As some of you might have read my XAMPP and forms thread… this is a continuation.
I gave up on the formmail.pl stuff.
Now, I found this at sourceforge.
Its a complete solution to Survey/Forms. It crates surveys, as well as stores the info in a sql database.
I’ve installed it with my XAMPP, and I go through the setup. I configure it the way it wants, but, when it comes to getting to use it, theats when i hit a road block.
When I click on links within OSP, the pop-up windows come up blank. They should have stuff in them, but they’re blank. I tried this in IE as well, and the same thing. The support for this is very limited (mostly in DUTCH)
Has anyone used it that can shed some light on this …
then I thought, there is a linux version for both XAMPP and OSP, so I'll try that. So I fired up my vmware, and ran fedora 3 on it. installed XAMPp. Installed OSP, but got stuck in the installaition. It need domxml library (for PHP), and I can't figure out how to do that.
Why are you looking for short cuts? Who suggested you to install XAMP?
Yesterday, I told you the best way to setup WAMP on your machine by installing all components separately and configuring them manually. That’s the way most of the developers go.
Do you think XAMP is for novice developers who do not know how to configure PHP, MySQL and Apache alltogether?
Absolutely wrong! XAMP and other similar packages are not for beginners. Those bundles of applications are meant to be used by developers who already know how to configure but due to lack of time they prefer setting up server with common settings and make any minor changes as desired.
For beginners like you, there is only official documentation to learn from
Believe me, you will remain stuck if you dont RTFM of PHP and Apache.
At this stage (when you cant figure why there are those blank pages coming up), I dont think that explaining DOM and PECL to you will be of any use.
Anyway, if you ever makeup your mind to adopt the proper way to setup a neat and clean web server then dont forget to download:
Before installing, make it sure that ports 80, 3306, 25 etc are not occupied by any XAMP service. You should totally uninstall XAMP before continuing.
Do this and tell me if you encounter any problem. After this we will go for MySQL and Perl.
And if it seems to be so difficult then honestly! you should not waste your time and go back to Adobe.
here is the deal. i'm not trying to learn php or perl, or whatever. just trying to figure out how to use/make forms, survey, etc. Now to make these forms/surveys, i'm using available tools to help me do that.
if i wanted to code these things myself, i would learn php, perl, whatever. its like if i want to make a webpage, i can load up dreamweaver, or the notepad. I prefer dreamweaver. I don't want to see the code unless its absolutely necessary ..
These kinds of apps are absolutely for beginners and novices. Experienced developers should never be stuck where they have to reinstall the whole environment anyway. Otherwise experience ka fayeda kia?
did you have to recompile php with the domxml option enabled? if yes, how did you do it. i didn't find any dir where i could run the ./configure ..... option within xampp ..
absolutely wrong
A beginner who cannot understand one configuration file of standalone Apache, can never understand many configuration files of Apache, PHP, Perl, MySQL… alltogether.
That’s why I suggested nomaan to read official installation notes and install components one by one. A neat, easy and proper way of starting development.
It’s the required time for configuration. You tiny brain.

Although a professional, I believe, would compile his own. In fact, he will never even downlaod the sources without verifying the hash.
getting back to topic ... i dumped that OpenSurverPilot, and got another package. It is phpsurveyor. I've configured it, and is working perfectly.
only problem i'm having now is emailing the invites. I've setup the smtp server, and can connect to it with outlook, but it only emails to local account, like postmaster@localhost, or admin@localhost... i want to use it to send out email, so that I can mass email the intended study participants from within the survey setup.
so, the SMTP server that comes with XAMPP is Mercury (makers of pegasus mail). does anyone have any ideas on what i should do. this is the last step i think for me.
Absolutely!! I did a test install when I saw nomaan’s thread and it took me a total of 3 mnts to do the install. No .ini’s no .cfg’s. The only thing to make sure of is that you dn’t already have conflictin applications running (e.g. if u have IIS or PWS running then Apache might throw a tantrum).
Ihteshaam, its not nice to call people names when you don’t even understand what the issue is. I’m sure your heart was in the right place, but first you should figure out if understand the question.
nomaan if you are so smart then why havent you tried Google for your pathetic questions? I mean did you try DOMXML on Google before asking on Gupistan and waiting for newbies like me to answer? or are you so duffer to Google for path to Perl problem?
It's you who has known XAMP for a week. It might be a new and certainly an easy way for you to setup a web server (because it seems like you are a graphics guy who is trying his level best, these days, to do some programming and also believes in working with standrad configuration of XAMP ha ha ha rather than listening to some honest suggestions of a little more experienced guy around) but I've been watching XAMP and such bundles for years now.
Oh by the way, there is plenty of stuff on microsoft.com about their products. Go and watch the way they market their products, while a world is annoyed of those products.
So dont show me the selfproclaimed and misleading material from XAMP's website.
I may not be able to assist you further for I feel so dumb suggesting something to a code god.
Good luck with your programming! :)
Everyone gets alteast two choices in every condition.
Left and Right, Yes and No, Right and Wrong, Proper and Improper.
For instance,
You can rely on an unrecognized article on any website -OR- you can rely on the official articles on the official website recognized by millions of professionals.
You can find a short-cut and quickly become an ignorant programmer (actually not a programmer) for a very less time -OR- you can adopt the longer way, study the manuals, understand the technicalities and become a well-informed programmer
All I can see is that you are trying to prove that XAMP is better and easier than sources and binaries available on php.net and apache.org.
Do you also think that apache httpd group and the development team of php are idiots who provide packages for download and maintain the documentation?
