Opening URL in MS Outlook

Outlook 2003 latest patch
Windows XP SP2 Professional

Few weeks ago I accidently selected Powerpoint when opening up a URL link in Outlook (when prompted, and selected Always use this application for this type of file etc). That resulted in a problem that whenever I click on a link ending with html or aspx etc, it opens in Powerpoint, which I don’t want ofcourse.

I tried in Registry but couldn’t find where I can change file association. It happens only in the links in Outlook. Rest of the application and browser links open in default browser. It doesn’t give me option to open link and select application again so I can correct it.

Any registry key or trick to correct this problem.

Re: Opening URL in MS Outlook

Try “re-registering” PowerPoint.

  • Quit PowerPoint if it’s running. If you use Windows Vista, turn UAC off .
  • Choose Start, Run
  • Click “Browse” and navigate to POWERPNT.EXE (normally in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OfficeXX, where XX is your Office version)
  • Click POWERPNT.EXE then click Open.
  • The full path to POWERPNT.EXE is now in the Run box; at the end of the path, type a space then ** /regserver**
  • Click OK
  • PowerPoint will start and re-register itself, including resetting the correct file associations. Quit PowerPoint when it finishes.
  • If you turned Vista’s UAC off earlier, you can turn it back on now.

Re: Opening URL in MS Outlook

This works for ppt files not other way around. I am having problem with .html .url .aspx links in Outlook.

Re: Opening URL in MS Outlook

Uninstall power point and it will release the file types associated with it. Now associated them with IE and reinstall the power point.
