Three arrested over e-mail threat to New Zealand team

LAHORE, Nov 18: Police on Tuesday arrested three owners of an Internet cafe, traced the domain and e-mail address allegedly used for sending a threat to the New Zealand Cricket Board (NZCB).

“We have found out in the so far investigation that it is not a work of any terrorist organization. It seems to be a job of some youngster(s) who did it just for creating a sensation,” city police chief Khwaja Khalid Farooq told Dawn.

“We in league with intelligence agencies are working on the case, and we have also sought the help of cyber experts.” It is learnt that special teams comprising police officials, its cyber crime wing, and private computer experts and the intelligence agencies were assigned the task to track down the hacker(s).

“No need to worry about the threat as it has no potential in reality to alarm the visiting team,” the police chief said and added that his force was taking all measures against the threat.

"The South African cricket team was also concerned over its security, but nothing wrong happened during the visit due to our elaborate security arrangements. “Let me assure that there would be no problem at all as far as the security and police job were concerned,” Mr Farooq said.

The accused hacker(s) had sent an e-mail to the NZCB threatening its management and team members with dire consequences on account of their forthcoming visit to Pakistan in Ramazan.

A senior police officer, who is also part of the investigation teams, said the NZCB had referred the mail to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that brought it to the notice of the Pakistan government, and thus the matter was assigned to Interior Minister Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat and then to law enforcers, especially those dealing with cyber crimes.

Initial work on the case, the officer said, led the law enforcers to a cyber domain falling in the jurisdiction of Lahore police. The cyber crime investigators teamed up with the Lahore police and narrowed down the probe. This led them to an Internet cafe in the city, he added.

The officer said the cafe was raided by the investigation teams and all of its record was retrieved and taken into custody, besides the owners. The officer did not disclose the name of the owners nor the cafe and the specific place where it is located, arguing that it was likely to end any hope to arrest the hacker(s). “The cafe is the only lead from where the police could find any thing if the hacker(s) visit it again.”

However, another source said names of two of the owners start with A and that of the cafe with C. The officer said the record retrieved by the police showed that the e-mail address through which the threat was sent belonged to a youngster, 22. “It might be all fake.”

Plain-clothes officials had been deployed at the cafe, including one acting as a new partner of its owners. All of the activities being carried out on all proxies and main server of the cafe were being watched by the police cyber experts, he said.

1.What kind of a sick twisted joke was that? How can anyone derive fun from depriving their own people from watching cricket. This guy should be thrown in the Indian ocean.

2.I didn’t know our intelligence agencies were this good. :k:

Fleming stays at home

Injured captain Stephen Fleming will not be considered for his team’s one-day series in Pakistan, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced on Wednesday.

Fleming was hoping to rejoin his side for their arrival in Lahore on 27 November, but the abdominal injury that forced him to miss the one-day match against India last week has not healed.

NZC medical coordinator Warren Frost said: “Stephen requires physiotherapy treatment and rest over the next three weeks to help ensure he is fit for Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand next month.”

The tour to Pakistan was finally rubber-stamped by NZC on Tuesday, despite NZC receiving a threat advising them not to play during the holy month of Ramadan.

^^ darpook:mocking:

So they’re comming huh…We need a CLEAN sweep…inshallah we will:jhanda:

Snedden to accompany NZ team to Pakistan
Lynn McConnell - November 20, 2003

Martin Snedden, is moving from the decision-making bunker out into the front lines with his players by going on tour to Pakistan with the New Zealand team next week. Snedden, who has been easily the most beleaguered cricket administrator in New Zealand's history had always intended to be in Pakistan for the last two matches.

He has faced a string of unusual situations that many sports administrators would never face in a career. These include not only the international disasters which have affected tours, but also domestic problems, most notably last summer's players' strike.

However, the former international who was on the scene as a player when New Zealand first experienced frustrations to tours caused by bombs, in Sri Lanka in 1987, is taking a "see-it-for-yourself" stance by opting to travel with the team when it returns to Pakistan next week.

He met with the team's officials in Auckland today after their return from India and in that meeting he was discussing the prospect of John Bracewell, the Black Caps coach also returning to Pakistan with the team.

Some kids in an Internet Cafe almost scared the Kiwis into going home..
ahahhaha what a bunch of loosers, hwo can you tour the world with a cowardly attitude like that. (if it was'nt Ramadan I would have some more specific terms for them :) )
We should start worrying about the series again and look at the lineup that wil probably play. Forget all the organizational stuff now.....

Kiwi selection manager Mr. Hadlee is very much looking forward for this tour to Pakistan. 14-member squad for New Zealand, with three new caps and two recalls, has been announced. Chris Cains is named the skipper of the New Zealand team.

With new Bowling combination, youngsters and stand-in Captain, Kiwis are prepared to take on Pakistan!

Three new caps and two recalls for NZ team to Pakistan

Three new caps, Tama Canning, Matthew Walker and Craig Cumming, have been named in the New Zealand team to tour Pakistan. Hamish Marshall and Kerry Walmsley have also been recalled after long spells in the wilderness.

Canning was the subject of a New Zealand query to the International Cricket Council for eligibility dispensation two summers ago when it appeared he was on the verge of making the one-day side. However, despite approval for the Australian-born Canning being given, he did not get the call-up. His parents are from New Zealand, of Maori origin, though he was brought up in Western Australia.

**Canning had an outstanding season for Auckland last year, taking 46 wickets, the most by any bowler in first-class play last year. He also scored 465 runs at 38.75, including one century. The second-highest wicket-taker, Matthew Walker with 45 wickets at 18, has also been included. Both players have been solid performers on the New Zealand scene for the last few summers and have also made their mark in the one-day game. **

The selectors, John Bracewell, Sir Richard Hadlee, Ross Dykes and Brian McKechnie have also included Cumming, the Otago captain, who scored 751 runs at 46.93 in domestic cricket last summer, including three centuries. The 28-year-old Cumming headed off the country’s highest domestic runscorer last year, Tim McIntosh, a 23-year-old who had been in good early season form for Auckland in matches with the New Zealand Academy this week.

Marshall’s recall is probably the biggest selection surprise given that he is still without a century in first-class cricket, while his one-day average is only 23.56. He made his solitary Test appearance when called as a replacement on New Zealand’s 2000 tour of South Africa. While on the tour he impressed with his attitude but has so far been unable to convert that into consistent run scoring.

**Walmsley is another interesting choice. A big, strong fast-medium bowler, he showed some signs of regaining his form last summer for Otago when he took 37 wickets on the domestic circuit. **

Chris Cairns will captain the side and it may be that the unlucky Richard Jones, who has been on two Test tours with the New Zealand side, will get to make his first appearance on this tour. Michael Mason has also been included, as expected, while Mathew Sinclair has been recalled. Daniel Vettori has been named vice-captain of the side.

**The following players were not considered for selection: Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle and Kyle Mills, who has a viral infection. Andre Adams and Matt Horne made themselves unavailable for selection. **

Hadlee, the selection manager, said: **"The absence of several established players has paved the way for some others and they will now get their opportunity. For the selectors this is exciting, as we will now get to learn something about the new players’ capabilities at international level.

“We are confident that several players will step up to the level required which will broaden our player base and create further competition for places in the Black Caps moving forward.” **

Hadlee said there was also an opportunity to look at specific areas that had been difficult for the Black Caps in recent times. **“It will be interesting to see how a new opening combination performs and how the new bowling combination performs, particularly at the end of the innings.” **

However, Hadlee was also realistic about the challenges in front of what is a relatively inexperienced squad. **“Playing Pakistan in Pakistan always presents unique pressures. However, this squad has the added challenges of having to come together at relatively short notice to then play five one-day internationals in nine days. It’s going to be a real test of their focus and professionalism.” **

  • The New Zealand Team: Chris Cairns (capt), Tama Canning, Craig Cumming, Chris Harris, Paul Hitchcock, Richard Jones, Hamish Marshall, Brendon McCullum (wk), Jacob Oram, Mathew Sinclair, Daryl Tuffey, Daniel Vettori, Matthew Walker, Kerry Walmsley.

..and the Pakistan squad has been announced as well. Junaid Zia is recalled and so is Azhar Mehmood. Taufeeq Umer(due to injury), Asim Kamal, Umer Gul(no reason given) have been dropped. Misbah-ul-Haq in for Younis Khan and Saleem Elahi for Taufeeq Umer. The selection committe has chosen Moin Khan as a wicket-keeper over Kamran Akmal.

SOURCE

The recall of Zia is contentious, but chairman of selectors Aamir Sohail insisted it was based on current form.

**"He was one of the star performers of the inter-departmental qualifying tournament, taking 35 wickets and scoring over 150 runs.

“In addition to this, he was also judged Player of the Series in Sri Lanka where the Pakistan Emerging team won the tournament.” **

  • Pakistan squad: Inzamam-ul-Haq (captain), Imran Farhat, Saleem Elahi, Yasir Hameed, Yousuf Youhana, Shoaib Malik, Abdul Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood, Moin Khan, Danish Kaneria, Shabbir Ahmed, Mohammad Sami, Shoaib Akhtar, Misbah-ul-Haq, Junaid Zia.

Why has Saleem Elahi been picked ahead of Taufeeq? Is Taufeeq injured?

Yup!

Saleem Elahi was named in the 22-member Squad because of Taufeeq's shoulder injury, which he hasn't recovered, therefore, Mr. Elahi is selected, and is likely to open Pakistan's inning with Imran Farhat.

^^ i think Mr. Elahi wont open, Yasir Hameed will open with Imran Farhat.

Abdul Rauf still not given a run in the team. Aamir Sohail once again at it. He says Junaid Zia has been picked because he was a star performer in the domestic scene, no doubt. But Abdul Rauf was a star performer since so many seasons, and Junaid Zia is picked out of the blue and out of the national camp. Aamir thought that Tauqir zia is getting mad at him gradually so he picked Junaid to remain in his good books.

Poor Abdur Rauf :( he plays for Allied bacnk and Rashid said that he is our best bowler after Sami and Shoaib and mayeb that statement pissed Sohail and he didnt pick a Rashid-backed player.
