They would have done this LONG ago...to many more high profile targets.
They're not stupid. In any case, all they would have to do is proclaim it a plot to demonize the religious parties, and condemn it. So if there is any kind of political party involvement...subterfuge will hide the truth.
Having said that, I think this was most likely the work of a single deranged guy...now the question is...where the hell was her security detail?!? I mean, I would have thought given the political climate there...they would have screened everyone!

^ I agree, a deranged man, while he may have been somewhat influenced by what people are calling mollahs, but we cant blame them for his actions, as its very clear this was one 'disturbed' individual.

2007 is the election year. Special arrangements should be made to ensure the safety of important political figures in public rallies, irrespective of the parties they belong to.
Pakistan needs its version of anti-hate laws. Incitement to hatred or violence should be a crime. Anyone inciting hatred or violence, regardless of whether his motives are 'religious' or secular, should be put behind bars. This may not keep another deranged person from pulling the trigger, but it will stop the indoctrination of gullible illiterate people by the unscrupulous forces with vested interests.
A big question that needs to be answered is why couldn't he be convicted and punished if he had been accused of murders or any other crimes in the past?

According to Pak media/DPO, there were six charges of murder and attempted murder against him. Indian media source, as usual, is factually incorrect.
I'm assuming that the charges filed against him in the past had at least some truth in them. It's disturbing to read that the concerned authorities were unable to provide enough evidence to prove these charges.

The Guy was released on previous cases by the appeal court due to not having enough evidence against him. Its not the loop hole in justice system, its the loop hole in our Police system that is still run by the Police Act 1871. Are we capable to at least make law for ourselves? NO, we are not. We are still using CrPC (Criminal Procedure Code) & PPC (Pakistan Penal Code) enacted by British Legalists in 1870s. Police Act was created to crush the local people & keep hold of British Policing in British India, its definately not for normal humans of present age & loads of loop holes due to advancement in Technology & information.
Our politicians already consider themselves as GODs, and one who behaved a little human like was killed by this maniac. He shouldn't be hanged or killed. He should be blinded (eyes taken out), have his both hands & feet chopped & kicked out on the street to live his life in Gujjranwala city pavement. Killing means, he is being freed of all troubles, he should be punished not freed from his troubles.

That is a very logical and informative explanation you have there!
And it makes perfect sense. We need to reform the antiquated laws and politicians which are ruining our poor nation.
However, from a police perspective, the entire department needs to be fortified with better pay, better facilites and then accountabiltiy for their actions.
These are all basic tenets of a civilized and organized society and should be enforced at the local as well as Govt. level.
