Voting for overseas Pakistani would be ensured, ECP tells SC – The Express Tribune

****ISLAMABAD: Just as the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan urged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the Supreme Court to ensure voting for overseas Pakistanis, the commission on Thursday told the apex court that voting for Pakistanis abroad would be ensured.
The ECP said that home work had been completed to include overseas Pakistanis in the forthcoming general elections. The court was further told that at a recent meeting of the ECP and other functionaries of the government, issues of providing right to franchise to overseas Pakistanis was discussed and had come to a conclusion that their participation would be ensured.
The three member bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice IftikharMuhammad Chaudhry, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, were told details of ECP’s meetings on the matter during the past week.
Director General ECP Sher Afgan told the court that the commission had come to the conclusion that inclusion of overseas Pakistanis in the coming election was possible and as part of the first step Pakistanis residing in ten countries would be included.
“About 4.5 million registered voters are residing in other countries, out of which 3.5 million are in the Middle East and 2.9 million out of this figure are currently living only in two countries of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.”
The ECPfurther stated that the NADRA had made E-voting software for the expatriates and would be utilised during the coming elections. Upon this, Justice Gulzar questioned that when an overseas Pakistani would caste his vote in another country, his vote could also be used in his own constituency which would be tantamount to using one vote twice. The DG ECP though brushed away the concerns, stating that there would be a very small chance of mistakes in the current E-voting system.
Attorney General for Pakistan Irfan Qadir told the court that the first step in this exercise would be a law, as including certain clauses in the legislation, the process would become easier.
Afgan added that per their plan in countries where the population of registered voters was over 100,000, two polling stations would be set up. Any country with less than that number would get one polling station. The court was told that visas for the staff appointed in foreign missions would take two to three weeks.
The bench adjourned further hearing for ten days while directing the ECP to submit further report on the legislation and other matters.

Re: Overseas Pakistani

^awesome news!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Overseas Pakistani

These guys aren't good enough to take care of even passport-related stuff, I don't know how they will handle voting.

Doosri baat, the ECP has suggested to set up two polling stations in every country for expat voting. This will be a disaster. Even in a small country like the UAE, if two stations are established one in Abu Dhabi and one in Dubai, people from areas like Al Ain or RAK would most probably not be able to make it to the polling stations.

Re: Overseas Pakistani

Its ok if not all of the registered voters can vote in this election. Even if 1/2 of the 4.5 million is able to vote, it could tilt the balance in favor of PTI since an overwhelming majority of overseas Pakistanis favors IK and PTI.

Polling booths to be set up across the UAE so Pakistanis can vote

ABU DHABI // Pakistanis in the UAE will be able to vote in next month’s general election in their homeland.

In addition to the Pakistani mission in Abu Dhabi and the consulate in Dubai, people will be able to vote at Pakistani schools in Dubai, Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. The country’s ambassador yesterday said that 45 polling booths would be set up at nine polling stations across the Emirates, with separate facilities for women.
The ambassador, Jamil Ahmed Khan, said overseas voting had been approved by the election commission of Pakistan, and citizens would find out how the voting would be conducted within the next week or so. The polling stations will have individuals’ details stored on computer databases so that voters can just turn up.
Mr Khan said Pakistan’s ministry of foreign affairs had already directed its missions and consulates worldwide to make necessary election arrangements in anticipation of the final go-ahead from the Election Commission.
He reminded the Pakistani community that only those who were on the Election Commission’s final list of voters could cast a vote, and urged them to turn out in large numbers at the polling stations.
There are about 1.2 million Pakistanis in the UAE. The election will take place on May 11 in Pakistan.

Re: Overseas Pakistani

in one community dinner when G R Malik was visiting I asked him about this. He said it may allowed in future but right now Pakistan no investment infrastructure for online overseas security for voting abroad. some of our people offered to put the investment upto a big amount but he was not comitting. Ofcourse he is diplomat and cannot openly do anything

Re: Overseas Pakistani

Its a risky business. Its not easy to keep online voting flawless and secure, with the prevailing environment of corruption in our country.
Being from software development industry myself, i know there is a lot to be done before they could claim that the system is secure and data cannot be altered to get "desired" results. Every single department is riddled by this cancer of corruption.

Re: Overseas Pakistani

Is this true news?

Re: Overseas Pakistani

Abhi tak to true hi hey...but the ECP changes its position very frenquenly. So stay tuned for updates... :)

Re: Overseas Pakistani

Re: Overseas Pakistani

Several countries accept Pakistan’s request for overseas voting

****ISLAMABAD: **Several countries including Saudi Arabia, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States have accepted Pakistan’s request to allow its overseas citizens to cast votes in the upcoming general elections, said a foreign ministry official on Friday.
**
“We have received concurrence from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Australia, Canada, the UK and the US,” said Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Aaziz Ahmed Chaudhry at his weekly briefing.

He said that the government was now only awaiting the concurrence of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to allow overseas Pakistanis there to take part in the May 11 parliamentary polls.

There are about five million eligible Pakistani voters currently living in different parts of the world. However, a majority of them are residing in Saudi Arabia, UAE, the UK, the US and Canada.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has been pushing the Election Commission of Pakistan to make arrangements for the expatriates to cast their ballots in the polls.

Apart from legislation, one of the hurdles was seeking permission from the host countries to allow overseas Pakistanis to take part in the polling.
The spokesperson said that the foreign ministry would extend all possible facilitation for the conduct of polling for overseas Pakistan as soon as a decision is taken by the government in this regard.

“As for countries where polling could be held, the election commission has identified nine countries for polling,” he added.
