Re: Paanch Pandos

I lived with Sayyids in kanpur for two years as a tenant, I was amazed how a grandfather used to call her grandson with word AAP, it was way too civilized according to Jat standard, in fact, the speaking etiquettes of Hindustanis are far better than Jat/Jatts, I am lcuky to live with this people I got civilized:D

he is too controversian, the story writers would clash on every point of his life and director would bang his head against wall:D, there were serials regarding Akbar, like Akbar-Birbal and Akbar the great:k:

Re: Paanch Pandos

Yes five brothers taken part in a competition and they married to Drupadi, after their mother said them to share what they won in the competition.

Whats your next question? Do you want to know that events mentioned in Mahabharta really happened and there was really a woman like Drupadi?

Re: Paanch Pandos

i'm not sure this is history, its more hindu epic/mythology developed on the historical accounts of settling of the indo-gangetic plains by aryan/central asian tribes. it marks a milestone in the evolution of "hinduism" from the nature-gods of the vedic pantheon (indra, maruts, rudra, mitra etc) to the more indian pantheon (vishnu, shiva and their forms). the social norms are those of 1400 BC, or roughly 3500 years ago, if not older.

Re: Paanch Pandos

queer what do you say about the tradition of polyandry that is pointed out through the character of Drupadi? Was Indian society matriarchal at the time of MahaBharata, because such concepts were acceptable in society until families were headed by women.

Re: Paanch Pandos

im not an expert on the mahabharata by any stretch, but i dont think paanchali/draupadi's polyandry was the norm even then, or has been imitated as a holy tradition. and if i remember right, draupadi was to spend being married to each husband for a period of 5(or was it 7 years) in the order of their birth.

many of the kings in mahabharata have multiple wives, but i can't recall any other instance of polyandry in the hindu epics. maybe someone else can elaborate on this.

Re: Paanch Pandos

Yes queer, I now remember that after knowing what the mother has asked their five sons to share (a wife), the mother was shown very much disturbed in Mahabhata serial, but that portrayal may be due to current status of polyandry in today's society.

I personally think that the marriage of five brothers with a single woman was given in Mahabharta to show that Pandava respected their mother a lot and had to fulfill what she said unintentionally.

Re: Paanch Pandos

Now imagine sunny leone in the same setting:D

she didn’t die till the end of story:), she beget five sons to each of the brother, who were killed while sleeping during war:), she was married to them one by one

He can read the book it is just a story there is hardly any Hindu philosophical things mentioned in it.

It is too real to be a myth:D, nevertheless VedVyas was genious as he conceived such a story where everyone had grey character, no black and white or angel or demon type stuff:), highly political, military-strategic war:D, where even god took the side:D

Hindu society was always patriarchial, but woman had freedom to choose husband, Amartya sen’s the argumentative Indian mentions arguements made by draupadi against Yudhshtir (eldest pandav)

After she is married to all five, they made a rule if one brother in inside with her, the other won’t enter, and in case rule is broken the culprit would go for exile of 12 years. So while Yudhishtir was in and Arjun was sitting outside, a brahmin came and asked for arjun helps to get back his cow from the dacoit, finally arjun enters the room with bowed head and gets back brahmin’s cow, even though Yudhstir convinces him that he is elder hence pardoned, Arjun goes to exile alone and while in exile he marries, NagKanya Uloopi and Chidrangada.

Draupadi was special case and was accordance with the boon of Bhagwan Shiv, she is even considered in Panch Kanyas, along with Kunti, Tara, Sita and Mandodari:)

Even in story the word “Asmanjas”, meaning struck in confusion, is mentioned. It wasn’t acceptable even then but once Mata Kunti said it they honored it:)

Re: Paanch Pandos

:hmmm: Punch kanyas.. Now I know the origin of Paanch beebiyon ki kahani in Muslim families.
