Thinking of western born Pakistanis as wild is offensive...does not matter which way you put it. Ive been told by Pakistanis on this very forum that overseas Pakistanis are "na idhar ke na udhar ke"... How is that not offensive? The term FOB exists to describe a fresh import but the term ABCD also exists to describe us. Its a two way street here PakWoman...its not fair to call us judgmental and consider everyone there as open minded and forgiving. They're not and judge us just as harshly as you may find people here.
Okay, slightly different topic but I noticed a lot of hate and disdain in UK towards the so called 'freshies' (I guess that includes myself) from the local Pakistani Brits. I'm not trying to paint everyone with the same brush here as I made some good british friends too, but from what I experienced at university and different workplaces, freshies were the butt of many jokes. These are usually the people who had it tough in Pakistan and worked their asses off to send money back home, but unfortunately they didn't have the perfect english or mannerisms of the locals. Strangely enough this hate only came from desis and never the whites or blacks.
@Reha Only if I say: because you do so and so, this means I am better than you. If I use this as a way of looking down at them then it should obviously be offensive.
And I hope you are not justifying by putting one type of behavior in front of the other.
Now to say something like ‘na idher kay na udar kay’ is outright rude… but if I ask you what clubs do you go to over there? Would that be offensive… if yes, then we need another thread to discuss this issue
Alright let me give you another example of the people in question. I know some people who have lived all their lives in a western country. But when they come here to visit occasionally to meet their relatives, grandparents etc. they are received so warmly. Everyone knows they are visiting after such a long time so we should give them a lot of hospitality. And all they do is… take out meen maikhs… this isn’t good, that isn’t good… you give them a gift, they’ll be like we don’t use stuff like this… yeah..
Yes it is offensive becasue right off the start you are assuming that they go to clubs.
now if u ask, “DO you go to clubs” rather than “what clubs do you go to”, thats different…ure being curious and depending on how its stated its not rude.
Look people are just people and you get all types in this world. Yeh there's probably overseas Pakistanis who look down on native Pakistanis and then there are native Pakistanis who look down on overseas Pakistanis. My only interaction with native Pakistanis has been sons/daughters of rich landlords from random villages in Punjab and Sindh who came to the West to study and then looked down on me for not drinking or actually working hard in life. I'm not going to assume everyone's like that in Pakistan but realistically if I wasn't so open then sure based on my limited experience I would make the deduction that native well off Pakistani's look down on overseas Pakistanis for a myriad of reasons. I have no experience to counteract that assumption. So to a large extent all assumptions or judgements are based on people's experiences and their own mindsets. Sometimes they're being narrow minded and sometimes they just don't know any better or haven't had the right exposure.
Some people just need any excuse to feel superior, it can be nationality, religion, the car you own, its just human nature to an extent. As long as a majority of people aren't like that all you can do with such minorities is ignore them.
