Re: No Shalwar Kameez!
I was watching a talk show on sama channel. Dr. Shaista was the guest. One of the callers complained that TV anchors need to be careful about their dressing and should not wear behooda dresses with half nude legs and all. Dr. Shaista took offense to that and said "it's my personal choice. people shouldn't care about our dressing so much. culture and religion should be kept separate. hamare log abhi tak inhi cheezon mein phanse huay hain. we should not judge people by their dressing because dressing doesn't tell anything about a person".
I for one don't agree with her. Firstly, as muslims our culture is determined by our religion. There are some customs and traditions that we adapt from other races but only if they do not conflict with our religious believes. Secondly, she can do in her personal life whatever she wishes to but when she comes on national television then she has to respect the sentiments of the general population. Otherwise, she would come across as an offender. Thirdly, dressing is an important part of our personality. In our religion, it has been stressed to dress modestly for both men and women.
