Observations in Lahore....

Re: Observations in Lahore....

Don't get me wrong folks, Lahore is my city too, but all this talk about improvement is bs. It hurts to see it in ruin.

Divine-Bati: You are in denial, you Chamoona. Are you related to CH. Pervert Ilahi? Your jamaat armed students in Lahore creating law and order situation. Only Jamaat is dumb enough to burn public property and shutdown the city for someone publishing cartoons in a foreign country.

Saieen: Khoo ka dadoo is the one who doesn't know better, you istunja.

Mostar: Lush and green is only in Shalimar Garden now.

Mizrani: The plane must have landed by mistake in a pind. Pakistan has airports in almost all pinds.

Roman: Dude, I stood infront of Pizzeria Uno and still couldn't believe it was suppose to be upscale. Defense is not Lahore dude.

Gamma: I wanted to so bad.

  1. Anaar ka Juice in Liberty was pretty good.

I guess I can take the bad food comment back, no one has better food than Lahore.

Re: Observations in Lahore....

Roman: Dude, I stood infront of Pizzeria Uno and still couldn't believe it was suppose to be upscale. Defense is not Lahore dude.

Actually it's not. pizzeria uno is supposed to be a "mid class" restaurant. Most of these places are middle class. upscale may be a relative term. true elite or upscale place would be something like that club on nehar ( I don't remember its name..may be it's called palm club) or PC or polo club etc. Defense is Lahore last time I checked the naqsha and real estate market. If you take Lahore as literal name then it truly is the Old/purana Lahore inside 12 doors.

The problem with Lahore is that there is too much polarity in the classes. Top with that the fact that in recent years there has been humongous migration from villages to city due to economic conditions in rural areas.

I was in Lahore During last bakra eid and up until one day before bakra eid the traffic was really bad and everything was congested or claustrophobic but magically a day before till a day after bakra eid, Lahore roads were 'sunsaan'. You could drive freely without much traffic woes. The reason? A huge chunk of population had left for native villages to celebrate Eid/be with family etc.

Re: Observations in Lahore....

When one talks about Lahore he/she is not talking about Defense, it's just a neighborhood in Lahore. People don't come to see defense.

Re: Observations in Lahore....

^ actually they do. There are some good shopping places there where you can go and shop. The also have some good eatery places including a carry out shawarma and pizza place etc.

When people talk about Lahore they don't talk about Gulburg either but your visit is incomplete without going there (checking out liberty chowk, drinking some juice, having some paan, eating at mm aalim road, or shopping there).

What do you make out Lahore to be? It's not a specific "spot" or anything. It's all the boroughs/neighborhoods combined. It's a historic and cultural district which is mainly Purana Lahore and 12 doors areas, anar kali etc as well as commercial (mall road etc) and suburban areas including gulberg, iqbal town, defense, model town etc. When someone goes to Lahore to visit he/she tends to check out different facets of it. That includes all or most places and events and people and what not.

Let me ask you a question: Which areas did you visit when you went Lahore?

Re: Observations in Lahore....

Mainly Defense, Allama Iqbal Town, Liberty, Fortress, Qadafi, Mall Rd, anarkali etc.

I had shawarma and paan in defense, it was purty good.

But dude, there was no major Improvement that everyone keeps talking about. The only improvement worth talking about is the motorway. That's a job well done.

Re: Observations in Lahore....

well, you must have not seen Lahore in 80's in that case...

Re: Observations in Lahore....

That's my point, there is no positive change since then. It has deteriorated since. I was living in Lahore between 80-86.

Re: Observations in Lahore....

Ok, let's do a comparison from 80's to early 90's vs now:

1- if you had traveled along side nehar, they have underpasses there now which is a major thing in terms of controlling traffic. with population explosion in Lahore if we didn't have those underpasses, we'd be fk'ed.

2- GaRhi shah bridge -- if you remember even in 80's it was "expired" and was a threat. The way political situation has been I don't think there was ever any hope to build a new one. Check it out now. We've got a new one it was built in record time. I does look a little narrower I think but I think it's a good thing it's a divider now.

3- Bridge from Gulburg to Defense -- I have seen the traffic in that area on daily basis. It's still a b*tch but without that bridge your best bet is to walk or send smoke signals instead of commuting.

4- The highway around airport areas -- I don't remember its name but once someone gave me ride and we went from that side to Sadar/mughalpura area -- the road and the intersections there looked like I was in some US town highway--it was pretty wide and clean.

5- New Airport looks better -- although airport in its entirety is a negative point. They friggin' spent so much money on it and only made 6 runways so # or airlines serving Lahore is still pretty limited. We expats still don't get friggin' direct flights to Lahore from US other than PIA so we're pretty much screwed and stuck with PIA.

6- Shaad Bagh area/behind railway station area / misri shah area - I remember the amount of water you could see when it'd rain. to my surprise some of the main roads there were newer and well kept (I didn't see all of them).

7- Bypass/road going from gulburg to smanabad/shah jamal area - that bypass is also new and there is even an entrance to motorway from there.

8- Johar town area -- for once a new development has better planning. They still need some better roads but road going from johar town yateem khana etc is quite wide and highway like

9- I already mentioned jail road, farozpur road etc. They were in pretty good condition even back in early 90's but with addition of bypasses things are better compared to what they could be.

10- Big improvements in preserving cultural heritage -- two new food markets in past 10 years with historic buildings preservation along side of mall and anarkali areas -- there is definitely an awareness there to keep the old culture and buildings.

11- GT Road and Link Road that serve Baghbanpura and Mughalpura areas are petty good and wider than before. They even demolished a so called mizaar that was sorta right in the middle of GT road to make room for wider road there. It was nice to see lesser encroachments on GT road now. Link road is pretty well kept.

12- I went to Wahga border last time I was in Pak, actually to pick ChannMahi who visited me in Lahore when I was there...along side I saw construction going on for the road to wahga. If they'd actually build that road, it will be pretty wide and convenient. I just think it's gonna take a long while now.

I'm sure I'm missing quite a lot of stuff. But the point is not only these are "improvements" but think in terms of how things are in Pakistan and then imagine how all the roads/bridges would be from 80's till now...I'm sure most of these roads would have been deteriorated by now if not improved or rebuilt.

Re: Observations in Lahore....

^
yea most of that was completed in 90s. or atleast in the plans.
The good thing is that those roads, bypass bridges etc. are still in good condition.

There were plans to develop Johar Town in 90s. I'm not sure what happened to those plans.
Airport was completed but there were plans to build more runways in future. wonder what happened...

Re: Observations in Lahore....

All the mentioned improvements have not done much to change the feel of the city. I think it's a bigger challenge which requires resources and out of the box thinking.

I'm just sayin this city needs to be put back on the map and restored to it's old glory.

Re: Observations in Lahore…

thats why one should never venture in big cities of pakistan. Thats why islamabad rocks…

Re: Observations in Lahore....

gubru, the only way ANY improvement will be visible in Lahore is building well planned suburbs and controlling population explosion. Of course nothing will ever be visible no matter how much you spend and build if the city is overcrowded.

Re: Observations in Lahore....

IMO, Lahore should have it's own immigration laws. You'll have to apply for a visa to visit lahore and so on.

Re: Observations in Lahore…

islamabad is a bland, dull, boring, city, with about as much personality as sioux falls, south dakota.
There is no way islamabad can be compared to lahore. It simply does not have teh character, the personality and history..

Re: Observations in Lahore....

and get visas to leave too? ;)

Re: Observations in Lahore…

isb rocx? u got it wrong buddy…isb doesn’t ROCK…it is A ROCK…boring…dull…dead…ROCK…was there in august n didn’t like it a single bit…stupid city…no shape…no character…no personality…just like the politicians that live there…:nook:

Re: Observations in Lahore....

Re: Observations in Lahore....

Re: Observations in Lahore....

if thats what you mean by no kutchra on the streets

if thats what you mean by no robberies/murders in day time then yes

if youre a loser and know nothing, then year, you'd be bored then yea

no ones comparing it friend. lahore can't be compared to such a beautiful and sophisticated city of isloo anyway. confused hain aap thoray shahyad. all lahore has is claims of paindooness "ASIAS biggest this" "ASIAS biggest that" lol

okok okoko all jokes aside. what does that even mean. lol just answer this.

Re: Observations in Lahore....
