**PCB appoints Salman Butt as vice-captain **
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Sunday appointed opener Salman Butt as vice-captain to Shoaib Malik till the end of the year.
Butt replaced pacer Mohammad Asif who was deputy for the One-day series in Abu Dhabi against Sri Lanka in April.
Butt’s appointment came after the board’s ad-hoc committee met in Bhurban.
PCB chairman Naseem Ashraf justified the appointment of Butt for the remainder of the year saying it was a move aimed at securing the future of Pakistan cricket.
“We have to start planning for the future. We have lacked in this aspect and have never really prepared replacements. Malik and Butt are both young and compliment each other,” he said.
Ashraf said Butt was picked because he was more focused on the game and had returned to the team with new enthusiasm.
“Everybody believes he has a long future in the national team and is a safe bet to become a permanent opener in Tests and One-Day Internationals.”
The left-handed Butt was dropped last year and made a comeback in the recent Abu Dhabi series where he had scores of 34, 74 and 2.
But he has always been rated very highly by former players, including Javed Miandad.
Butt was chosen by the board especially to fly to Islamabad two years ago when US President George W Bush came to Pakistan and attended a cricket function.
Ashraf said Asif was a team man and had been informed of the decision.

could it be because of Asif and Jaywardene incident in Abu Dhabi that PCB decided to demote him?
There has to be a valid reason behind this otherwise it doesn't make any sense to appoint one person as VC and then replaciing him immediately. An unneccsarry move with could give rise to rift among young players.

'Planning for the future, picked because he had returned to the team with more enthusiasm', isn't this pretty much the exact same statements that PCB delivered when they chose Asif as vice-captain? If making Asif was such a mistake, then why make him in the first place? Why not appoint Butt from the beginning instead of treating this post as a joke? I just do not understand what could possibly be the motive behind this. At least stick to your decision for a few series (or until the end of the year, as they had put it). Stick to whom you have picked and let it be, why the sudden urgency in decision-making?
One plus point could be that they are taking steps in perhaps improving the image of the long-debated opening crisis and the appointment of Butt will only mean that he is being given an extended run to prove himself, in tough conditions. If those were their reasons from the start, the decision-making process should have run a lot smoother than it did.

Butt sounds much more mature than Malik in interviews to be honest. A few years down the line, hopefully Malik will be kicked out of the test side and Salman Butt will be the new captain, and we won't have a tullay baaz captain who does not even deserve a spot in the test team.

Maybe they told Asif before the beginning of Abu Dhabi series that our main option is Butt but we first wanna observe how he fares in his come back so you are temporary VC for now.
Even then they should have waited a bit more to make the move. At least after these two one dayers in scotland.

It's a good move to appoint Salman as Malik's Vice Captain. Salman has good leadership experience in the junior teams as well as his department side. He has a mature head on his shoulders and should compliment Malik well.
I think Asif's appointment was only a stop-gap to be honest...he shouldnt have any problems with the decision, and Salman's appointment till December is a good move - I have no doubt that his term will automatically be extended come december.

That actually makes the most sense. However, PCB needs a swift hard kick inthe behind for appointing Asif in the first place. They could have chose any youngster as temp. VC. Be it may, perhaps they wanted to try Asif and see.

No one knows why Asif is removed. It may have to do with his emotional outburst in Abu Dhabi, hence declaring him mentally unstable from PCB’s pov. 
It shows that management is still not thinking clearly. There was no need to remove Asif and appoint a vice captain aur woh bhi 6 maheenay kay liay..damagh kharab!
It’s about time PCB stops judging player on single inning performance.

Good move, PCB. Asif needs to concentrate more on his bowling. He is way too inexperienced to be a vice captain.

I was just switching channels tonight and came across Great aamer sohail's comment on geo super. He claimed that team is divided into two groups over Salman Butts appointment. But he supported his appointment and not the timing of it.
