Ontario car insurance

So I just checked what a typical car insurance premium would be for me after I move to Toronto, and discovered from a few online quoting sites that it’s over 4 times what I’m paying here in London, UK.

Ok, admittedly it’s because my 6 years of safe driving experience in the UK don’t count in Canada, and cos I’m a single male aged 23 with zero Canadian insurance or driving history, but I’m still in a bit of shock. The worst part is that it doesn’t matter whether I try and insure myself on an 8 year old Honda Civic or a 2 year old Volvo S60, the cost still seems $7000 - $8000 per year.

So… any companies AT ALL out there out there that are friendly to the single male aged 23 with zero driving/insurance history in Canada, or am I condemned to having a hole ripped in my wallet until I build insurance history?

On a separate note, how expensive is petrol in Canada these days?

welcome to the club bhai
i am in the same situation as you are and the only suggestion that my insurance guy gave was that get married…:smack:

gas prices are like 80 cents plus or minus per litre these days.

:ahaa:

Any guppans willing to help me bring down my future car insurance premiums?

j/k

Well, the only good thing is that since I’m soooo badly screwed on insurance regardless of what car I buy I may as well get something real nice.

That is exactly what i did upto the point my finaces allowed.

whenever you come down let me know i will try to hook you up with my agent. i have given him so much business that he once said to me that if i provide him with an outside GTA(Greater Toronto Area) address he will lower my insurance. But i don’t have anyone living outside this area :crying:

That’s insane! I haven’t heard of such rates before. Try this site. Although it’s for people with a Canadian license, I’m sure you can contact the company they send you a quote from and find a better rate than $7000-$8000.

wow after reading the CB's reply i realised that M_S you mentioned $7000-$8000, man that is expensive.... i pay like $3500 and i think even this is alot.

MS, I hope you realise you will have to do a driving test and go through all the testing like everybody else. I wouldn't be worrying about car insurance just yet. :p

^ Yeah, exactly. I have heard some horror stories about Canadian driving tests.

But then again, I am sure our mad_scientist is an experienced road-warrior and will ace these tests in no time. Right, maddy?

hahahaha, driver's from England have particular difficulties. The road rules there compared to here are soooo different.

MS ... whatever you do, remember the speed limit.

My father had to do the test around 6 times ... that's after driving in England for more than 20 years. The rules are quite different here. :p

Haha.. you have just handed M_S something to gloat about (once he gets the license after 5 attempts).

On a brighter note, M_S, worry not. My brother got his license in the first try, and then he also got the G-2 thingy on the first attempt (I am not sure what it is, but supposed to be something good). So there is hope!

Wrong

As the holder of a British driving licence for over 3 years, I am instantly entitled to a full class G driving licence in Ontario, subject to a vision test and showing my British licence.

You Canadians still know how to treat your British overlords correctly :stuck_out_tongue:

Drivers from the United Kingdom, United States, Japan, Republic of Korea, Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland or Canadian Forces - Europe

2 or More Years of Driving Experience Within the Last Three Years

If you are a licensed driver with two or more years of driving experience from one of these jurisdictions, you may get full Class G licence privileges without taking a knowledge or road test. However, you must pass a vision test and show acceptable proof of your previous licence status and driving experience.

Well that must be new then, cause they wouldn’t accept my daddy’s British licence in the 80s. :snooty: It really wouldn’t surprise me if they make you do all the testing.

I think they not get revenge by making us pay stupid amounts for insurance. That figure of $8000 I got was from the website Carebear gave :frowning:

I mean, for a guy with 6 years of driving experience without an accident a Volvo S60 should be reasonable … it should certainly not be $7000 without tax and $8050 with tax!

That was a 2 year old Volvo S60 … for comparison, I tried to get a quote from that site on an 8 year old Honda Civic and it spat back $6300 before tax! That, over $7000 with tax!

Canadian insurers hate me

And if you really want to make sure, may I suggest a quiet anonymous letter to your Department of Motor Vehicles alerting them to a possible road hazard from UK. Throw in some terrorism bit just for the heck of it!

You have to shop around MS and these websites aren’t accurate. You will be able to get cheaper deals when you talk directly with insurance agents. Khair, if it makes you feel any better, I pay less than a grand a year … and even that is covered by daddy dearest.

If all else fails, use a bus. I have heard Candian public transport is pretty good. :k:

^^

I will have the Volvo S60 that is my right and I don’t care how much it costs to insure it :snooty:

I will curse Canadian auto insurance companies forever but I WILL treat myself to seriously nice car to start my new life :grumpy:

Firstly, do you know if the place you're gonna be working for provides Auto Insurance under Group Benefits?

Secondly, I agree with Mehnaz... all them Consumer Hotline websites aren't the best possible quotes you can get out there. For me, I got quotes from companies that friends and family had insurance with - talking to an agent and actually telling them what you just told us Re: "6 years of driving experience in U.K. n you don't have to even go through the road tests" will definitely help!

For me, the cheapest I got was DirectProtect, so you can try them. I'm in the process of buying a 2003 Acura 3.2CL... this, a major upgrade from my existing 1997 Pontiac Grand Am, and my insurance is shooting up from $1300 to $2300 a year (combined for Auto and Apartment Contents though).

No, I get group dental & medical cover but not auto cover :frowning:

Anyway, thanks for the advice Umar. I guess I’ll wait till I get to Toronto at the end of the year and then start begging and pleading directly with insurance companies :teary1:

maddy,

I feel your pain bro, check this! i am 24 years old, single, and i was supposed to pay $420 per month with full coverage or $340 for third party insurance on a 97 2 door acura integra. I got a job at this company as a drive and i got the companies group insurance and i pay about $150 per month now
