No Air conditioning in New York

From what I understand, New York city does not have centralized air conditioning system. I know some people install window units in their house. But most of the people I know DO NOT have any, and only use fans. How do New Yorkers manage to get by in the month of August?

Has anyone moved from a city where they had AC to NY?

If so how did you adjust?

Re: No Air conditioning in New York

I've lived in and around NYC all my life and have always had A/C. Mostly window units but one apartment building I lived in had central air. Every office building I've ever entered had central air. If you're bargain-hunting for rentals, the units without A/C of course will cost much less and its usually not the better areas where the majority of rentals are without it.

Really. I'm not looking for a place, but I have a LOT of family and friends there and NO way has AC.

I guess I am just trying to understand how do they manage living like that in the summer without getting sick... :/

Re: No Air conditioning in New York

^lol your so cute desi_beautii!

haaiiin.. :o .. i don't think so we have FATA/Afghanistan like area's in NY ... i never been to any place in NYC.. building/house ..which don't have AC ..

lol firenze...you will be amazed to find out that there are places just like fata/afghanistan in NYC :p

as mama said, it all about the rent. the more you pay the more you can upgrade your living standard.

Desi_BeauTii, i usually visited NYC during winter so i never get to face this situation...or may be i did visit nyc during my summer vacations once...the way to deal with it is cover yourself up. the more you cover the more you will be protected from heat stroke. use sun block, eat water melon.

my sis whose master's thesis is on climate change, says more people die cuz of heat stroke than of any natural disaster.

If you really believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.

Re: No Air conditioning in New York

I’ve lived in NYC all my life and no one I know doesn’t have an A/C. Its not even a luxury anymore, its a necessity.

The people you know must be either really poor to afford an AC (which is highly unlikely) or just very cheap and dont want to use it.

I have been in homes where it was 80-90 degrees and they wouldn’t turn on the fan or cooling (centralized air) b/c of hte cost

Re: No Air conditioning in New York

First, NY gets summer for so less days that it pass by before we even realise and enjoy too much.. especially the "very hot" days are much lesser, so you can live easily without centralized AC. I mean room ACs are sufficient enough to do the job. Other than that, if you visit HomeDepot, you may find such powerful fans that can be very helpful where ACs are not consumed.
Again, the main heat is usually in day time, nights are beautiful esp if you live in longisland.
You are talking about August, while August has very beautiful weather here. Its just june and july that are hotter.

Re: No Air conditioning in New York

Is this the twilight zone? First the original poster and then My. SID.
Sara summed it up. AC's are relatively inexpensive and with the new units it doesn't use up that much power either. Cheap people are all around us.
As for SID_NY I think you must come to NY during the summer from some hot area so your body is used to the 80-90 degree weather and don't need cooling.

Re: No Air conditioning in New York

Tofy I think the original poster was talking not just about AC, rather centralized AC system. In my all contacts here, noone has centralized one rather they are very satisfied with the room AC. I may have come from whatever the area, but people whom I know neither have centralized unit nor they feel they need of it. YMMV.

no man..she noted that some dont have any and instead use fans..

Re: No Air conditioning in New York

In my experience, out of the three rented apartments we lived in- only one had central air conditioning, the rest we just installed room ACs. In our house that we own, we have central along with room ACs- central is usually used when it's uber hot or when we have loads of guests over in summer- ammi turns on the central along with room ACs to keep the temperature down!

And they're pretty common in NY :)

Re: No Air conditioning in New York

Ok Ya I acknowledge, I misread the third sentence. I thought its only about centralized thingy to which I've already explained my observation/experience.
Thanks X2

Re: No Air conditioning in New York

oh sarkar no problem,

btw I have lived with centralized AC, room AC, desert cooler, fans, haath ka pankha etc. unless its a heat wave you get used to the temps. I recall when i visited Pakistan, the first day I would not even come out of the ac, and in a week would be all over the city in jeans.

haha what are you talking about???

That’s what I thought. I was surprised when I went to stay with a friend and found out she had no AC. She only used fan, and they werent that strong. All we did that weekend was sweat. Even if it is strong a fan is only going to circulate hot air.

Thanks for the tips. But im telling you it was really bad. As soon as I got out of the shower the heat dried the water off of me, and I started sweating. I usually sleep in on vacations and my days off. I will sleep anywhere from 10am - 1am depending on went time I went to bed. But, while i was there I was unable to get enough sleep because it was literally to hot to even sleep. My pillow was drenched. I woke up at like 8am… which I have almost NEVER done other than for work or appointments. :frowning:

What do you mean?

Sara im amazed. Out of all the people I know in NY, only one family has AC, and they live upstate.

Well these people do not have powerful fans. Im telling you the enitre house is greasy cuz its so hott. I had to put my make up in the fridge so that it wouldnt melt.

Yes I agree. But i have to go throughout the summer. The friend I stayed with thinks that AC is a luxury and only spoiled people have it, and she forgot to mention that she didn’t have AC when I came to stay with her last August. I found out when I got to her apartment and she said I will turn the fan on. At first I thought she was just being cheap and trying to save electricity, because I have NEVER heard of ANYONE not having AC. Also the weather in NY is just as hott and humid as DC is.

The people I know dont even have room ACs. The use fans. A fan is only going to circulate hott air. It is not going to produce cold air.

Yes you are right.

Your lucky.

I stayed in NY for about two days. Im telling you I cannot handle it.

Everyone was sweating. The carpet was greasy, literally, the carpet was blue and pieces of it were sticking to the bottom of my foot, my entire foot was blue. I was literally dripping in sweat, my clothes were drenched. I was even sweating while taking a shower. This is unhealthy.

Overall it is unhealthy to live an envoirment such as this. I even thought about bringing my space heater/cooler next time I go. But I was told that if i do that people are going to say “bare nakhre hain”. Maybe im just one of those people that sweats more than normal, or my body cant handle heat the way the average person can. I know some people that like to sweat, but I will literally faint, if I dont faint, I get sinus headaches, and literally my body will start to shut down, if I drink water it just prevents my body from shutting down, it doesn’t get ready of the dizziness, headache, and fatigue. Is that really nakhre? Or is them refusing to get AC/window unit AC nakhre??

I cant handle heat, but I can handle cold. I dont even really need heat in the winter. I wonder how those people would feel if I invite them to my house for three days and refuse to put the heat on.

This entire situation just boggles my mind…

Re: No Air conditioning in New York

I think your friend was being really cheap.....no its not nakhray...its a necessity...

Invite those people over during the winter, and see how they're freezing just cz u don't feel it.

next time, just stay in a hotel.
