When a woman is having her period, she is not supposed to do ANYTHING of significance, in fact, it's best that she stays in the attached two car garage for the entirety of her period because during her period, she is filthy and not even human. She must not enter the house, she must not enter your car(s), she must not talk to you or even look at you. If she tries, you must beat her with a stick. Once the period is over, things are back to normal.

I know in some parts of India, women are not allowed to cook or enter the kitchen during that time of the month as she is unclean.

Ok wait for it, what ive heard, dont know of it being true so you'll have to tell me, is, if you dont consummate the mariage within a certain amount of time, the nikah is broken

welllll ... hmm.. what does a girl do to ensure that she doesnt have her period on her wedding day.... i mean even if the nikkah is valid.. i dont think the husband is looking forward to that...... no?
soo.. what is a safe thing to do to ensure a woman can just either change her cycle dates or hold off her period for teh wedding and honeymoon?

But if you think ull be very very very uncomfortable the whole time, i've heard that doing something with the pill can make u skip ur period that month.. (erbest idea is to ask doc)

That is why, in our culture, date of wedding has been set by girl's family. there is a reason behind that tradition

Sometimes its not totally possible, as the date set by them won't be convenient... and then its a pesky thing called hormones and stress that can screw up the cycle.. :D

BTW, another misconception ... Valima is not a celebration of mating... One can have valima without touching his spouse
so in case of uncalled for cycles ... guys can wait (like they have any other choice :D)

^ So how did that thinking come about? I always thought it was just a reception hosted by the guys family, and had nothing to do with the physical relationship.

I think because valima happens after rukhsati and not after nikah (as Nikah and rukhsati can be years apart), so people probably started thinking that it has something to do with husband/wife being together together (if you know what I mean :D)
