New PAK airport terminal Allama Iqbal

Good! Development on the rise. I hope many national corporations lend a hand in making its market sector a little more attractive. Not the same old movies ki dukan or pan shops.

NYA bhaijaan, the name is spelled Loh. :-P And there are other theories on Lahore's origin as well.

Yeah Baby! :biggthumb:

NYA, ahmad answered ur fluke about the origin of Lahore.. So maybe it is you who need to know where Lahore is... Your perception of Lahore as a city does not look beyond 'heera mundi'... (reference, culture forum)

As for my itching in the back, maybe to cure your constant itching, we need to name it as Mirza 'Sir' Ahmadi from New York International Airport...

No one, but the usual Pakistani/Islam-haters would object to a name like Allama Iqbal International Airport... Any genuine Pakistanis objecting to this name, raise your hands...

No a side note, the existing airport in Islamabad has been successfully undergone a major rehaul... Even though they shouldnt have wasted money on the existing one, since they are making a new one...

Re: New PAK airport terminal Allama Iqbal

Wonderful news about the new terminal, Masha’Allah. :k: Hope i get an opportunity to see it if i ever visit Lahore in the future Insha’Allah.

:~) Also one of my favourite quotes… it’s by Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu.
An excellent choice for a quote.

Waste of money and time.
That money could have easily been spent to educate and provide sustainable development to the people.
One new airport terminal is not development.
Education, social infrastructure, basic necessities of life at affordable prices is development.
One airport terminal is a waste of money when these things are not fulfiled.

Spook,

I only corrected NYA on the spellings, not the history. I am sure someone somewhere spells the name of the son of Rama as Lo. Anyway, the most prevalent theory on the origin of Lahore is the one NYA mentioned.

Should it be named Allama Iqbal or anything ... I really don't care. People can call it Sultan Rahi Airport or even Musharaff Khan Gondal Airport. The important thing is that there is development going on. Usually the governments who are sensible name such "architecture" on less controversial people, so it stays that way.

Iqbal was indeed a great poet & philosopher and I have great respect for him. But there are others who did a lot more for the cause of Pakistan & Muslim cause. Secondly, I don't agree with those who categorically reject the roots of Pakistan being part of a subcontinent which was at a time predominantly Hindu. I feel that its their personal animosity which is far from the truth.

hmmm.... Allama Iqbal's resting place is in Lahore, is that a good enough reason for you NYA?

Ahmadjee Bhaijan, I like Sultan Rahi International Airport idea. Very original. Iqbal had done nothing for Lahore. Writing a few books on poetry don’t make one automatically entitled him/her to having landmarks named after.

Bao Lal Hussian has done more for Lahore and even Gama Pehlwan (and his brother Jhara) has made more contribution to Lahore than Iqbal.

Can anyone list a couple of things Iqbal has done for Lahore?

I think a couple of snack shops (e.g., Iqbal PakoRa Cornor; or Iqbal Dahi Bhalay, or Iqbal Tea Stall) can be named after him. But the main airport should be named after someone who has done something for Lahore.

Mughal-e-Azam, That’s why, I say that he has a got a Resting Place named after him, give other people a chance now. If resting place was a criteria, why not name is Miani Sahib International Airport?

I agree with NYA on this one. I don't think we need to have everything named after Iqbal, no matter how great he was. If everything is called Iqbal this or Iqbal that then the name loses it's value anyway. We need to give these places some individuality.

On the terminal itself, if there's a need for it then it's a good development and good news.

You guys fail to realize how important Iqbal and Jinnah were... They overshadowed everyone... Especially Jinnah, he was a lone wolf in the Pakistani bandwagon, and it was his great leadership that resulted in Pakistan, otherwise, the banyas would never have allowed a separate nation for us...

I strongly agree with you to improve educationa and health sectors,

but I dont agree with you when people say dont build motorways , airports?? why not?

you know how pakistani leadership do with resources.
the other things may remain same, atleast we have got something. and without this situation wouldnt be different. so somthing is better than nothing.

Has anyone seen this web site

Why are there pictures of New York City and Hong Kong Airport and not a single picture of inside Lahore Airport ? And many spelling mistakes on the website ? eg Future is spelt Feature

Got to laugh :rotfl:

Iqbal was not a Lahori, it should have been named after someone from Lahore, e.g., Gulab Devi International Airport, or Sir Ganga Ram International Airport.

Cool NYA that was a good idea. Lets leave the airport's name as it is and call the ladies and men's washrooms as Gulab Devi and Sir Nanga Ram Oops! Ganga. Ok are you happy now :D

Spock because you are not informed. And I doubt you even know where Lahore is. The city Lahore itself is named after Lo, son of Ram. That should give you some itching in your backside.

Musharraf inaugurates Allama Iqbal Airport

[thumb=B]1818mar2003-pic1.JPG[/thumb]

**President Gen Pervez Musharraf, Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool and Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi at the inauguration of Allama Iqbal International Airport here on Monday. **

LAHORE, March 17: **Lahore’s new Rs10-billion Allama Iqbal International Airport was inaugurated by President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Monday where he said the Civil Aviation Authority would also set up modern airports at Sialkot, Gwadar and Islamabad to accelerate the pace of economic development.

The new airport will have a capacity to handle 6.5 million passengers a year. **

In a brief written speech, the president, clad in his military uniform, said credit for planning the project went to the previous government. However, he said, his government should be credited for completing it, rather than shelving it, as was the practice in the past after a change of government, and saving as much as Rs3 billion by modifying the design.

The president invited foreign investors and entrepreneurs to benefit from the state-of-the-art aviation infrastructure developed in Pakistan.

He said foreign travellers gauged the socio-economic development of a country from the appearance of and facilities available at the airport where they landed first.

The president hoped that Pakistan in general and Lahore in particular would become the regional hub of aviation activities after inauguration of the new airport.

Governors Khalid Maqbool and Dr Ishratul Ibad, Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Husain, Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmud Kasuri, Defence Minister Rao Sikandar Iqbal, Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan, Labour Minister Abdus Sattar Lalika, Health Minister Nasir Khan, Adviser Shaukat Aziz, former law minister Dr Khalid Ranjha and a large number of officials were present at the ceremony.

**General Musharraf said he would look into a request by the CAA director-general for the allotment of additional 600 acres of land for future expansion of the airport. **

Editorial on the new Airport from the leadin’ newspaper, DAWN.

New Lahore airport

The inauguration yesterday of the new Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore comes as a long-awaited message of cheer for air travellers from Pakistan’s second metropolis. **The city can now consider itself truly on the international aviation map as a modern airline hub well equipped to meet the demands of a growing number of international airlines that already connect Lahore with the rest of the world. **

Constructed at a cost of Rs10.32 billion, the red-brick structure of the new terminal blends well with Lahore’s rich Mughal and Gothic architectural heritage. The terminal has seven boarding bridges, spacious transit lounges, 55 check-in counters, duty-free shops and other facilities of international standard.

It is expected to meet the air travel needs of the city and adjoining districts up to the year 2015 when aviation experts forecast an annual turnover of 6.5 million passengers per year as against the current 2.5 million.

The construction of the terminal was commissioned in 1998 and it was expected to be completed by 2000. It has had its due share of bureaucratic delays and snags associated with public projects, with the Civil Aviation Authority revising the building plan to cut corners and save money. Had the project been completed within the stipulated time, a good amount of money could have been saved. That said, the relatively young CAA has come a long way since its birth in 1982. It has upgraded ground facilities at many existing airports, built a number of new ones and opened up Pakistan’s skies to international aviation under a liberal ‘open skies’ policy.

The reduction offered in the landing and ground handling charges at the new terminal is a lesson well learnt from the bitter experience of the Jinnah Terminal in Karachi, which was abandoned by many international airlines because of a disproportionate increase in such charges some years ago. Hopefully, the new Lahore terminal will be able to lure some of these airlines back to Pakistan, which wanted flying rights to upcountry destinations where the majority of air travellers come from.

well its not waste, do you know how many air lines have cancelled thier routes via lahore just because the old airport didnt provide adequate facilites? it was too congested etc etc...

I agree other issues are important but its a land mark in itself. Job oppurtunites will increase etc etc. But yeah you are entitled to your opinion.

Yesterday i went to drop my cousin off and i witnessed the new airport first hand. It is a sheer beauty, architecture is quite lahori-ish and resembles mughal style. Facilites are A-one. Lets see if they keep up the standard which they couldnt maintain in Jinnah terminal’s case. :k: :jhanda:
