Over the counter birth control

A necessity. However there seems to be a huge problem with that both in the US and in Muslim countries. Would you all support the availability of birth control over the counter in say Pakistan or other countries. Age should not be a restricting factor. If a girl of 15 wants to protect herself she should have the right to do so.

Re: Over the counter birth control

It’s easily accessible in many places in karachi for girls. I can’t say about the age limit.

15 year old little girls needing birth control is messed up.:smack:

Re: Over the counter birth control

you need to know what type of pills they are, estrogen pills, progestron pills or combine. if u have faimly or personnel history of breast/cervical/uterus cancer or history of blood clots then estrogen pills are contraindicated and u should take pregestron only pills, if none of the above apply to u then combine pill is first choice.
if you are over 35 and smoker then dont take combine pill.

Over the counter birth control

Just so you know some girls use birth controls pills because of PMS pain.

Re: Over the counter birth control

yeh, they are also prescribed for acne

Re: Over the counter birth control

If a 15 year old girl wants to protect herself she should keep her legs closed.

Re: Over the counter birth control

but that applies for girls of any age......

Re: Over the counter birth control

I don’t see the problem in making safe birth control available to all women. Preach all you like, but there will always be young people who have pre-marital sex. It takes a just a few minutes of temptation :hoonh:.

Abstinence-only sex education has NOT been found effective in preventing unwanted pregnancies. From wikipedia:

Evidence has not supported the effective use of abstinence-only sex education.[SUP][/SUP] It has been found to be ineffective in decreasing HIV risk in the developed world,[SUP][/SUP] and increases the rates of unplanned pregnancy.

Re: Over the counter birth control

BC is available here - I think Planned Parenthood centers all over the country have them without a prescription

Re: Over the counter birth control

And there will always be pedophiles who will prey on children. Should we also have dispensers popping out prepubescent Justin Beiber look-alikes at gas stations? Or maybe pre-marital sex is accepted among Pakistanis now, in which case I did not receive the memo. This place is schizophrenic, just the other day a poor bloke was bombarded with ahadis and Islamic references left, right and center by the holier-than-thou ladies, and here they are, advocating birth control for 15 year olds. How unenlightened and ignorant of me, right?.

At any rate, over the counter availability shouldn’t even be a problem. The 15 year olds can always go up to their enlightened moms, and ask for some.

Re: Over the counter birth control

Wtf? Pedophilia is a psychiatric condition where someone 16 years or older is sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children (source: wikipedia). Pre-marital sex is not a "condition" or illness. I never suggested that we promote pre-marital sex. But pretending it doesn't happen is stupid.

Calm down. Advocating the availability of birth control is not the same as advocating premarital sex. The option to safe birth control? Botched back-alley abortions. Yes, I'd rather have a young girl get access to BC than die bleeding all alone.

Life isn't always so simple is it?

Re: Over the counter birth control

Did you read the actual post before replying to it or did you just post as soon as you saw the word "sex" jump out at you?

Why do people get so worked up over this topic?

Re: Over the counter birth control

Of course most would support easy and affordable access to contraceptives in the Western world any day and for all ages - we've already established that (as much as the GOP cries and whines about it in the US). But Pakistan, where we really need it, is a while away from the majority supporting this notion.

Many studies show a link between becoming sexually active before the age of 16 and low self-esteem, depression, lower income, higher drop-out rates, etc. I'm not a supporter of 14 year-olds doing it like it's cool but for these reasons alone it is absolutely critical that they have easy access to contraceptives.

Re: Over the counter birth control

If we're talking about pakistan, girls who really need that sort if stuff could just purchase it wearing a niqab.

Re: Over the counter birth control

All drugs are over the counter in PakistanPakistan

Re: Over the counter birth control

Well if 15 year old girls are mature enough to do "it" then I'm pretty sure they all understand the consequences too. The fact that they'd want to buy protection means they're pre-planning and it's not just one innocent moment of temptation that makes them cross the line.

But I have no issues with making the drug available to whoever. And like Hmmna said, a lot of pharmacists in Pakistan won't even care if you have a prescription or not. In an episode of "Sar-e-aam", they sent a kid to some pharmacies with a fake prescription for sleeping pills and all the pharmacists ended up giving the kid the sleeping pills not even caring about the possibility that the kid could end up killing himself.

Re: Over the counter birth control

Before you start making judgments about girls using birth control, you should know that it is used and prescribed for many reasons other than birth control.

1) To treat ovarian cysts
2) To treat symptoms of PCOS - a hormonal syndrome
3) To treat endometriosis
4) To treat acne
5) To treat very heavy menstrual periods
6) Some other medications will not be prescribed to a female patient before she is taking birth control, because pregnancy is contraindicated while taking that medication (a pregnancy would be fatal to the fetus). Even if a girl is not sexually active, the FDA requires her to take birth control, because unfortunately, men still rape women in our society!

Please educate yourself before you pass judgment on people. There are many 15 year old girls who have to use birth control for one of the above reasons, and not because she cant keep her legs closed.

Re: Over the counter birth control

In which case it can obtained through a prescription. Start prescribing it to 2 year olds if it starts curing cancer. Over the counter availability love, let's stay in context.

Re: Over the counter birth control

BC is used for a variety of reasons and is available without prescription from PP centers in the US. However, what makes me uneasy is that making bc easily accessible will lead to a rise in premarital sex and that has been the case. A greater focus seems to be on it preventing consequences such as pregnancies and STDs, but on the other hand it's spreading something immoral. I understand the idea of teens being safe if they're going to have sex, but it's like preventing the spread of some issues in exchange for promoting the spread of a societal ill.

There will be ways for teenage girls to get their hands on bc someway or the other even in Pakistan, but I still think there should be regulations as to whom bc is dispensed to as opposed to making it super-duper easily available.
