North Indians vs. South Indians

North Indians more business minded and cunning. more fashionable.

South Indians much more book smart. nerdy. dress badly. more conservative religiously and culturally and more moral.

generalizations.

debate these and talk about if u have had any experiences with this discussion, being stereotyped, and anything else.

hindi language debate too.

it should be put in cultural section but I can bet that ur from South India :) and not fashionable at all..

I've noticed similiar traits. North Indians are more personable and have a lot better people skills than South Indians. Dehli and surrounding area culture also seems to be very similiar to most of Pakistani culture. I've many North Indian friends and you can't tell the difference if they are Lahori or not. So among bunch Pakistani, North Indian, and South Indian guys you can tell South Indians are different.

I don't think it's a bad stereotype. It seems quite distinct and generally valid. Even many of my North Indian friends have made the same point.

Vivek...are you from Darjeeling? Because you write like a tea bag. Not to stereotype or anything.

In our University there is a big South Indian vs North Indian thing going on, which resulted in so many fights... The North Indians are much more closer to the Pakistani society, whereas the South Indians, whom they refer to as 'Ilaz' or 'Shuklaz' are left alone.

Talking about Darjeeling, I spent more than 10 years there...

Anywayz...being a well-groomed North Indian that I am.... I have noticed that South Indians do not use deodorant that much :) and would probably spell the word "minimum" as "Yum Eye Yen Eye Yum You Yum".
Plus, they would pursue all lawlful means to go and remain abroad. It also seems to me (based on facts and statistics) that South Indians do not pursue careers in the defence establishment(eg. the armed forces) as much as the North Indians but I must add that I do not think that this is due to lack in patriotism or loyalty to the nation.

Having said all that I am of the firm belief that South Indians are much more disciplined, law-abiding, sincere and generally more academically inclined than North Indians.
That is why you have educated and forward thinking leaders like Naidu and SM Krishna in the South while the North has such dumbos as the Laloos and the Mayawatis.

(Also, having watched South Indian movies , I am inclined to believe two things - South Indians seem to have more libido than North Indians and that any mota/chota/taklaa can be a South Indian lead hero)

south indians are very cultured and educated, generally speaking. they make good friends and are very family-oriented.

as for food clothes and culture, i think i tend more towards north india.

i think tamil sounds really harsh to the ear.

haha Spock!! we call the south Indian "ILLAz" too!!! :D

North Indians are more like Pakistanis probably because North Indians are Aryans, as are most Pakistanis. South indians are Dravidians.
both races have their respective qualities. North Indians are more verstaile, better looking etc. Southerners are somewhat more intelligent and loyal etc. A few years ago the litercay rate in Kerala was 100% i wonder if it's still the same or not? any indians know anyhting about it...?

I thought that was our trademark!

Do South Indians tend towards vegetarianism more or is it only the one's I know. Which admittedly isn't many. There doesn't seem to be many South Indians in the fim industry which seems to suggest a bias.

just compare south and northindia/pakistan in terms of infant mortality
bride burning communal riots and illitracy there is something wrong
with aryan culture.

northies used to say ' a southie will make a good employee but make him the boss and you can kiss your promotion goodbye, cause he'll surround himself only with tamil speakers'.

Northies are more democratic. They'll go for calibre over race. The southies have a resentment against hindi speakers and especially loud, overdressed, snobbish hindi speakers from Delhi.

I love Bangalore for the peaceful and gentle traits of the people. But when we wanted to become members of a colonial style club it was rough going. Being a northie meant automatic disqualification for 9 out of 10. And even inside the club you can see that the traditional southies look down on our kind.

But I've also met some very southies and you can't tell them apart from northies. Most of them are andhra-ites.

Cat woman - are you from north, south or Bombay, the middle kingdom?;)

can you compare social progress of up/bihar with south?
only state that achieved 100% literacy in south asia is kerela

i find northies more fond of grandeur and pomp, whereas southies generally lead a more quiet n simple lifestyle.

northies are more democratic, adaptable n outgoing, whereas southies tend to stick to their own kind … i remember back in school i had a malayali friend… we’d chat in english, but as soon as another mallu showed up, they’d start :bukbuk: in their own tongue… how rude:o
but maybe that difference arises because there are more dialects in the south… north mein tau everyone just speaks hinglish..

overall, i like the Maharashtrian culture best: they’re very easy-going people, well read and educated, they’re also a very enterprising people, are quite good looking, and they strive to keep a balance between adapting and preserving their cultural values :k:

Phoenix u a Marathi Mulgee?

:k: i agree
are you a Maharashtrian???

Re: North Indians vs. South Indians

I think North and South Indians are like two sides of the same coin...
Both have their shortcomings... but, the coin is worth its while only if it has both the sides intact... :D

Personally though, I prefer being with South Indians or West Indians

From my personal observation in last few years of contacts with Indians I think its somewhat comparable to East and West Pakistanis before separation in 1971. Northern are more recepient to western influence like East wing (present Paksitan) , more dominant in politics , army and management. They are more social and like glamor and fashions. They are against Pakistanis except sikhs.

South like bengalis are more educated and a lot more adherent ro culture particularly a lot faithful to their language. They perceive northern as foreigners and are happy in anything that doesnt concern them to do anything with northerns. They take Paksitanis as a mystry as they dont had much exposure to Pakistanis. Most of the experience they had was trickled down from North.

Interestingly I have seen students from south from different religions like hindusium and muslims living together with great ease. Even families in our apartment complex from Kerala are so close and are hindus and muslims. In north there is a vast gulf between hindus and muslims. May be lack of education leads to other extra curricular activities (like we have in Pakistan).

I have most friends who are hindus from Hyderabad which comes in the middle of the two. They are inclined in some traits towards north like foods. They are from south but dont like keralites and madrases. Hindus and muslims dont go as well together as in further south. Their feelings towards Pakiistanis is mixed.

I dont think Maharashtrians are enterprising. Gujaratis are enterprising. Maharashtrians are mostly in fields of art, literature and professionals. I would say they are niether North Indians or South Indian. Their food is mixture of North and South Indian. Culturally they are South Indian, language wise North Indian, food wise mix.

Most Maharashtrians from Bombay are cool because Bombay is a cosmopolitan city. Any experience with Non-Bombay Maharashtrians?

Are there any Marathi speaking people in Pakistan?
