NHL - Toronto Maple Leafs

back to back losses to philly had toronto tied for the 1st place standing in the eastern conference...

tonites win against the islanders puts them back in first...

lets see if they can hold up against the canadiens :)

wow…i forgot about updating this thread :smiley: gettin close to play-offs now…another 5 weeks of play :slight_smile:

toronto has experienced some humbling losses…were beaten by the black hawks, sabres, bruins…all the games that i was countin on toronto winnin…trevor kidds performance was really disappointing in all those games…i’m glad toronto brought in Mikael Tellqvist…he has only played 2 games so far, but has shown what he’s made of! i just hope Belfour is back in action by the playoffs…

good news is that they are still clining onto the top spot in the eastern conference, with 80 points in 62 games…

other eastern conference teams:

phili has 80 points in 63 games…
ottawa 79 points in 61 games…ottawa has come back strong as well, as did the boston bruins with 78 points in 62 games…
NJ devils aren’t far behind with 74 points in 60 games…
montreal has its work cut out with 66 points in 62 games, but they are still workin hard, so hats off to them :k:

western conference, no surprise there either:

detroit red wings are on the top with 80 points in 61 games…
colorado has 78 points in 60…
san jose with 74 points in 61…
vancouver with 75 in 62…
calgary has been workin hard as well with 68 points in 60 games…

woops...double post

who’s playing tonite
gO lEaFs gO, :dhimpak:

Toronto team is lookin better than ever to win the play-offs now! here are the updates:

Toronto maple leafs have struggled lately as key players have fought off late-season injuries…Ed Belfour with the back problems and same for Joe Nieuwendyk…Gary Roberts and Bryan Marchment with groin injuries…Mikael Renberg took a hard hit to the head and Wade Belak twisted a knee…

the leafs are now tied with ottawa for a total of 88 points, two points behind phili and three points behind tampa bay in the Eastern Conference

need a healthy team to survive…good news is, belfour is back and in the last 4 games that he has played, toronto has won 3…also, a big :k: for the leafs acquiring veteran center Ron Francis, veteran defenseman Calle Johansson and giant veteran forward Chad Kilger at the trading deadline

so the final line-up for rest of the regular season and playoffs have a couple of future hall-of-famers for sure…

Francis will make the the leafs stronger defnesively and at faceoffs…with a 24-year NHL career, he ranks second only to Wayne Gretzky with his 1,241 assists and is fourth all-time with 1,781 points trailing only Mark Messier among all active NHL players…Francis waived a no-trade clause in his contract to pursue his third Stanley Cup…he won with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1991 and 1992…he can certainly offer the leadership andbetter the team overall, which is much needed by toronto right now…

Leetch gives the Maple Leafs an offensive dimension from the blue line that no other player in the NHL can…he has 985 points in 1,131 NHL games, offensive production that only the most talented of forwards can produce…Leetch had a strong start as he assisted on three power-play goals March 5 in his Toronto debut, leading the Maple Leafs to a 6-2 victory over the New York Islanders at the Air Canada Centre…Acquiring Leetch cost the team defenseman Maxim Kondratiev and forward Jarkko Immonen…worth it though in my opinion…

Calle Johansson has played 1101 career games for Buffalo and Washington collecting 529 points (119 goals, 410 assists) with 519 penalty minutes…he was voted one of the two best defensemen in Capitals’ history by the fans, retired after last season and had been working as a scout for Washington…It was the efforts of Ferguson who coaxed Johansson out of retirement to join the leafs…

Also acquired by the leafs was Chad Kilger off the waiver wire from the Canadiens…Kilger, 27, had two goals and two assists in 36 games…the 6’4 223 pound Kilger provides toronto the much needed size advantage that the team needs, specially come playoff time when they might meet Boston or Phili…

oh also to add in other developments, Todd Bertuzzi, the All-Star forward of the Vancouver Cancuks was suspended indefinitely without pay, after being assessed a Match penalty for deliberate injury of Colorado Avalanche forward Steve Moore causing a neck fracture...Bertuzzi was an All-Star last season when he was fifth in the league in scoring...This year, he was an All-Star again and has 60 points, 23rd in the league...

Bertuzzi's punch appeared to be retaliation for an open-ice hit Moore delivered to Canucks captain Markus Naslund last month, knocking him out for three games...Vancouver players vowed to get even with Moore for that hit, which wasn't penalized...this was definitly an overkill though...

Bertuzzi slugged Moore in the side of the head late in Monday night's 9-2 Colorado victory, hitting Moore from behind and driving his head into the ice...Moore landed face-first with the 245-pound Bertuzzi on top of him, and lay in a pool of blood for several minutes before he was removed on a stretcher...Moore is in a vancouver hospital indefinitly as well...

update: Ron Francis has still to prove himself...leafs are in 4th place now in the eastern conference with the loss last night to Boston Bruins...of the last ten, leafs have won 5 and lost 5...this was the 6th consecutive win for the bruins...

standing are as follows:

Eastern:
Tampa --> 95 points in 73 games
Phili --> 94 points in 74 games
Boston --> 93 points in 73 games
Toronto --> 90 points in 74 games
Ottawa --> 90 points in 73 games
Montreal --> 87 points in 74 games
NJ --> 87 points in 72 games
NY Islanders --> 78 points in 72 games

woops, forgot to add the Western conference results:

Detroit --> 96 points in 72 games
Colorado --> 93 points in 73 games
San Jose --> 88 points in 72 games
Vancouver --> 88 points in 73 games
Dallas --> 85 points in 73 games
Calgary --> 84 points in 73 games
St. Louis --> 80 points in 73 games
Nashville --> 80 points in 73 games

and there was a time when the leafs were 2 in the over all and nomber 1 in the eastern conference i dunno y the team is not playing well they lost against the florida panthers but the best game that i was really happy about was that they beat NJ 3-0 and that was the best game so far i hope they win tonite against philly i have ma fingers crossed :k:

Leafs have 99 points, with 2 more games to go in the regular season...one against the sabres, who have 83 points, and the other against the senators, who have 98 points (and 2 games to go)...

the oilers are also making a run for a playoff spot with 3 regular season games left...if they qualify, this will be the first season after 18 years that all 6 canadian teams have qualified for the play-offs! i surely hope they do...

all other canadian teams have secured themselves a berth in the play-offs...the canadiens have 91 points with 3 regular season games left...

in the west, canucks have 95 points with 3 games left, and the flames have 90 points with 3 games left...

lets see who comes out on top in the play-offs...toronto's team as usual is ridden with injured players...i hope they manage to win the stanley this time around...if not them, i'd say senators are the next best contenders to bring home the stanley cup!

canucks handed a 5 - 2 loss to the oilers, so the oilers are not gonna make it to the playoffs…

toronto won the last 2 games convincingly, both shut-outs by ed belfour…esp the last one against ottawa, a 6 - 0 shut-out victory which puts them on top of the northeast division…

stanley is ours this yr baby! :bhangra:
