Pak girl raped for 'acquiring education'

ISLAMABAD: After Mukhtaran Mai, a case of Mumtaz Mai has come to light in rural Pakistan, where women become victims of tribal warfare, family feuds or quite simply, male violence.

The News International on Saturday reported the case of one Mumtaz Mai and her daughter, Ghazala Shaheen Bathi, who were abducted, held in captivity and gang-raped for 12 days because daughter Ghazala dared to become educated.

Mukhtaran Mai, the tribal woman gang-raped in June 2002, was freed after the Pakistan Supreme Court intervened in her favour. The case raised protests and concern among civil societies across the world last year.

While Mukhtaran Mai was a victim of a family feud and an act in retaliation to the rape of a girl her brother Shakur was alleged to have committed, the mother-daughter duo earned the wrath of the Mirali tribesmen when it became known that Ghazala had passed her Master’s in Education from Bahauddin Zahariya University on Aug 25.

The girl’s father Mohammed Hussain, a retired army man belonging to village Chak Sher Khan near Kabirwala in Multan, was also beaten up.

As in Mukhtaran Mai’s case, influential people are said to be involved in this case too. The newspaper report repeatedly hinted at the involvement of “a minister of state”, but did not name him.

When informed by the villagers, the local police acted after 12 days, only to help the accused.

While three men managed to escape, the local villagers prevented the car carrying the two women from driving away.

It is said that among the three men overpowered the villagers included two bodyguards of the minister.

Kabirwala’s police chief Daud Hussain has been quoted as denying the incident. The police reportedly clarified that the two women had run away from their home “on their own”.

However, the newspaper said authorities in the local hospital confirmed that the two women had been raped.

i dont think that characterizing all Pakistanis as bad,

is something that will be a way to curtail and eradicate this.

it is ignorance.

and that has to be dealt with, by taking the culprits out, educating the rest of the elements and agents or agencies in the society, who commit these crimes, these atrocities & forget that at least by name they are classified as Muslims from Pakistan.

may the victims find strength to keep on studying and one day shame can embarrass the wrong doer, the savage, weak of mind and character, and ignorant men.

If even the state and our esteemed parliament of monkeys is not willing to help women with a just and fair (Hudood) law, how can you expect some policeman or chaudry in the rural backwaters of Punjab to show respect for women?

It all starts from the top and trickles down to the rest of society. If Musharraf, a military dictator, can't face the mullahs and feudals, so what chance does anyone else has?

Whats worse .....? What happened to that poor girl ...or...... How some will try and use her miserable plight and make a name for themselves as happened in Mukhtaran Mai case by advertising her for political and in case of NGOs for financial gain......?

Because there are sick Indians, sick Bengladeshis, sick Afghanistanis, sick Iranis, sick Chinese, sick Britishers, sick Americans .... so we have our own share of sick Pakistanis.... get it?

The act of rape irrespective of motives behind is really condemnable, and to cover it up by saying they ran away on their own just shows how strong and uncorrupted the LEAs are.

Why these kinds of acts happened only in military dictatorship? First case happened in the eighties during Zia’s regimes when a woman was forced to run naked in populated areas of Nawabpur?

Dictatorship isnt responsible for such cheap acts, but i dont know whats the real motive behind this ??? Will anybody explain, why a gal has been raped just because she was trying to educate herself.

That’s what I say therez no rules and regulations in Pakistan, they should be punished strictly and bring into custody for lifetime and should be beaten like hell same like Mumbia Police do with scoundrel and terrorists…

Most of such incidents are not really one faceted, even though there is resistance against education for poors (esp if you are under a landlord/fuedal etc.) but hard to see that she is getting raped now after her Masters. If education was the real factor then what about her Bachelors, High school, matriculation education?

I believe she was raped because she was a lower caste girl who got educated :( In the tribal justice system, rape is often used as a punishment.

You can try seeing it with your class tainted glasses or you can remove them and see it clearer, but I guess being unfamiliar with Pakistan's rural setting its difficult for you. BTW, there was not 'panchayat/jirga' this time, atleast I am unaware of (from the article).

Obviously, this article is not the only one published on this story. Aren’t the words below quite clear ?

A Pakistani woman and her daughter were allegedly abducted and gang-raped for 12 days because the daughter got university education against the wishes of some leaders of their Mirali tribe.
