Overnight trip tips

Any experienced trip planners around here?

I’m planning a family reunion trip in near future and have chosen Shenandoah Valley for our trip. We’re going to stay for one night. There are around 15 people including adults and kids. I’m planning on renting one of those cabins/cottages for the added country-side touch but depending on availability we may have to settle on some inns or hotels etc.

We’ll mostly do sightseeing during the day, taking breaks for lunch etc and I’m thinking taking food with us for the first day for picnic.

I’m compiling a list of things that I think we’ll need. Please advise better alternatives or any other input/idea. Following are in no particular order:

  1. Cooler - with ice and put some marinated meats in Tupperware in it. I’m not too sure about the size of it.
  2. Picnic mat
  3. Picnic basket
  4. Personal toiletries etc for each individual
  5. Bug spray/Sunscreen etc.
  6. Disposables - cups, plates, spoons etc.
  7. Garbage bags
  8. Sweatshirts/pullovers for the evening.
  9. Coal for BBQ
  10. Bread
  11. Fruit
As far as what to see, I’m planning the Valley national park and skyline parkway the first day and then Luray Caverns the next day after checking out. Has anyone been to Shenandoah Valley? There is not whole a lot we can do there in given the one day trip (we’ll probably arrive after noon-ish and leave next day in the early evening) but if you know better spots there (lake/water/river would be nice actually if it can fit into the tour).

Thanks.

Re: Overnight trip tips

tsk tsk.
not THAT type of huntin'

Re: Overnight trip tips

For heaven sake, this is not the Tribal Belt.

You may get some critters at night, 'coons and bears if you put the trash outside. Just one night should not be a problem, but if you have 15 people trash can accumulate pretty quickly. Keep all food inside the house, not in your car. Bears can really screw up a car...

Take a copy of "Blair Witch" kids will freak!

Re: Overnight trip tips

Make sure everyone brings blankets or a sleeping bag!

edit: we went part of the blueridgeparkway but didn't go all the way up to Shenandoah
Lovely country!
Good thing is that you can get off the parkway at any time and go to a grocery store/gas station etc.

Re: Overnight trip tips

caffeine ( to re-boost yr energy level)
pain killers ( to use after hiking)

Re: Overnight trip tips

and also your bathroom trips ;-)
Better take Gatorade for re-boosting energy hsap.

Re: Overnight trip tips

Ok, now you guys are just being plain obscene. I find a lot of offensive sexual innuendos between energy re-boosts and pain killers. :hoonh:

Re: Overnight trip tips

  1. Spare roll of TP. (not kidding here)
  2. Viagra
  3. Marshmallows, chocolate bars and grahm crackers for smores for the kids.

Have the kids been on long car rides before? any car sickness?
