Even if it falls short, its still a nuclear test and North Korea has shown that it has the capability to enrich uranium and make more nuclear weapons.
this means the nuclearization of the far east and a long drawn out stand off between the japan, south korea and usa and north korea

Seems like the U.S trying to belittle the nuclear explosion by saying that it was not a nuclear explosion. If the rest of the world knows that it was a nuclear explosion, then there is no reason for the U.S to not know. It seems that it is playing a propoganda game.
Nobody is in any position to do anything about a nuclear N.Korea, unless they want to suffer huge losses. After a while everyone will accept the reality.

On NPR today they said that Bush administration is preparing/working on sanctions proposal at UN against NK as result of noocleaaar testing..... so which is it that US really believes? NK did the nooocleaaar testing and US is proposing sanctions.... or NK testing was dud and US is not proceeding with sanctions..... pick ur answer.

The blast was 25 to 50 times weaker than the blast caused by Pakistan's test hence the lingering question if this was a nuclear test, yet at the same time North Korea is insisting that it was so the U.S. and the world should react like it was.
Russia is certain it was a nuke test others like the U.S. and France aren't so sure it was(or if it was totally successful test). What I've read is that scientists will be able to determine if was nuclear within the next few days.
Meanwhile North Korea has threaten to launch nuclear missiles if the U.S. doesn't sit down for 1 on1 talks. Such blackmail should be frowned upon by all.

I choose both.
It is clear that NK is agressively pursuing a nuclear weapons program and is damn proud of it, crowing to the world. Thus sanctions are appropriate.
This test may have failed, it certainly leaves questions. That does not mean the next one will fail. In the mean time portraying the North Koreans as inept and marginally competant presses the question, just how much prestige and power will this program gain them? That is a valuable question for them to be asking themselves. The fact that NK cannot replicate what is essentially 1940's technology can cause them to lose a bit of face, a concept that is valuable in dealing with the 6 party talks.
This test may have a silver lining.

With a nuke now they have guaranteed their own safety from bullies like USA and Britain. Sure they will be cold and desperate but atleast they’ll be alive. Ask any number of the hundreds of thousands of dead iraqi civilians who have been killed by an unjustified invasion. No wait.. you cant ask them.. theyre dead!

No, the answer is that someone needs to be consistent and not-liar. Either you support totalitarian regimes or you don't. But wait thats not what you care about, you care about YOUR interests, correct? Similarly other countries care about their interests. Iran and NK are worried about unjustified invasions hence they are seeking deterrents. We "the Muslims" want someone to be straight and fair but I guess its too much to ask of some countries.

If US didn't support totalitarian regimes, Pakistan would still be under sanctions and the US wouldn't have relations with any of the 50+ non-democratic Muslim nations.

fact is everyone is looking after their own interests, be it power or oil supply or whatever. some use religion or some threat to religion or way of life as an excuse to cling to power and divert public's attention ot some outside bogeyman, some use terror and spreading deomcracy and liberating women from burqas as an excuse to march towards their political interests and ambitions.
I mean wouldn't it be so much easier (although less palatable by the masses) if ppl just said the truth straight up rather than hoodwinking public..unless the powers that be beieve that their propoganda is actually the truth, in which case the world collectively is in bigger trouble than we may think it is in.

Vietnam, Panama, Afghanistan, Iraq and many more that no one ever hears about.. and now they have Syria and Libya on their lists. You really think americans would have invaded if iraq had WMD's? You bet your ass they wouldnt.
Given the americans' trigger happy behaviour it is in everyone's best interests to arm themselves. A country that has a history of interefering with the whole world's affairs and is known to be a champion of pre-emptive strkes should not be allowed to carry 25,000 nuclear warheads. If such an unstable country does, then so should everyone else.
