‘Pakistan may let Taliban use its nuclear weapons against India’
Pakistan may let surrogate Taliban use its nuclear weapons to do its “dirty work” against India in the event of escalation of tension between the two South Asian neighbours over Kashmir, a top US non-proliferation expert has suggested.
Bob Graham, head of US Commission on the Prevention of WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) proliferation and terrorism painted such a scenario at a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on nuclear terrorism on Thursday.
“If something broke out in Kashmir that reignited the vitriol between India and Pakistan, that could be an incident that could cause someone to make the decision,” he warned
“(The Pakistanis may say) We don’t want to use these weapons, but we’re going to let our surrogate Taliban have access to these weapons and they’ll do our dirty work,” he said.
“I think one of our recommendations was to work with India and Pakistan to develop some fail-safe procedures,” Graham said responding to questions from lawmakers concerned about the safety and security of nuclear weapons in Pakistan.
Although during the Cold War, the US and the Soviet Union were strong adversaries and had the capability of destroying each other, “we understood that we didn’t want to allow a mis-step or an accidental event to become the ignition for such a war”, Graham said.
Pakistani military establishment is capable of nuking India in case of any unforeseen circumstances in Kashmir or any where else
Why would they need Taliban to do such a job?
This is totally unbelievable that they need help of Taliban to do such thing
why are you guys shooting the messenger (Hindustan Times)? this was said by the US Commission on WMD Prevention - the newspaper is merely reporting it.

cricketplaya, HinJew Times? really?
Jews from India call themselves HinJews, at least the ones I know in my city. :D tis the truth!

Simple! They are Pakistanis and Indian media is reporting .
why exactly would we need taliban to nuke india. for years we have been testing missiles that can carry nuclear payloads. presumably these would be a more logical choice compared to the completely untested and relatively slow mechanism of having a guy crossing the border with a nuclear bomb at a time when you would be more likely to have security checks.
the reason the newspaper is being criticised is that short of indian newspapers you would not find this elderly retired senators boneheaded statement as headline news material. there is a total one blog that I have been able to find that even mentions the sentence explicitly, such is the contrast between how mature press reports these things versus how the indian hysterics machine does.
isn’t that the job of a newspaper? or do you want a newspaper to make a judgement call that the report if a US Commission on WMD is negligible and instead they should print one more column about some actress’s dog losing weight?
the job of the newspaper is not to scour the world looking for sentences that can be sensationalized as a cute little headline. the committee in question is american. the retired septugenarian senator in question is american. the foreign policy recommendations are for america. if this really is headline news why isnt it headline news in the country where this is occurring?

A report is made by an officially chartered committee in the all powerful US government about a threat to India.
And you are calling it sensationalizing for a newspaper to have reported it!
yes a report by an officially chartered committee in the all powerful US government about a threat to India, and you cant bring yourself to answer why nobody but indian newspapers have headlines screaming about it.
the indian approach to journalism is like someone eavesdropping on a conversation, waiting for a juicy snippet and then going off running shouting their heads off.
nonsense. notice that you have not even attempted to answer the principle criticism for why, if this is international standard journalism, can you not find headlines of a similar sort, or even articles of a similar sort, in the country to which this committee belongs, to which this retired senator was commenting.

Because it talks about India getting bombed by a nuke??Isn't that reason enough for an Indian newspaper to show interest?
