No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Saturday announced that under its new strict security protocol, a restriction on the entry of more than one person will be enforced at airports across the country.

“For this purpose, we need everyone’s support. We want the public to realise that this is being done for their own safety,” the CAA spokesperson said. “The security measures will be strictly enforced by the Airport Security Force (ASF).”

For hundreds of thousands of emigrants, expats, their families and friends, Pakistani airports have offered fond experiences. Every time someone arrived from abroad, several relatives and loved ones would be waiting at the arrival gate to receive the person.
At times, scenes witnessed at the airports are amusing. Dozens of family members, cramped in hired buses and Suzuki vans, would come to the airport, bringing garlands, rose petals and even party poppers.

Even the way people lined up along barriers right in front of the glass gates of arrival and departure sections is memorable. The wait could start three hours before the flight.

“This is something specific to our Pakistani culture,” says Sabeen Hasan, a banker who travels frequently on official trips. “But the government knows better. Security has become a big issue these days. You never know who can sneak in with a bomb or a weapon.”

The airports, especially Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, have also been sort of entertainment spot for many years. Through the 1980s and 1990s, people came along with families just to see planes take off. A terrace specifically built for this purpose, where one could go after paying a small fee, was open for public till a few days back.

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

I think its a good initiative. Why brings the whole village with you to see-off or receive you. I've seen Mir Puris in filled Toyota Hi-Aces to receive the sole passenger.

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

this is more or less the same scenario at Indian airports and railway stations [not bus terminals for whatever reason]...

...actually, at Aligarh Muslim University, it is a tradition among students to see off friends and classmates at train station. we used to frequent the station for hours every day 3-5 days ahead of the vacations. the charm was the treat we got from the departing students. we used to get a piece of cake and a cup of tea before 9 pm and after 9 pm a boiled egg was added to the menu...wow...at the end of the day, we would have a dozen 'free' cuppa teas. we used to return to our residences after the last train of the day left at 1:30 am.

i miss that...:(

yes, it's a good move. there is no need for 10 people to come to see one relative/friend off.

at Delhi airport, they have a visitor lounge where relatives and friends of the arriving/departing passengers gather to receive or send them off. there is an entrance fee of Rs. 100 that visitors have to pay.

non passengers are not allowed in the terminal and even passengers can't enter the terminal before three hours of their departure time.

No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

As it's said you do wut u gotta do. Safety first . I know it'll be wierd next time I visit PK to see only one person come to greet but that's fine. We can live with it

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

i think it will cause a great deal of inconvenience for arriving and departing seniors who get help from relatives in carrying their luggage and finding a transport.

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

Normally seniors don't travel alone. But even if they do, then there are always porters inside the airport who can carry luggage. At least in Islamabad airport they have taxi stand right in front of arrival lounge. The taxis there have special clearance of the authorities to park there. So it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

i know but still elders are slow walkers and they do not trust the porters. taxi people are more harassers than helpers. a family member is indeed soothing for seniors to have them alongside.

anyways, i will go for increased security! better be a bit inconvenienced than be sorry!

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

Good move. However, this sounds like double sawaari pe paabandi sort of tactic. From what i know, airports weren't breached from the 'family good bye' areas.

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

Kuch to karna tha, chaahay problem general public ko ho aur chahay iss say koi faida ho ya na ho. :hoonh:

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

Yeah, I think they do this at Dhaka Airport and I remember similar when I was leaving Vietnam a few years back as well..

I actually think it's a good idea.. Used to be a million people milling around inside the terminal and not the safest atmosphere..

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

trust me its for only few citizens , the VIP parking will still be full of families.

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

As the situation in Karachi has gotten more violent over the years, people in my family have stopped doing this anyway on their own. Especially for flights that arrive in the middle of the night. It’s just not that safe. But this is going to another extreme. There should at least be 2 people allowed so if one is parking the other can be there to help with the bags etc. But yeah, those were fun times when the whole caravan used to go to receive someone, especially when they came to visit after a long time (and were bringing faaraign chaaclaites) #goodtimes](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=goodtimes)

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

What sad times these are. I remember way back in the day, just for 1 person’s arrival 3 families would go to the airport. It’s kinda heartbreaking to see only 3 people come to the airport these days :naak: Besides 1 gari isn’t enough anymore. You need 2. One for the luggage, and one for the passengers.

In all seriousness, how will they reinforce this? Like look into every car that’s arriving at the gates of the airport?

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

How about charging people, and then using those funds to beef up security and surveillance? Does entry into Airport imply from street, or from the parking lot to the actual building? As some have already said, it would be very inconvenient if people aren't allowed access to the airport parameters altogether. There has to be a better way. Maybe limit how close to the Passenger-Only areas others can go.

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

I think they already charge you at Lahore Airport. Or that might be an older thing, I don't remember/notice it anymore. Plus they charge for the coolie-service (can't remember the other name for it).

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

.

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

They were charging at Islamabad Airport already. The passengers with tickets were free, all other persons had to pay Rs. 20/person.

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

^ the entry fee must be hiked to over Rs. 100 in order to keep majority of people away. in India, visitors pay Rs. 100 as well and they are not allowed to enter the terminal building. they have access to the visitor lounge where arriving and departing passengers get to be received and waved good bye by their loved ones.

Re: No more family goodbye, see-off at Pakistani Airports

Ridiculous is what this is. Like Mr Right said, the airport was not breached from the "family good bye area". What's next? Stop getting out of your houses, it's for your own security.

It's just like those cell phone outages on major holidays. Stupid and pointless.
