Re: No Namaz for Transexual
From a Sunni perspective, I think the mosque authorities were correct. No sunni scholar allows gender changing operations with the very small exception of being for the purposes of resolving the gender of the extremely small number of people born with both male and female sexual organs.
In other words, sunni scholars do not accept that someone who is born as being physically female can be changed into a man for religious purposes.
From the sound of the story this, this woman tried to pray amongst men, whereas Islam teaches that when women pray with men they should pray behind men. Given that congregational Eid prayer is an obligation only for men, and is optional for women, the mosque should not have to provide facilities for women should it choose to expend its resources on facilities for those who are obligated by God to use them (ie men).
It is also accepted in Islam that prayer is not valid unless done exactly as laid down in the sunnah. Therefore women's prayers are not valid if done whilst sitting amongst men; therefore Rehana Firdous, regardless of what name she chooses, cannot do her Eid prayers at the mosque if no facilities exist for her to pray behind the men.
The crux of the matter is that whilst secular law allows for the changing of gender, divine law does not. Rehana Firdous is still genetically female; she is still female in God's eyes (though not in the context of Indian law) ; and so Rehana Firdous cannot be treated any differently to other women for religious purposes.
so what are his/her option. Can we attend Namaz with women? ;) Will Mullah's and sister's allow it?
