Old Wives Tales

What are some general old wives tales about predicting baby’s gender? Have they ever come true for any of you?

Some I came across are …

If you carry the baby higher, it’s a boy.
If you crave for sweet stuff, it’s a girl and vice versa.
If the baby kicks on the right side more, it’s a boy.
If you glow more during pregnancy, it’s a boy.

Re: Old Wives Tales

I have only heard:

If you carry high & it's all belly, then it is a boy.
If you carry all around, it is a girl
Also some ladies say if you have more of a glow during pregnancy, it is a boy. Hmm.

And just friend's expeirences, actually 2 of them said their pregnancy with girl was harder than with boy. They had much worst morning sickness/nausea thruout pregnancy, as opposed to just a few weeks of light nausea during boy. Who knows. Just pray everyone has easy pregnancies & healthy babies.

Re: Old Wives Tales

hey great thread!!! ok this is what ive heard from generations:

1) that khalas should rub the gums of their sisters and brothers babies.. teeth come out quickely and less painfully!
2) if you have a difficult and long pregnancy and your really big.. its a girl...
3) if you drop flour or atta then you'll be recieving guests
4) if youre craving for khatee meethe things- youre expecting!
5)if your right hand is tickley then youre recieving some good event, news.. if its the left hand then you'll be recieving negative, bad new
6)if your left eye is twitching then ward off any badness with your spit
...........ive had personal exp of 6,3 and 1... its true!!!!!!!!!!!

I have heard that as well from quite a few people...it was true for my mom and MIL in all of thier pregnancies...

hahaha…

Re: Old Wives Tales

lol at some of these. Well, other htan pelvic pain, i had a relatively easy pregnancy pain, ALhamd and i had a girl. I was also told several times, i have this “glow” etc etc which my husband attributed to makeup rather than pregnancy (). So some of these didnt work in my case.

I've definitely witnessed this to be true amongst my family and friends. And if it is, mine is a boy. I find out in a week, inshAllah.

I've heard that the level of pregnancy hormone (HCG) is often seen to be higher with girls during early pregnancy, and that is usually the cause of all the lovely morning sickness and nausea we endure. It's why I was certain in the beginning that I am having a girl -- mine were so high the nurses thought it might be twins! But since then all signs seem to point to boy.

Re: Old Wives Tales

Sahar, i barely had morning sickness (even that i made a big deal of :D ) but still had a girl.

Re: Old Wives Tales

^ LOL rubbing it in :p

My morning sickness wasn't terrible, but the evening sickness was quite bad. I still get nausea in the evenings.

Re: Old Wives Tales

When I was pregnant with my first daughter, everyone thought it was a boy because I had all those things mentioned above. One person in my office was supposedly an expert in guessing genders and he used some chinese technique. He had always been right and made these big bets. The poor dude was wrong for the first time after I had my girl.

Re: Old Wives Tales

funny I didnt have any carvings till yet, now I love the smell of fresh mithi (earth) and i was thinking that some women in pakistan eat mithi during pregnancy and so would I have if I had some that you could eat :cb:

Re: Old Wives Tales

Yeah I never really had any specific cravings for anything. From time to time I liked to indulge in sweets esp cake & ice cream.....but that's just the way I have been...love me some cake!

Well acording to the nausea theory I am having a girl because i had ALL DAY/NIGHT morning sickness. I couldn't even drink water, it would come back up. Hmm.

I didnt have any morning sickness whatsoever but I am carrying all over...I am apparently glowing as per my MIL, so lets see what it turns out to be....

Re: Old Wives Tales

You guys sure make pregnancy sound like so much fun :D

That’s funny, a nurse asked me if i ever had any craving for dirt or chalk and i started laughing…til she said really…some women crave this kind of stuff.
I wonder why, and how do they fight that craving for dirt? :hmmm:

Re: Old Wives Tales

^ Cos they need certain minerals that is found in them. Chalk - might be calcium rich? Dirt / Mud could contain other elements.

A colleagues wife had cravings for COAL (the black stuff used in fires) and INSISTED on having a chunk of coal at 11pm so he had to call his friend who lived in the sticks to ask for coal bcos that is the only place he could think of. He drove about 1 and half hour to get some and when he took it home his wife pounced on the coal and bit chunks of it like you would eat an apple.

Re: Old Wives Tales

Some one else had a craving for rubber plimsolls ( the footwear we used to wear in school for gym).

Also iron.

Toddlers and pregnant women display these cravings. Once we noticed my 2.5yo cousin at the fireplace, we asked what he was doing and he said, "Licking." He was licking the brick! We were alarmed, but his dad, a doctor, was like, "Oh he does that. It's normal. Due to mineral difficiencies."
