Re: Oiling Hair
Stupid question - instead of oil and egg, can I just use mayonnaise? I've heard others recommend mayonnaise - but would it be as effective as the oil and egg?

Re: Oiling Hair
^ how much oil do you apply and what are your exact steps for washing it out? i end up having to shampoo 2-3 times to get it all out :/
Re: Oiling Hair
from what I understand, oil is a very delicate substance whose properties and resulting impact can change depending on how much it is manipulated…by that token, it would then go that the process of turning oil and egg into mayo would change its resulting impact…
considering that substances in their purest form are often at their best, I would hazard to guess that mayo would be less effective in contributing to hair follicle health than oil and egg applied just after mixing it.

then again, I could be completely wrong.

Re: Oiling Hair
I met an arab woman at the desi grocery shop yesterday. She had just had her fourth child and was looking for coconut oil because someone told her to put that with an egg in her hair regularly. She did seem to have pretty thin hair.
Perhaps I'll try this too. My hair has thinned but not as significantly as some. My problem is the same as Jolie....I start off with good intentions but can't keep the routine going for very long.....
I swtiched to this oiling method ever since last year.......although I still prefer my almond+peppermint oil but because of emmenagogue properties of peppermint I had to stop for a while, I should mention with the coconut I find I lose much less hair than usual.....go for it and see how it works :)
Re: Oiling Hair
I don't know if its me but coconut oil gives me a really dry scalp, in fact it causes build up. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm probably in the minority.
Re: Oiling Hair
I have a oil mix that consists of coconut, argan and castor oil with a few drops of rosemary oil. I definitely want to try out jojoba, almond, and avocado oil soon!

Okay I've heard peppermint oil and tea tree oil are really good for your scalp. They open up your pores and really help with the health of your scalp.

funny you mention this.
When I was 11 or 12, my mom put mayo in my hair. I remember it was hard to wash out but my hair was just thick and luxurious......it was just lovely back then.
WheN I mentioned it to my classmates (as well as the later egg/oil combos), they called me salad head :(
Re: Oiling Hair
Coconut oil has always been my choice, it doesn't leave an after-smell and is pretty easy to wash out. Sarson or mustard oil is very heavy and it takes me atleast three shampoo applications to get it out. I tried almond oil once but didn't do any wonders for me.

No ur not the only one. It didn't suit my hair either. I felt it made my hair dry whereas olive or mustard oil don't.
Same here, it causes dandruff and ive noticed that my hair fall increases while using it.strange ![]()
Re: Oiling Hair
Update:
I used Amla oil 3x last week. All 3x I left it on overnight. Took 1 shampoo to get it out. I used a L'oreal Sulfate free shampoo.
I bought Dabur Mustard oil on Saturday and used it last night. I mixed a little bit of Amla oil in it (I'd say 80% mustard; 20% Amla). Left it on overnight and shampooed it 1x this morning. No problem getting the oil out and I did put in quite a bit (massaged into scalp and them rubbed all over hair). However........I used this Ayur Amla Shampoo that MIL gave me when visited her last time. It does contain sulfates so maybe that's why the mustard oil got out so far....but either way I kinda like it. I'll try the shampoo a few more times to see how it goes.
Question: Those of you who started oiling hair as an adult......how long after starting use did you see a noticeable difference in regards to growth, hair loss etc? Oiling definitely makes my hair softer and easier to manage. Last night when I was oiling my hair....I was looking at the amount of hair falling off and thought I looked less than normal!!! And this morning when I was in the shower and then blow dried my hair....again, the hair loss was very minimal. Not sure if it just me though. Is this too early for it to make any real difference?
Re: Oiling Hair
I use coconut oil - before showering, for at least 20 minutes, I apply to my scalp and the ends of my hair. I find it really beneficial in that it prevents (not completely, but significantly) new split ends, plus a couple of years ago it completely got rid of my dandruff! (I stopped using it on the scalp regularly after that, that's how I have it again) and it decreases frizz.
When my hair's a bit dry and damaged I use coconut oil like a serum for the length and ends of my hair 2/3 times a day - I just scrape (it's usually solid cuz I'm in England and it's usually cold) enough to cover one of my nails and that's plenty, plus it's quite a light oil - it doesn't take long to absorb so that doesn't leave me looking greasy or anything.
I also try almond oil for a more intense oiling - using about 4 tbsp, leave it on for a couple hours minimum and then it gives me really silky shiny hair - sometimes I find it softening.
I'll use olive oil on occasion but I find that harder to wash out. I have heard that if you struggle getting oil out, you should use extra conditioner and let it rest on your hair for a while.
Oiling Hair
I myself use Argan oil, which i brought bck tons of from Morroco and is Amazing natural stuff!!
I also have this natural homemade remedy which is very effective with clients for treating dry damaged hair and maintaing shiny strong healthy hair
Massage approximately 1/2 cup honey into clean, damp hair, let sit for 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water. You can also add 1 to 2 Tbsp olive oil to loosen the honey for easier application. For extremely sun-damaged hair, trying mixing honey with 1 to 2 Tbsp of a protein-rich ingredient, like avocado or egg yolk, which will help replenish the keratin protein bonds that UV rays attack. Treatment can be applied once a month.
And for wanting really shiny hair please do the following steps and let me know how you got on:
Massage 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt into damp hair and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, followed by cool water, then shampoo hair as you normally would. Treatment can be applied every other week.

Re: Oiling Hair
I use a mixture of warm coconut oil + olive oil. My hair feels sooo much softer and more manageable (less frizzy) on days when I leave the oil on overnight. Hubby hates it though
but I try to keep it on at least 2 hrs before washing my hair.
Re: Oiling Hair
I've used mustard oil in the past when I was kid and could be forced into it by my grandmother but I didn't like the smell very much. I rarely oil my haie but when I do it feels so lovely and silky and looks so shiny afterwards - I feel like a Loreal advert for the rest of the week lol. I used almond oil, it is quite sticky so you have to careful to use it sparingly or it wont all come out with 1 wash.
Stress really takes its toll hair, as I have noticed during exam time, So I normally up my regimen then, and otherwise use less oil.
Aside from oil, if you have a chronic hair loss problem, it could be due to the contraception you are taking, I know that the last time I was on the pill, for umrah, my hair fell out in buckets. Every time I'd take a shower, my mum would just hear me crying from the bathroom because I thought I was going bald before I'd managed to trap a man into marriage with me. lol.
Re: Oiling Hair
I use Almond oil and olive oil sometimes I add Castor oil too..... every Saturday night, I leave it overnight, wash out on Sunday.
Re: Oiling Hair
I tried using coconut oil after reading the reviews here and it gave me such an itchy scalp! Has it happened with anyone before? I couldn't wait to take it off and the itchiness remained till my next wash. Also I feel I shed a lot of hair that day when I washed my hair. I wanted to cure my dandruff so is this normal after coconut oil?

Never happened to me, and I've been using coconut oil all my life. Are you perhaps allergic to it?
