Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

Since you are the Culture mod, how did this come about? Maybe we can have a separate thread? :hmmm:

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

Where is the devious monk we all knew back when I was a newbie :(

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

still there :D

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

Personally I speak more Urdu than Punjabi. Punjabi was with friend mostly or when I am out in Pakistan, though most of my family speaks Punjabi and I speak Urdu to sibs/cousins. Used to it since I was a child :hehe:

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

I think the rigidity to follow the Arabic attire as prevail in Indo-Pak to prove your Muslim identity is not prevalent in any other Muslim country. Even Arab country like Egypt owned and cherished their civilization and culture. Iranis never get inspired of Arabic culture. I had produced a very rude line by famous Persian poet Firdosi in another thread. Look at Malaysia, look at Indonesia. Don’t go that far, just look at Bengalis, they don’t feel degraded to speak their language and follow their culture, because they don’t feel themselves lesser Muslims without Arabic language and attire.

As far as Afghanistan is concerned their Pashtunwali customs are more prevalent than Islamic sharia. These shuttle burqa is their local culture.

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

Bin/Bint is perfectly urdu, just like many other words taken from several different languages.

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

living in an arab country for several years, i've personally never sported arab attire, but have a question. this is off topic but many people have discussed it here and its related to those posts.

do we equally object on Pakistanis putting on western attire as much we do when they don arab dresses? i myself included, in Paksitan or abroad wear western cloths almost 50% of time outside of office and use English words often, even when speaking in Urdu.

why this discrimination? why adopting western culture is OK and Arab culture is not OK? why abhor those who choose arab dress sometimes while they wear western dress most of the time?
don't tell me because arabs hate us, because that is lame, westerners hate us too.

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

I think the problem is we don’t own our own culture and languages. People keep on blaming others cultures being followed as you gave example and raised query about Arav Vs west. similar views and questions are raised from other party.

To be specific this anti western lobby remained active earlier than anti Arab lobby. example: masjid main jeanz pehn ke kiyun aae?

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

pardon my ignorance, but please enlighten me with Arab cultural influence in Pakistan? Abaya and beard do not qualify their source of inspiration is religion not Arab culture.

you don’t see Pakistanis wearing Arab thob/kandoora in Pakistan other than some religious leaders or common men religious events (quite less than even 1%) on the other hand you see people wearing western dresses even at home you see some even in village (some of them, however are due to other reasons - cost for example)

you don’t people listening or humming Arab music, while almost every other person in cities or men/women who attend college/universities enjoyed English/ western music

you don’t listen people watching Arab movies, while English movies are quite common

we don’t see anyone celebrating Arab Cultural festivals in Pakistan while April’s Fool makes it to news, St. Valentines Day has reached to a level that it triggers debate of its economical contribution

so plz tell me, what this fuss is all about?

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

now on topic...

the author refers a group of people in his article
...faith inspired Punjabi Muslim ideologues...
who are these people? what did they say? I don't see author referring to any literary work or speech or any other article where these faith inspired punjabi muslim ideologues objected on speaking punjabi. Did i miss something? or is it only me who feels that the writer made up a situation and went on bashing anyone he doesn't like?

We are punjabi family. I grew up and lived most of my life in Karachi. If I don't speak punjabi its not because i'm a faith inspired ideologue, its because i just never had any need to speak punjabi. My friends who speak punjabi, don't do so because they are not religious some of them are more religious than i am.

In this Article author argues that they want to leave their language because now they have turned muslim. gives example of Arab and Persians who didn't leave their language after embracing The Faith. well again, question is same who advocates leaving behind Punjabi language after you turned muslim? its again a made up situation by the author.

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

I personally speak more Hindi than anyother language

Same here

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

Arab Culture domination comes through religion, which most of the time objects over local culture. terming local festivals, customs biddat, etc Like terming Basant Hinduwana. Its more about restrictions on local things than introducing their own.

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

I did mentioned this in post 22. But there are some points whereby certain scholars who believe use of Punjabi redundant in presence of Urdu. google Fateh Muhammad Malik or just go through this one:

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

are you kidding?
Its ok to wear pant instead of shalwar qameez because its universal?
and it does not take your cultural values?

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

and the culture you are talking about comes through hindu religion.

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

No it comes through land , harvest, of our region. There is nothing like formal Hindu religion and therefore it got power of flexibility.

Re: No Punjabi please! We are Muslim Punjabis

But I disagree.
Not everyone follow land culture like religion. on the other hand, people are near to different cultures, like, sindhi to hindu, pathan to afghan and so on. People can follow whatever they like.
