Why is music haram? Has anyone tried to analyze this rationally?

I understand anything done in excess is bad, but listening to good music is such an uplifting experience! Why is it denied to Muslims? How does listening to music make you bad?

Most music promote Sex that is why in Islam leave Music aside even Romantic Poetry is forbidden
