Back in the early-to-mid 80s, I recall my parents putting us kids to bed early at night so that they could watch Indian movies on video in peace and quiet. Hehehe. I recall some wonderful tunes from the 80s that I have fallen in love with over the years. Here are a few…
Salam-e-ishq
Mere naseeb mein
Mein to beghar hoon
Hai hai yeh majboori
Angrezi mein kehte hain
Jawani janeman
Larki pasand ki
Teri meri dosti
Yeh vada raha
Tere chehre se nazar
Ek rasta hai zindagi
Agar tum na hote
Aaj imtihaan hai
Teri rab ne bana di jori
Athra baras ki tu
O meri mehbooba
great songs in that list but here are the ones that i really like....
jaane jaan
neele neele amber
nahin nahin abhi nahin
koi sheri babu
kaliyon ka chaman
mere naseeb mein
yeh mera dil
yeh sama sama hai
kiss ko pyar karoon
deewana muhjsa nahin
har dil jo pyar karega
chura liya hai tumne jo
khilte hain gul yahan
chingari koi dharke
yeh jo chilmil hai
kanchi re kanchi
pardesiyon se na
zindagi pyar ka geet
Songs these days are just really bad. They don't even "dance" anymore. I don't call jumping up and down doing aerobic types of movement dancing. Khair, the songs usually suck anyway.
The golden era for Hindi and Paki movies was in 70s. 80s sucks big time, except these handful songs from very early 80s. Late 80s was the worst ever period Silver screen has ever seen in sub-continent. I feel like puke at those tacky stuff and ghatiyaa bappi lehri music. The music came back in 90s courtesy of Nadeem-Shravan duo, who gave us one after another hit like Aashiqui, Sajan and Dil Hai ke Manta nahi and the list goes on and on. However I agree today's music sucks big time, one or two memorable songs are made each year.
That's true, Mehnaz. I laugh out loud ever time I see dance moves in today's Hindi films and my friends and I joke that as the actors are probably rehearsing choreographed aerobic moves (for all intents and purposes) behind the scenes, they must be getting a great workout. :D
I agree completely, smooth_guy. The 70s and early-to-mid 80s were a great decade for music and the revival of good music until the mid-90s by duos like Nadeem-Shravan with lyrics by the likes of Faiz Anwar, Nida Fazli, Sameer, and Javed Akhtar did the Hindi film music scene some much-needed justice. Nowadays, we're back to crappy music once more. I've noticed by the way that almost all good lyricists tend to be muslim...any particular reason for that? :) The only thing worthwhile these days are catchy bhangra numbers here and there, but even the originality of these tunes is fast dwindling, unfortunately. Hindi tunes tend to be stolen from Pakistani originals most of the time, as I have noticed.
By the way, smooth_guy, speaking specifically of the 70s, I also like this number a lot..."Yama yama yama yama yeh khubsurat sama, bas aaj ki raat hai zindagi, kal hum kahan tum kahan."

Mehnaz, in my opinion, compared to today the 80s were a good decade for Hindi films as well as some great music.
Jawad, nice list. 'Zindagi pyar ga geet hai' is a wonderful song also, as you listed. I know the film stars Padmini Kohlapuri but which film is it?

its from movie Sautan (not sure if i spelled it correctly). :)

It isn't just the guys jumping up and down like monkeys ... the girls do it too. In fact, I've seen a few dance numbers where it looks like they are having seizures. They also conveniently leave their clothes at home for added effect, and no doubt, added jiggle.
You girls think this is bad? You need to be shut in a theatre and shown jeetendar songs and dances back to back. That should make you cherish the movies of today.
If you guys think Jeetendra and Mithun were bad, then I must insert that the likes of Govinda, Sunny Deol, and Sanjay Dutt have no clue what dancing is whatsoever. Gosh, it seems that they even have trouble with easy monkey steps. Talk about having two left feet!
Remember Mithun copied Thriller's video in one of his movies...:D this jackass should be shot
I liked songs from these movies
Sate-pe-sata = Dilbur meray kub tuk mujhay aisay hi taRpao gay
Jo jeeta wohi sikander = Chahay tum kuch na kaho mein nay sun lya
unknown = ik chuma mein lainay aya aik chuma mein dainay

Qayamat, yes! Ay mere hamsafar, ek zara intezaar.
Neele neele amber
Inteha ho gayi intezar ki
Jaane ja dhoodta hi raha
I don't know which era this movie Julie is from, but the songs are still fresh today, especially the remixes. Juleeeee, I love you. My heart is beating...etc.
