Headscarf no barrier to beauty contest, BBC, 29 July 2004

A woman wearing a traditional Muslim headscarf is competing to become the next Miss Indonesia.

Despite her hair being covered, 18-year-old Andina told the state Antara news agency that she would prove she could still win the contest.

Although Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim nation, the vast majority of women do not cover their heads - including the other 29 Miss Indonesia contestants.

But Andina is from the province of Aceh, where Muslims often practice a more conservative version of Islam. According to the French news agency AFP, the judges have said they will assess Andina differently from the other finalists - looking at how she arranges her headscarf rather than looking at her hair.

According to Putri Kuswisnuwardhani, the chairwoman of the Miss Indonesia Foundation, brains, beauty and behaviour will all be assessed in deciding who will become the next Miss Indonesia.

interesting........

Will see have to wear swimsuit etc etc?

jus wonderin, i thought the signifance of the role of hijab is to prevent men from ogling at women, then why wear a hijab n let men n women judge u? does that not defeat the purpose of the hijab? Jus a question

and next we will have hijabi bar-tenders…
and hijabi strippers…
and hijabi prostitutes…

its a mockery of hijab, nothing else…

oh man

my dad was telling me abt this last nite nadz

we were both laughing :hehe:

“hijab and beauty contest” weirdness

actually, i dont think theres anything wrong with it if (and the picture here doesnt really go too far in judging it) the contestants do remain within the confines of Islam in the competition.

Theres nothing wrong with projecting an appealing Islamic figure, infact seems to be a clever way of combating the impact of appealing unIslamic figures. (figure as in entity :-/)

^^

*knock knock knock…wake up :hoonh:

HIJAB is sposed to be a sign of modesty, ure not sposed to flaunt ur beauty

so a beauty contect is like totally against that concept and defeating the very purpose!

bibi, jabhi to kaha, agar Islamic bounds may ho to.

And modest can also be beautiful.

If a person can remain within Islamic bounds while remaining in the contest, and still manages to project herself as beautiful, whats wrong with that? Do you believe that Islamic injunctions are somehow incomplete enough to allow the person to still be immoral/indecent while adhering to them :hoonh:

I completely agree with Deviliciousss and Irem.

A womans beauty is for her mahrems and husband to see not to be paraded on stage.

Aurat ek beti hoti ha, behn hoti hai, maa hoti hai, biwi hoti aur jab woh inn mein se kuch bhi nahein hoti to tawaaif hoti hai.

how thought provoking...

Hijab + Beauty Contest = Contradiction in terms.

The two cant exist together.

watch your tongue kid when talking about women in general, otherwise, all i can say is:

for all practical purposes this is unfortunately only true for the women in your family.

my take on the topic:

female participation in beuaty pageants is what i think might be
considered disallowed in islam, hijab or no hijab.

the ayat on this matter says something along these lines:
cover your modesty except those which will normally be seen
(face, hands, feet etc., according
to your relgious outlook).

nowhere mind you does it say, kay chehra bigar kay chalo, taakay khoobsarat
nazar aanay koee chance nahee rahay.

in this sense, one can only say pageants are not allowed, not
the idea that muslim women cant appear beautiful in public.

as for the tawaif part, i want to see kay app kis Qurani ayat o Hadith ki rooh say
yeh farma rahay hain.

I've heard many hijabi women explain that wearing hijab isn't just about hiding your beauty and being modest. They say that you can easily be modest without wearing hijab. Many women wear hijab to show that they are Muslim women and proud of their religious identity. I guess that reasoning doesn't keep you from entering a beauty contest.

If we put lion's teeth on a goat, would the goat become a lion?

If we put books on a donkey, does the donkey become literate?

If we give a Hindu a Muslim name, does he become a Muslim?

Irem is right...The idea behind the Hijab or 'veil' is just that...To veil one's shame out of modesty, not parade it around for everyone to see...

Kills the whole concept really...What'll we have now, Hijab by Christian Dior?

to sahar:
you can come up with a million defiinitions if modesty and female standing in islam, but there are a limited number that are in sync with whats written in the Quran and Hadith.

even then, there are a few people here on board that like to go over board, and make their own bhayanak versions of islam, which have no backing from Quran or Hadith at all.

so for example if they did compete in a segregated setting, why would it be against Islam?

i am not an alim, i wud suppose that is prob. allowed.
laikin phir aik aur masla aa jata hay.
i doubt making the pics of any such event public, comes under the fold of Islam.

is it true muslims are largest conusumers of pornagraphy due to sexual
segrgation ?
