Out of curiosity, is there really no way out of the friendship circle once you're in it?

women are different to men (nothing new there :D )
im not sure if its true for all women, but when u cross the barrier u become a brother, not by blood ofcourse but its not the same thing anymore, ure not just any other guy
instead of looking at u as a potential the female friend will actually try to find YOU a potential
alot of ppl find it hard to break the mold, and im not kidding, but i think the most important thing to keep in mind is that if the friendship was a really good one, is it worth risking it for something that might never happen? (guys take a note of that)
Hmmm... interesting. Back in my younger, less conservative and more impetuous days, I crossed that barrier into the circle of death...errr.... friendship once. Never found a way out... but later became glad I didn't .

They can be exceedingly dangerous at times

It also depends. Most of my friends are big fans of the friends first and then lets date idea.
Only me and a russian friend of mine hate that. You friends you stay friends. Dont mess up something that is good. Either you are attracted in the first (max) 2 months and say it. If you dont bugger off there is no chance now.
