PAK-NZ ODI Series 2004

I saw the whole match...
our fielding cost us the match,,
The kiwis were excellent in the field, and we were pathetic...
There were quite a few misfields on the boundary.... at least 4 or 5 regulation stops were missed and boundaries were given away...
sara mood kharab kar diya,, we were quite comfortable at one stage.

Well played NZ. Pak were around 30 runs short and loss of early wickets cost them the match plus absence of Shoaib. If Shoaib was playing the total would have been defendable. Never mind, there are 4 more matches to come.

Misfielding, dropped catches, missing easy run-out chance, and on top of that, 38 extras. What Pakistan hasn’t done lately, did in the 1st ODI. :mad2:

Scott Styris could have been out on 35 when Imran Farhat dropped the catch. Razzaq had a perfect chance of run out, he missed it and got hammered. :frowning:

Azhar Mahmood’s comeback as an all-rounder is a good sign but still Pakistan doesn’t have 6th bowler in the squad. Moin Khan’s blistering knock of 72 runs took Pakistan out of trouble. Youhana failed again. Shoaib Malik was yet another failed story with the bat. Saleem Elahi looked like to pick the bat for the first time in his life. He should be dropped and Younis Khan should be in.

Mahmood, Malik did put alot of pressue on Kiwis. Razzaq was a part too but after 39 overs, oh boy, smacking started by Styris that ultimately cost us the match! Sami and Shabbir were unable to put Styris on backfoot. That was some nice hitting I must say!

I think Pakistan played well (without Shoaib Akhtar) and their fielding were pathethic... Shabbir and Razzqi were lil expensive but I think they can always comeback in the next match. Shoaib will make the difference inshAllah in the second game. Shoaib Malek bowled really well and also picking up 2 wickets.

This appeared in today’s Dawn:

Cricket: counting on individuals

Yousuf Youhana drove through the extra-cover boundary and Pakistan coasted through the second Test match in Wellington a few days back, much to the relief of Inzamam who must be learning the ropes of captaincy, with every passing game.

While speedster Shoaib Akhtar fired all his cylinders, one wonders how the skipper would have manoeuvred hadrain entirely washed out the final day’s play.

Shoaib Akhtar is, no doubt, a match winner but he cannot win every game for Pakistan single-handedly. And the heavy reliance on him has to be done away with if our team wants to make any real progress.

A Pakistani bowling attack without Akhtar is as good as England’s - and that too lacks penetration as was evident in the first innings in Hamilton. He really forms the spinal cord of our otherwise pedestrian bowling lineup. Other bowlers like Mohammad Sami and Umar Gul too should step ahead and keep getting breakthroughs, instead of giving extra runs.

In this Test series, our batsmen also failed to impress, with only Youhana and Inzamam excelling. Get these men out cheaply and the game is in your pocket (Moin, of course, was a dark horse while scoring his highest knock in Test cricket).

This dependence of ours on individual brilliance instead of collective output might cost us dearly in future. With the Indian tour round the corner, if these shortcomings are not rectified, the writing will be very much on the wall regarding the outcome of that series.

It’s time our cricketers learnt to function as a unit, otherwise they can win on a particular day, but will indeed be remembered as losers in the annals of cricket.

I couldn’t agree more with Talha. Too much reliance on Shoaib is going to cost us, if it hasn’t already today. I say we drop Shoaib for a few matches to see what the "TEAM’ really is capable of.

Says it all.

Everyone said it already. Pakistan's misfielding, bad batting, some bad decisions in umpiring, very good fielding by NZ cost us the match.

NZ fielding was great, they saved probably 25-30 runs and that is the difference in the game, also i think Inzi used his bowlers well! Fielding was the difference in the game, after WC Pak fielded really well now the discipline as i had mentioned before is gone!

It is always a TEAMWORK but dropping in form players is not a good test. What will we have proved if Shoaib is dropped and the team loses? or wins?

Good management and leadership, particularly from captain and coach is best way to develop TEAMWORK I think.

Ofcourse if anyone thinks they are bigger than the team then dropping in a match will do good

Can anyone tell me what was in Inzimam’s mind opting fielding around the boundary? That guy can’t balance his body while running, and he wanted to save boundaries himself?

Styris scored century (101 in 108 balls!) and took 3 wickets giving only 34 runs in 10 overs! That is called ALLROUND performance! Not to forget taking one catch also (Youhana). In other words Styris took about 50% wickets that fell, scored about 50% the runs and took 50% of the catches.

Styris is a very good all rounder.

Saleem Elahi should definetly be dropped and Younis should come in. Razzaq should also be dropped. His batting or his bowling is not good enough to keep him in the team. Malik and Mahmood enough all rounders in one team, we don’t need another all-rounder.

Speaking of Saleem Elahi, was he the guy who dropped the ball at the boundary to give NZ a free 4?
If he was he should be buried in Pakistani domestic cricket and never see international cricket again. Let him play out teh rest of his years for Fauji Fertalizer. Can you imagine somebody making a crucial mistake like that at such an important stage of the game.
The problem in this match, was we had no middle order. The openers were ok, the tail was awsome. Inzi and Yoyo were irresponsible and senior batsmen like that have to produce at crucial moments. I have never been a Yunis Khan fan, but I would select him over Saleem Elahi.
Azhar Mahmood impressed with batting and bowling, nice to see him back. I dont think I need to say anyhting about Moin Khan,,,,,,,,,

Salem Elahi should be dropped, Razzaq should be dropped!
A typical loser desi mentality.

^ i agree, i dont think razzaq should be dropped he had a number of match winning performances against the kiwis in pakistan... and after one bad match you cant just go out and drop him from the squad... if mahmood fails, then what? drop mahmood and bring back razzaq? I think you have to stick with these guys and let them gel as a unit... especially the younger players... the only guy that should be dropped is salim elahi and thats only because he was too lazy in the field when he gave away that free 4 and the commentators were right when they said miandad should put him on the bus back home, thats if it was elahi who misfielded i'm not entirely sure who it was... the middle order struggled but I think younis khan can help out there and he has lots to prove after a short period in the wilderness... and we have other options at opener as well, we can give taufeeq another shot in one dayers if farhat struggles... but the 6th bowler option will become an issure.. khair, thats for inzi and miandad to sort out...

The Game Responds:

*Saleem Elahi has Aamir Sohail's "parchi"; he doesn't even deserve to play international cricket(and unlike you sheep, I've been saying that ever since I saw him bat). People, That Is All.*

He wasn’t alone in “misfielding” which resulted in 4, Razzaq couldn’t block the ball and dragged it to boundary with himself and same for Inzimam. Imagine Inzimam running to save a boundary  I don’t know what he was thinking.

We have 3 alll-rounders and only 2 specialist bowlers. Sami :mad2: I know he will come back strongly in 2nd game inshallah, but why can’t he play all the games as “2nd game”, why there has to be a 1st game where he will slack and in next he will comeback strongly?

Jeeta Hua Match Haar Gaye :( :( :(
