Hundreds of GTA Muslim men in polygamous marriages – some with a harem of wives – are receiving welfare and social benefits for each of their spouses, thanks to the city and province, Muslim leaders say.
Mumtaz Ali, president of the Canadian Society of Muslims, said wives in polygamous marriages are recognized as spouses under the Ontario Family Law Act, providing they were legally married under Muslim laws abroad.
“Polygamy is a regular part of life for many Muslims,” Ali said yesterday. “Ontario recognizes religious marriages! for Muslims and others.”
He estimates “several hundred” GTA husbands in polygamous marriages are receiving benefits. Under Islamic law, a Muslim man is permitted to have up to four spouses.
However, city and provincial officials said legally a welfare applicant can claim only one spouse. Other adults living in the same household can apply for welfare independently.
The average recipient with a child can receive about $1,500 monthly, city officials said.
So this is News to me,… was not aware that Canadian Society recognizes Polygamy as Practiced under Islamic Sharia…
It only follows now that a big chunk of the Canadian Oil Fields are owned by is it Dubai or UAE?
Only a Matter of time the rest of British Empire starts recognizing Sharia like the Arch Bishop of Canterbury wants Sharia Laws applied to England!

Really? I had no idea about harems. I have never met anyone with more than 1 wife.
Used to hear about it from grand mother about back in the day, but all we heard were problems and issues due to jealousy, fighting, step children, and dividing up the land and house. Can't imagine what a girl's self esteem goes through.

I find it a little hypocritic when all these muslim girls in abayas and hijab walk around as the are very much into islam but you propose the idea of their husbands or future husbands having a second wife and all the ferver gets flushed down the toilet.

Its rather ridiculous that these men have multiple wives and are collecting welfare. I mean if you cant support one properly, why the hell do you have to marry more. If the condition as some think is that there should be consent of the other wife and the man can be able to give them both equal lifestyles, it really does not mean that the equal lifestyle is based on khairaat and handouts from the state.

Polygamy is allowed but there are conditions to be met. It is not a regular part of islamic life and definitely not encouraged.
One of the conditions is that you have to be able to support each one of your wives with your own hard earned wealth. Like X2 said, if these guys are getting welfare to support them then that person's second marriage becomes void IMHO.

its neither encouraged nor discouraged; it is what it is. Allah has said that if you can treat your wives equally in all aspects of life then you can marry a maximum of four; if you can't then marry only one.

I mean since when is it such a regular part of life for American/Canadian desis to be polygamous? yes it’s allowed but i doubt it’s so regular but rather just a rare occurrence.
anyway most guys who boast abt wanting 4 wives, can’t even get 1.

guys who boast about wanting 4 wives know that they can atleast financially afford more than one; and we all know how parents of single gals druel over guys making the big $$$.

You have to be able to financially provide for your wife and that is a requirement to get married. I agree with X2 and cheegum. If you have to take welfare, then you shouldn't have married more than 1 to begin with. Only exception to that is if you lost wealth after your marriages.

doesn't earn a cent, stays home all day, lives on welfare and yet multiple women are more than willing to stay with him, even if he is not able to support and provide for them.
The math doesn't add up..... or am i missing something here?
