- How many dresses did you get made?
- How many were made from the other side?
- How many dresses were heavy formal clothes? Party wear? Semi-Formal? Everyday clothes? Nighties? etc.
- How many did you get to wear so many times that were worn out? how many remained unused? How many were worn hardly once/twice?
Re: Number of dresses for wedding
My MIL gave me 3 heavy saris from India, 3 semi-formal shalwar kamizes, 1 angharka for the valima, and 1 gharara for the wedding day. She also gave me several sweaters and purses that could be used for work and everyday life in the US. She had also made me a semi-formal shalwar kamiz for my mangni.
My mother made me 2 very heavy ghararas, 1 formal gharara, 2 heavy shararas, 1 light sharara, lots of saris in various levels of heaviness from Pakistan and one from light one from Bangladesh, 2 kam wale shalwar kamiz suits, and lots of shalwar kamizes and pant suits in nice fabrics and prints but with no additional embroidery.
I've worn everything at least once, and many more than once. I also fit into them better now than I did when I first got married (they were a bit loose).

7 suits and 3 sarees, plus 3 pairs of shoes and churiyan (glass wali) and 2 bags..
10 suits, and 2 sarees. plus the wedding lengha and the mehndi jora and shoes for each outfit. and two shawls too.
from their side, everything was light, not too heavy.
ironically my favorite most used outfit has been a ready-made one that i got, its very simple, its made of khadar (??) i think and very plain with kaam only on the gala..but its so it can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. out of all of the outfits i've only worn 5.. b/c theres been only 5 occasions =//
Re: Number of dresses for wedding
From their side, MIL sent two dresses plus shoes and choorian for nikah.
For shadi, they brought 1 pishwaz for valima, 1 mehendi ka jora, 3 saris from india, and about 7-10 dresses i think. Most were unstitched for some reason. They also brought simpler, not too heavy stuff because we asked not to. There were also 3 pairs of shoes (2 were too small for me :( I have large feet) and one purse to match valima outfit.
From Ammi side, there were 7 saris including simple, every day wear ones as well as kaam wali. There were perhaps about 10-12 kaam walay joray, and several simpler/casual/semi formal ones for everyday wear, perhaps 30-35. Also included were a shawl, several pairs of matching shoes and handbags.
I have also worn everything atleast once and some even more. I would say i have gotten quite a use out of my kaam walay kapray.
well over here my cousin got married and she made 12-15 kaam walay joray, and the rest from a batch of 40 mashallah were house wear including lawn, 3-piece reshmi suits, and lightly embroidered ones.
and mashallah from her guys side they gave her the valima dress and mehndi dress, with 30 outfits in bari with included 10 kaam walay outfits. i think that good
at the engagment she recieved 6-7 suits lightly embroidered to everyday wear, but in our neighborhood everybody wears shalwar kameez on a regular basis so everything gets used at get-togethers, bbq parties, Eid, dawats and stuff like that!
actually these numbers are a norm here i was surprised that people only got like 10-12 and i know this may sound ridiculous to some people.
It really depends on the lifestyle one has… if someone doesnt wear shalwar kameez at home, or they go on very few places where shalwar kameez will be necessary, then they dont get more made.. Or if they know they go to pak often, they want to get hte newest nicest styles made everytime they go without guilt
i wonder abt those people who got like 30-50-100 joray how long those clothes actually last them and if they ever get a chance to wear it… ![]()

Re: Number of dresses for wedding

It's not just about status, fazeelat. There are different reasons people get the amount that they do. It's not fair to make judgements based on this little bit of informations.

No. Non-Indians wear saris too. They are lovely.
Re: Number of dresses for wedding
^ yes i agree that v cant say anything abt status only from the dresses, but in pakistan mostly ppl do that.

Duh. That's not my point. Non-indians wear saris too but they don't tend to have 7 - 10 saris hanging in their closets. I have 2! lol..
Re: Number of dresses for wedding
^ Saris are very popular in my family :D To be fair, my FIL grew up in Bombay, and he loves them. But my mom also got me several.

Yes, that is unfortunate. That's why I hesitated posting and I'm hoping that this thread does not degenerate.

Ahhh yes. The bombay thing explains it. Although I do love saris, I would only wear one on a special occasion....close wedding etc.
So your in-laws are indian? And where are u from?

only my FIL grew up in India. MIL grew up in Pakistan as did my own parents. I grew up in the US :D

Thats so sweet that your FIL had such input in your dresses. aww
was your's a love marriage? :D
Re: Number of dresses for wedding
^ A little of both. FIL didn't have a lot of input for clothes, but he always says that he feels women look best in saris. My MIL wears them often -- she has all sorts -- casual and formal. So she has a selection for any occasion.
I still haven't actually tried tying one on my own. With mom and MIL so close by, I've been spoilt :D.
