Who here oils their hair regularly? What type of oil do you use? How long do you leave it on for and what difference does it make for you?
My mom used to oil my hair when I was little but I stopped doing it when I came to the U.S. I have thin, wavy hair and started getting grey’s back in my mid 20’s.
Not too long ago I was told I should start using amla oil. So I bought it and used it for the 1st time last night. Massaged it into the roots/all over hair. Kept it for 2 hours. Hair felt great afterwards. Soft and more manageable.
I was also told by a friend that mustard oil is supposed to be good for thinning hair. Anyone use this?
^ Not long at all. Everything else was my "normal" routine.
Shampooed hair once (I use a sulfate-free shampoo) and then applied conditioner and that's it. Afterwards I allowed it to air dry for like 30-40 minutes. Then applied mousse/heat protectant. Blow dried it. Used straightener this morning.
** The only reason I didn't leave the oil on overnight is b/c I don't have time to wash hair in the morning on weekdays. But I might try leaving it on overnight during the weekend.

Really? Are you using sulfate-free shampoo due to keratin treatment or just prefer it? I remember I put mustard oil a few years ago and it took forever to come out.
^ I haven’t tried mustard oil YET so maybe that’s just a difficult oil to get out?
I find the sulfate-free shampoos more gentle (I color my hair and use dryers/straightener). However, there is one shampoo I have found that has sulfates but is still SUPER gentle. It’s this one by L’oreal and I’ve bought it on Amazon before. My hair salon uses this.
Question: Do brands really make a difference when it comes to buying oil for hair? Are they all the same? Or is there a specific brand that's know as "the best"?
I’ll def look into that shampoo. I was using Nioxin for a little bit to boost my hair growth. Works in the beginning and then stops. Now I just try very hard to maintain a balanced diet including fish oil.
Btw, I use kerastase treatment to add moisture, shine and preserve the hair colour. It works wonders but you have to leave it in for 5-10 min in the shower. Best thing is to leave it for an hour + but for day to day styling 5-10 min isn’t too bad. Ask your hair expert about it, it’s a good product! It definitely does take a lot more to get mustard oil out. The denser the oil the harder to remove its traces.
I had begun a regimen of almond oil with a rosemary added to it.....definitely worked but I'm no good with consistency. Perhaps reading this thread again will motivate me to start again.....
I had been using Nioxin after my daughter was born because my hair just wasn't coming back to its natural thickness/lustre. I also noticed that in the beginning it worked great but after a few weeks there was little impact so I stopped spending the extra $$$.

That's exactly how Nioxin is.
when you say the oil 'worked' for your hair, what exactly do you mean? Just asking because we all might be trying to achieve different things.
a few years back I would use olive oil occasionally and my hair looked gorgeous after (shampoo, blow dry/styling etc).
recently I started using castor oil/olive oil combo but don't really see much difference. I leave it on for a few hours....when I oil it I shampoo it twice. I use "thickening" shampoos, that are usually more drying than the opaque/pearly looking ones.
it was regaining thickness and with no additional product applied my hair had volume and shine…
I think I even posted the amount of almond oil/rosemary/peppermint in a thread…wish I could remember what it was called…
Not really. My mom would apply mustard oil to my hair when I was a kid on the weekends and it wasn’t hard to get out. I think it can also depend on how much oil you put on.
My hair seem to like mustard oil since that was the only oil my mum used to apply on my head when I was a kid. I'd say that regular application does thicken your hair. It can be quite difficult to wash it off but like redvelvet said above, it also depends on how much you apply. Amla hair is also quite good but unfortunately I cannot tolerate the strong scent, I get a very bad headache whenever I apply that oil.
Overall I feel, regular oiling makes a huge difference to my hair but its a shame that I always abandon the routine after a little while.
almond oil and olive oil..... every friday night... wash out on sat... use an extra pillowcase so the oil doesnt seep into my pillow. overnight moisturizing... and wash out the next day. have gorgeous hair mashallah.
BUT.... diet plays an imp part too. cuz you make your healthy from within..
now i do the same routine on the kids... fridayh is oil day... baap se leke bachay thak :D
Coconut oil with one egg once in a while, and it makes a drastic difference to my hair. They are softer and look healthy.
The thing is that the consistency becomes thicker when you add the egg and you have to wrap you hair in a shower cap for at least an hour.
I met an arab woman at the desi grocery shop yesterday. She had just had her fourth child and was looking for coconut oil because someone told her to put that with an egg in her hair regularly. She did seem to have pretty thin hair.
Perhaps I'll try this too. My hair has thinned but not as significantly as some.
My problem is the same as Jolie....I start off with good intentions but can't keep the routine going for very long.....
