mr Haqqani is said to operate out of Waziristan.

In a separate development, Mr Farooqi announced, three men had also been arrested in the nearby city of Hyderabad on similar suspicions.

However, he said the men were as yet only being questioned and had not been charged.

Re: Pak Police foil terrorist attack on Ashura procession.

And what would blowing up a bunch of shias have done for the muslim people around the world???? This is disgusting. This goes to show how intolerant these a-wipes are, and how far they're willing to go. I don't understand what they're trying to accomplish????

Waziristan needs to be completely surrounded and totally choked off. Nothing should be allowed to go in or come out of the area, and extremists NEED to be tracked down from house to house and shot.

“We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide”

A new low. Am I the only one that sees our extremist “Sunni” groups as a major major problem in our communities? This is amazing. I used to sometimes go to the processions with some Shia friends, and drank from the Sabeels in Karachi. How is killing Shias on their processions do anything. I encourage you all to be aware of these events, as they seemed to be happening to our Shia friends all over Pakistan.

  • as a side note, people who bust out with the apologetic generic soliloquy of “may Allah guide them on the right path” are providing a slap on the wrist and in turn a cheer for these terrorists, by simply being apathetic to the hardship of the victims.

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

This is very sad indeed. May Allah (SWT) guide us all, and unite the muslims as an Ummah, put tolerance and peace in all our hearts, and may Allah (SWT) give us the taufeeq to love each other and strengthen our Muslim Brotherhood, and follow the way of Beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and live the way Quran guides us to live.

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

^^ how can these people be united, when they hate Shia more than they hate Jews.

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

^^^that's the sorrow, that everything they are doing is only further damaging the unity. :(

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

^^ lol, what unity?

Muslims were only united, when Prophet Muhammed was alive

After he died, we split apart...

Muslims were never united.

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

then i guess we have to go back to that time of unity.

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

^^ that will never happen, as there is no central figure like Prophet Muhammed any more

the only way for muslims to be united, is to be like Europe

Have a major war like World war II, Iron out the differences and then unite like the EU

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

Anything's possible, as long as people open up their minds, hearts and let go of petty differences that have caused rifts in between people, who at one time were under the same flag, one book, no arguments.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) warned of such times when Muslims would be great in numbers, but they will be constantly humiliated from all sides, because they lack unity/brotherhood. Once we can gather ourselves and resolve our differences, then we can move forward.

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

funny how these 'muslims' want to kill the true momeens of islam; its pure and total ignorance. Allah (swt) has said that He guides who He wills and those of us who have held onto the rope of the Prophet's progeny are indeed the rightly guided ones, alhumdullilah.

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

Its the deeds and following Quran that makes momineen, momineen. Whosoever, does not follow Islam properly, is no momin

Re: “We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide”

all is well that ends well. :chai:

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

Islam can only be followed properly when the progeny of the Prophet interprets the essentials for the ummah; certain 'companions' were only interested in political power and thwarted Mawla Ali's (a.s.) rite and for that may Allah have mercy on them.

I feel sorry for this/these other sects; infact pity them. May Allah guide them.

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

Prophet (pbuh) said I am knowledge, Ali is the gate.

how much more simple can it be?

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

All we have to follow is Quran and Hadith. Definately Quran before anything.

That is the ultimate guide to life in my view anyways, i don't know about others. :)
Islam will prevail inshaAllah, with us or without us. We should seek unity as muslims, follow Quran because it's a sure thing. Everything else is interpretable and changeable (Allah forgive me if i say anything wrong).

Re: “We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide”

not simple enough. explain further. :chai:

Re: “We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide”

To get to knowledge one needs a medium. That medium willl always be the progeny of the prophet. simple

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

Lets not convertt this into shia vs sunni. There are many shias who would call Imam Ali their Imam but barely follow Islam and teachings of Prophpet pbuh and Imam Ali. Infact are involved in all sorts of activities that are condemned by Prophet pbuh and all the Imams.

Our Prophet pbuh and Imams have never believed in spreading hatred and they have always stressed that a true momineen are those who have good deeds.

It is time that we stop spreading hatred, create tolerance among ourselves, and educate ourselves so we can all live with peace and harmony.

Re: "We wanted to kill shias with Cyanide"

But Quran says, Allah is closer to you (each of us) than our jugular vein. If we do good deeds, worship Allah as the only one that has power overall, and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the last prophet, then we will be fine, inshaAllah.

So...what medium?
