Offensive in our culture(s)

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

Kind of surprised no one mentioned stuff like greeting the opposite gender with a kiss (on the cheek or lips) or a hug. It’s considered the norm in the west, but a big no no in the Middle East.

Yeah that is kinda odd. Why would people do that.

LOL we have something like that.

But with us, its the parents and younger two sibs that escort guests and the two eldest attack the food

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

^ I love it! Going to try and convince a change around here!

Because it’s considered “normal”, lol idk.

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

Just being friendly (or over friendly to others)..

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

It’s still odd. And not just from a religious perspective. Or it’s just my head that’s always stuck in the gutter, but that’s just how all male chimps are, sorry humans.

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

Cheek touching or kissing even in males is probably more common in middle east.

But, lip kissing, is not that common in west.

Hugs are given only to close friends, relatives or significant other. And that is common everywhere.

Although most would consider it odd, kissing on the lips isn’t that uncommon. For example, parents (mostly moms from what i’ve seen) kiss their children, young and old, on the lips and/ or cheek. I don’t understand it, but I don’t question it either. to each their own.

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

Yes, so you were talking about parents, not just opposite gender people in general.

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

Well… If I was a guy, my mom would DEF be of the opposite gender :hat:

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

^ That is why I added the words ‘in general’.

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

in old days, in rural India, saying salaam to women was considered bad…men used to say “tasleem/tasleemaat” to women.

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

aadab tasleemaat.. long time no see

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

hahahaha…kia yaad dilaa dii…aadaab/tasleemaat!

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

In western culture, when an elder is talking to you/scolding you, you have to maintain the eye contact or else it is considered super rude.

And in desi culture, you shouldn’t dare to look into their eyes, just keep staring your shoes for a while.

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

Touching feet of the elders is definately a Hindu custom rather I would say Indian culture because there a lot of people who are not Hindus but yet do it. But nobody kisses feet and all, at least not that I have seen or heard.

Re: Offensive in our culture(s)

In western culture a loud burp is considered more rude…
In eastern culture a loud fart is considered more rude
