Nihari pairings

I need to make nihari , what are some other things that would compliment nihari and not take away from it.

Dry maash ki daal
Mix vegetables

I’ve served it with chicken pilao/mattar pilao…it’s got a rather mild flavor. I’ve also served it alongside maash ki daal. That’s abt it…usually if we have nihari…it’s a stand alone dish. Or grilled kebabs. Not a variety of them…just grilled tandoori chicken or seekh kabab. One or the other.

Just dont have any other meat salan/gravy. Dryer items i think would go better.

Re: Nihari pairings

I have always felt that dishes like nihari (and haleem, sindhi biryani etc) do not need a lot of other things to be present.
But if I was making nihari for guests or a party,I would have naan with that. And maybe some vegetarian item to be eaten with naan too, like chana masala.
I would also make rice like matar/chana/veggie pulao and add a dry item like kababs with it.And ofcourse the usual salad and raita too.

payaa

Re: Nihari pairings

Nihar & Paya - perfect combination for blocked blood vessels!

Hahaha Mostar

As odd as it sounds Channa Pulao goes really well with Nehari.

Re: Nihari pairings

Simple: Just tomatoes as a salad gives Nihari a very very good taste. For side you can make mash ki daal or dhahi phulki!

Re: Nihari pairings

Why’d you need anything to compliment it?

I made it yesterday and just loads of dhania, mirchain and nimboo. with some tandoori naans and omg best thing ever!!

Re: Nihari pairings

@Mostar…I LOVE tomatoes. A salad is so incomplete without them. But tomatoes alone are enough for me.

Agree with Hadeel. If you’re making nihari for a dawat, you’ll need other dishes. But if it’s just for your own family, nihari itself is sufficient. Alls you need is naan…or sheermal…a chutney…some lemon wedges. I love squirting lemon on nihari and haleem.

Re: Nihari pairings

I think you mean “to block blood vessels”

I’m surprised at the number of people that have suggested a rice dish to go with Nihari.
Would you be putting the Nihari on the rice??
In my family, if you did that you would hear a deathly silence and then a collective “GASP!”

muzna… my nihari was raped in such a way recently, at a dawat. i DID gasp alongwith my fil… and then he dissed the person until they knew that a great dish has been insulted and abused.

if quantity if dishes is an issue… dont make nihari. cuz nothing goes with nihari cept paye. and thats just more work. :d

Re: Nihari pairings

I can’t think of a more appropriate term than “rape”.

Lol. Plain boiled Basmati rice with Nehari taste really good too. I remember the first time my Ami asked me to try the combo & how insulting it sounded. It took some getting used to but it does taste really good.

If we ever have a lot of Nehari left over from some dawat, I always make Channay ka Pulao to finish it off. Sounds peculiar but it’s a yummy combo.

Yeah topping Biryani or Meat Pulao With Nehari is an insult to both, Nehari & the rice dish.

Re: Nihari pairings

If we’re serving Nihari at a dawat/dinner party, it’s done one of two ways…either solo as the only main course along with fresh tandoori naan and salad, preceded by more substantial appetizers **or **as a part of larger multi dish menu where the nihari is served completely separate at it’s own station, with it’s own separate bowls, garnishes and naan so that people can help themselves to nihari…and then go back with a fresh and separate plate for the rest of the dinner. This is usually only done at a large Eid party, or other special occasion.

I can’t really think of anything else that goes with nihari, it’s such a complete, stand alone dish. :hmmm:

Re: Nihari pairings

If nihari is being made for a dawat, and there is a rice dish there too, doesn’t necessarily mean that people will pour the nihari on top of the rice and eat it (and that IMO is an insult to nihari…:D).Maybe they will help themselves to a serving of naan and nihari and then some rice with salad/raita/whatever else is being served.

Re: Nihari pairings

I agree Nihari is a standalone dis, however people have started incorporating it into a larger dinner party menu as just another curr.,I don’t think this does the Nihari justice, but I think the ease of cooking it using packet spices has made it easier to make as just another add on dish. My last Nihari party, served a simply flavoured roast chicken and salad as a starter, with sald and the just served Nihari with tandoori naan. I prob wouldn’t even have bothered with the chicken if we didn’t have kids coming.

Re: Nihari pairings

And how you guys cook your nihari?

Here’s the way it is cooked since its birth in 17th century - may be healthy at that time when there was enormous physical activities - but not in this era …
