Old Superstitions

The eye twitching thread in Life gave me the idea of opening this thread here.

You know the old superstitions that run in Pakistan; lets make a list of 'em. I am sure they are different in different parts of the country. But here is what my dadi/nani always told me:

  1. If the kaaN crow gets a bite of the atta, guests are coming.
  2. If you wear your shirt inside-out, guests are coming.

Re: Old Superstitions

if your left (or is it right) eye is pharking, something bad is about to happen to you?

Re: Old Superstitions

:p

If your left palm is itching, you will lose money.

Re: Old Superstitions

if you have hitchki, someone is remembering you?

Re: Old Superstitions

If you walk in where people were talking about you, you will have a long life. (No matter if they were talking bad about you?)

Re: Old Superstitions

You shouldn't have milk and fish together.

Re: Old Superstitions

Re: Old Superstitions

when your purse is empty it means you are poor

ok....made that one up

Ive heard really silly ones like you musnt wash your hair on (i think) mondays...because
apparently "you will get a headache"

you mustnt wash your hair on Wednesdays because some nasty bad luck type thingy will befall your brother

mustnt wear new clothes at sunset because...I dont know

Re: Old Superstitions

I have never heard of the rain shadi one or any of the ones lazy_daisy posted.

Re: Old Superstitions

i dont know if this one is right:

if someone is doing the safai with a jharoo, you are not supposed to walk infront of the jharoo, supposed to bring bad luck or bad health

Re: Old Superstitions

If you are leaning against the railing outsde F.G, creating a scene or gawking at the female college bus, your grades will suffer.

Re: Old Superstitions

Re: Old Superstitions

Ahmadjee you havent heard them because I guess you havent talked to the little old ladies I talk to.

Re: Old Superstitions

Hm…

  1. Don’t do jharoo safai after maghrib - your wealth will be swept outside your house. I HATE this one since I like to do my cleaning in the evening usually.

  2. Don’t wash your hair at Maghrib

  3. Don’t walk under a tree at Maghrib (although most religious people will say that’s no superstition).

  4. Don’t do ANYTHING during maghrib excpet pray. Otherwise you are cursed.

Re: Old Superstitions

Things my grandma always tells me:

Don't wear black.
Don't wear new clothes/have a hear cut/cut your nails on Tuesdays.
Don't tie your jumper round your waist.
Don't leaveyour shoes upside down.

Re: Old Superstitions

Talking about Maghrib ... in my household sleeping through maghrib is a no no.

Others

  • Do not rock an empty rocking chair.

  • Don't sleep with your socks on.

Re: Old Superstitions

A couple I didn't see anyone else post above.

  • Scissors - do not unnecessarily play with them, (as you will likely end up being a nayee or hajaam?)

  • Do not fold your arms over your head. Its ok to hold your arms at the back of your head. (Apparently your hair will fall off, and its ok if they fall off from the back, but a no-no, if they fall from the top.)

Re: Old Superstitions

Saying ‘Pig’ makes your tongue unclean for 40 days.

And somewhat similar to the Maghrib-cleaning superstition - Don’t clean in the evening for it scares the angels away.
