Re: new york city and newark trip

Will you be driving? If not then you will need to take train from NJ to NYC...I found it quite time consuming and tiring to travel one city to another...if it is only few days it is better to stay in manhattan becuz most attactions and shopping places are all in NYC.
Beside liberty statue, you can visit Time Square (loved it), Rockefeller, Macy's, Metropolitan museum of Arts, Museum of natural history (MUST SEE).
Shopping at 6th ave from 30th to 50th street. Shopping at Broadway street.

Re: new york city and newark trip

Are you gonna be living by the Newark airport hotels? Then it’s fine, only because you will be renting a car to get around in NJ.

Yes you are right, NY is around that much time with traffic and toll stop. However, driving to New York is not recommended - only because there is a big parking space problem. However, if you are willing to pay high fee for the parking spot - then there is nothing better than having your car!!!

**please note - in general Newark is not one of the safe areas, specially the residential areas. So do not hang out in Newark esp. after dark. Many low income kalu area. I do not want to scare you - because I know you will not be hanging out there - it’s not a tourist area - nothing much to do in Newark…

For NY tour, there is so much to do! They have a tour package that covers the main boroughs. Just Google search NY tours. Here’s one link I found - OnBoard New York City Sightseeing Tours

I am in a rush rt now, but ye just google the NY tour and it gives you all the destination stops and all. That’s one of the best ways to tour. You will cover many places without being lost or thinking what next!

NY is truly a very enegizing city -I love it! Welcome to NY! =)

Re: new york city and newark trip

On the days that you are going to NYC - I highly recomend - don't rent a car. It's holiday season city is packed with tourists. Police won't even let you pull over to take pictures.

From Newark take the train or bus (port authority) right into the city. It will much cheaper for you.

Don't even think of taking a car into the city on New years eve - you will not find parking because roads are blocked and will pay arm and a leg for parking in the garages. If you want to be reallllly up close you need to get there and stay there before 9 p.m other wise you won't be able to see the ball drop. It gets crowded and packed. There are no fireworks in time square just lots of confetti

You will need a car for all Jersey activities - You can take the statue of liberty ferry from liberty state park. On the same day you can do

It is snowing and you will need a winter jacket, gloves, a hat and good shoes because you will be walking ALOT.

Rockafeller center is a must with the trees and the music and the lights. You can do that and time square - they are only a few blocks away.

If you have kids - there is the toys r us at time square,

Enjoy - let me know if you have any questions. The city is so magicial this time of the year.

But do plan wayyy ahead in time other wise you are going to spend time in traffic and distances.

Let me know if you have any questions - where are you coming from BTW?

hi there
oh thnak u very much for the info, yes we rented a car. but seriusly is it really packed. cos i liv in london i am used to traffic now..
comin from london.
yeh got a tomtom gps so that will guide us.
also one more thing, whiuch is the good cinema for bollywood in new jersey?
oh ok, so where can i see the fireworks etc isint it time sq then. um wot do u guys do on new years eve

Re: new york city and newark trip

no we do not have fire works... People gather in Times Square - There is a Big ball drop - a ball that slides down from a tall bldg - in the last 10 seconds and woala! It's happy new year!

(personally I never found the ball drop to be all that. I usually watch the international marathon of the new year celebration - that's more fun...but it's just my opinion ;) )

Re: new york city and newark trip

pls don't go to times sq for new year's... really... unless u want to stand in the freezing cold on one foot surrounded by drunk teenagers/young ppl who are saying and doing weird things. i had some relos visiting me four yrs ago and they insisted on going... and after that experience i was like, never again. the whole ball dropping thing ain't that spectacular, not worth it, imo. there are no fireworks either in times sq. stay warm at home and watch the whole thing on TV. really!! i'd hate to say, i told u so...

nyc is at its best christmas week, so defo go to rockefeller plaza area. apart from that, u have ur usual tourist stops - downtown area, Trinity Church, WTC, wall street bull, battery park, statue of liberty (instead of actually going to liberty island, consider taking the staten island ferry to SI and back - it's free. if u go to liberty island, the statue towers over u, so that u can't get any good pics anyway). then there's the midtown area - times sq, grand central, etc. u might want to go to the top of the empire state bldg. maybe go see chinatown one day. if u're into museums, i really love the Met and the American Museum of Natural History. The Bronx Zoo is awesome, it's the 2nd largest zoo in america (i've been to the san diego zoo which is the largest, and i still prefer Bronx Zoo). there's nothing great abt manhattan bridge, but i love walking the brooklyn bridge in the summer (never walked it in winter). what else... hmm.. i dunno if u wanna chk out Jackson Hts which is the desi area in Queens, lots of desi restos there.

ok there's this fantastic place in brooklyn, Court St. area... there's a pier there from which u can see the entire manhattan skyline. it's the best place from which to click pics of the skyline, esp at night. and they have some nice restos on montague street where u can have dinner..

bollywood movies... you can see them amc/lowes cinemas 20 jersey gardens. Nice theaters stadium seating (that is proabaly the closet to you if you are in newark) and you can also go the mall if you want but it will be packed before Christmas

If you want to be warm on new years - go to a desi club or a party. There are dinner cruises and also TONS of desi parties that play good music with food and apetizers and have live feeds for time square. Tickets are about $50-100 per person with dinner included.

Just like you can get to everything in London via the tube you can do the same in NYC via subways and buses.

You will need a car to get to queens and brooklyn. But what exactly do you want to do in queens and brooklyn?

hi
thanks for ur info.
ok listen cud u possible give me sum details of the desi parties, i wont mind goin there with hubby. we were looking at boat cruise for newa year eve but thats al gora gora. i do want to see fireworks but also want to be warm and dont wana go to a club club sort of thing as i have never been to one. just a nice family atmosphere but watchin fireworks too.
dont know wht we gna do in brooklyn or queens just prob go out for a drive out there, hows the weather now, is it ok, asi seen on news that its snow etc and ppl cant move etc. but i have searched online and the weather seems to be goin ok after friday 26th. i am comin on 26th.

Re: new york city and newark trip

DesiNewYears.com - Powered by: DesiParty.com - you can find most of them here. There are tons in NYC and NJ. The lines to get in NJ are shorter. NYC clubs are cooler.

Sorry dear- I don’t think you are going to find fireworks anywhere in this area just because it’s so cold.

Weather should be okay - just make sure you have boots, hats and gloves. If you are bundled up - you should be fine.

thanks.

ok one thing what is the toll charge, in entering new york from bew jersey. just want a fair idea. how much is the toll. and hav u guys been to washington by car??

Re: new york city and newark trip

Going from NJ to NY - the Lincoln Tunnel toll is $6 for car... higher for vans n' stuff.

Coming back from NY to NJ - there is no toll.

Re: new york city and newark trip

I assume you are talking about Washington D.C - yes it's doable - 4 hour drive. Take I-95 south straight down. Make sure you travel off peak hours - traffic is horrendous because you hit Philly and Baltimore trafric

No its $8 toll right now getting into NYC, but none on your way back. I would highly recommend just parking the rental at a garage in NJ near train station and riding train into the city. Traffic is crazy and you can stop and go as you choose to take pics etc. Just bundle up & wear layers...but be sure to have a scarf/gloves & hat...its really cold right now.

Like mentioned DC driv eis about 4 hours or more depending on holiday traffic...if you do go, try to leave at odd hours...like 3-4 in th emorning so you get less traffic. I would say since you are here for about a week, DC is very doable.

Oh another attraction in NY, I would say go checkout Central Park, the Wollman skating rink in the park is cheaper then Rockafeller Center skating. If you guys are into winter sports/activities, then a 2 hour drive to the Poconos in PA is a great idea...to Camel Back or Jack Frost I think its called ski resorts. You can even just go for a day and come back and enjoy winter sports like skiing, tubing, skating, hiking etc.

Re: new york city and newark trip

Is it okay to part at 66th Street and West End Avenue... on a Friday... ?

And if you do go to DC, most museums/must see attractions are free. I would recommend the Air & Space Museum there, and go to Adams Morgan area....i forget what street it was...full of ethnic restaurants, one of the places to be, and at night, most restaurants/lounges play music etc for like a $5 cover and its lots of fun

Re: new york city and newark trip

All very good suggestions Afro Sheen!

Camelback is great - even if you don't ski you can sit in the lodge with view of the slopes and drink coffee and take wonderful pictures.

 really? I’ve not crossed the border in past 4 months! but really - now it’s changed again!

heyyy thansk for the info guy.
$8. hmmmm
what u guys do fr new years eve. and is king king kebabe king good lol as the advert suggests and shalimar and shahnawaz palace.
