One-third of world's poor in India

Poverty in India is widespread with the nation estimated to have a third of the world’s poor. WB estimates that 456 million Indians (42% of the total Indian population) now live under the global poverty line of $1.25 per day

India is home to roughly one-third of all poor people in the world. It also has a higher proportion of its population living on less than

$2 per day than even sub-Saharan Africa.

That is the sobering news coming out of the World Bank’s latest estimates on global poverty. The fine print of the estimates also shows that the rate of decline of poverty in India was faster between 1981 and 1990 than between 1990 and 2005. This is likely to give fresh ammunition to those who maintain that economic reforms, which started in 1991, have failed to reduce poverty at a faster rate.

India, according to the new estimates, had 456 million people or about 42% of the population living below the new international poverty line of $1.25 per day. The number of Indian poor also constitute 33% of the global poor, which is pegged at 1.4 billion people.

India also had 828 million people, or 75.6% of the population living below $2 a day. Sub-Saharan Africa, considered the world’s poorest region, is better — it has 72.2% of its population (551m) people below the $2 a day level.

The estimates are based on recently recalculated purchasing power parity (PPP) exchange rates , which makes comparisons across countries possible. The dollar exchange rates being referred to here, therefore, are not the ones used in normal exchange rates.

While the full report has not yet been released, a briefing note sent by the Bank had some of the data and showed that the poverty rate — those below $1.25 per day — for India had come down from 59.8% in 1981 to 51.3% by 1990 or 8.5 percentage points over nine years. Between 1990 and 2005, it declined to 41.6%, a drop of 9.7 percentage points over 15 years, clearly a much slower rate of decline.

An FAQ on the new estimates, also provided by the Bank, however states, “India has maintained even progress against poverty since the 1980s, with the poverty rate declining at a little under one percentage point per year.”](“One-third of world's poor in India: Survey | India News - Times of India”)

Re: One-third of world's poor in India

What can I say. It is just sad.

Re: One-third of world's poor in India

India has 1/6th of world population. Its not a surprise that one-third of world's poor are in India, is it?

And China is what part of world population? India has more poverty because Extremist Hindus spend their money on buying Russian and now American weapons. They have their 'world vision' to defeat Pakistan.

Re: One-third of world's poor in India

China has socialist/communist system of economy, you cant compare their poverty ratio with India.

Then you shouldn't either compare world population with India's one. India is a deserted island on Mars.

In extremist hindu country there are many muslims in army /politics too who also have a say in making decisions for buying weapons.

There is nothing left in defeating pakistan.it is already been defeated by their own people.

There is no big defeat like hunger & starvations, it has no race religion or color.

Re: One-third of world's poor in India

Figures are very interesting & certainly show that india has a a long way to go.But it is trying its utmost & it is estimated that in about 5 years things should improve alot.I shall however request our friends to have a look at following data.
A per capita income of pakistan as compared to india - lattest figures.
B percentage of gdp spending by pakistan & india on a-defence-b- education c- health separately.
C poverty levels comparison.
Let us not look at china or sub sahara.Better look at ourselves & do something about it.I do not have exact figures with me but I am sure things are very unfavourable for pakistan.Twice on defence ,Half on health & education.may be some knowledgeable man can help.
finally no use taking comfort from the fact that my neighbour is poorer than another friend of mine though i am poorer than him.

@ nirmalsm

                                   India Pakistan

Population 1,198,003,000 180,808,000
GDP (PPP) Per capita $2,930 $2,624
GDP $1.242 trillion $164.557 billion

Military expenditures as % of GDP
2.5% 3%

Thank you sir for providing these figures. As you can see pakistan is about 10% poorer & defence expenditure about 20% more on per capita basis.Upto 80,s pakistan was better off than india.Present growth rate is 4 to 5 % against 7 t0 9 %for india.so disparity is only going to widen.Pakistan is surviving on much reviled U.S. aid Which is coming with humiliating strings.Better run a thread on this data.I am a friend of pakistan & would like tosee it more prosprous & stable.India is capable of take care of its problems.so what is the point of this thread?

Per capita numbers are quite irrelevant in this context, because there is a huge divide between the rich & poor in India. The per capita of the upper 30% population in India will be many times that of the lower 70%.

Also, one cannot compare India wil China, because the socialist system in China ensures a basic living standard for even the person who is lowest on the food chain. Not so in India.

So maybe India should turn communist or all the poor of India should move to China?!?

In the first place why are you so obsessed with india vs china when it is a paklinks channel not a chinese. It is sure natural to know about our neighboursNodoubt 70 %of india is quite poor but it is difficult to imagine a poorer country poorer than even india. It is difficult to see any reasonable levels of prosperity with redistribution of present total gdp in either country.May be pakistan is a highly egalitarian society where everybody is equal.Pl. give some figures of disparities in pakistan.
At our present level of economy we can only distribute poverty.First we have to create wealth before we distribute it.As you can see from figures ,there is a gradual reduction in poverty in successive years.though it could be better. It is estimated that at present rate of growth by 2015 we will be reasonably ok with general levels of poverty.By 2020 things should be finePl note that many analysts believe that china is a bubble & may collapse anytime. Look at russia another ex superpower. How it suddenly broke down & today is worse than even india in some parameters. Not a good example for turning communist.
As for migration to china ,option is not available to us due to mutual hostility.May be pakistan could try as there is so much comeradery.Learn from them if you do not like indaian democratic path which is admittedly a bit slower than china.

Not surprisingly then India also has the highest number of street children in the world. Over 18 million in fact.

Majority of street children face sex abuse in India: Study

A better solution would be ensure a basic standard of living for those who are lowest in the economic food chain, something that even a capitalist country like USA does.

Good question .Capitalist country USA is 50 times richer than india & 60 times richer than pakistan.Still it cannot provide medical care for about 30% of its population.Let us come to some basic level before we start making comparisons.

Re: One-third of world's poor in India

India is a developing country with a large population. It has only a 1/3 of the USA's resources (land mass) but 3 times the population of USA. Therefore it is 9 times more difficult to transform India into a USA in terms of economic conditions.

China - because we cannot trust ANY numbers that come out of China - since all publications are strictly censored by the communist regime, no comparison makes any sense.

To a large extent India, Pakistan & Bangladesh have been depleted by foreign invaders for centuries. We could have accomplished a bit more in the 65 years but could not have become a full fledged developed country. The corruption culture, the religious differences and related wars have effectively kept all three down

Oh not to mention lack of 600 million toilets.
Well i think Indian government did find an ideal solution so that those who are deprived of loo:

Send someone to the MOON…the indian MOON MISSION…600 million people looking to the moon will definetly forget that they have to go to the toilet.

Re: One-third of world’s poor in India

^ There you go again. I am surprised that you are so interested in India’s toilets (or lack of it) when your own country is burning.

Talk about misplaces priorities…:hoonh:
