A lot depends on the hospital (or wherever else you decide upon) to give birth at. There's a lot of variation from hospital to hospital about what they will and will not provide. You should check with the maternity unit where you're registered and they should give you some guidelines.
You will probably need something like the following:
- big baggy t shirt or nightie (plus others for changing into after the baby is born of course)
- hairband to keep your hair off your face
- couple of flannels
- lots of change for the vending machines and phone etc
- cd's/dvds if you're allowed
- lots of water for drinking and spritzing
- an up to date list of phone numbers/ address book
- comfy large pillow (hospital ones are as flat as a pancake)
- camera
- nursing bra
- dressing gown and slippers
For the baby:
- a few babygros
- gloves and bootees
- shawl
- hat
- muslin clothes (burp clothes)
- newborn size nappies
- toiletries

Don't forget the Babys Car seat, or they wont let you take the baby home. Good Luck :)

The suggestions above are good ones. Also, add really comfy socks. And favorite snacks - lots of them. Even if the hospital food is good, new moms tend to turn into eating machines. I would get hungry 15 minutes after finishing a meal! And hospital diapers totally suck so newborn diapers are good to bring.

Shahreen had some very good suggestions. I also took along some miniature soap, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner cause I showered the next day. Some very comfy maternity clothes to go home in. And a cute going home outfit for baby. Remember baby's car seat also. I brought snacks, not just for myself but also for husband and grandmas.
Also take a robe because that hospital gown opens in the back.
A list of things right after baby is born? As soon as you bring baby home from the hospital he/she will probably be asleep and very soon after will be very hungry. Do you plan to nurse or formula feed? Some essential items I have are:
many washclothes and towels (10 +)
many blankets
onesies (short sleeve and long sleeve)
cotton pants
baby wash
bath tub or a bath mat
newborn diapers,wipes, rash lotion
socks, booties, caps
a couple sweaters, bunting.
saline spray, nasal aspirator, thermometer
nail clippers
mylecon drops for gas pain
a stroller or sling

So you don’t have to spend precious spare time doing laundry…although you will anyway no matter many towels etc you buy.

NEERA: I got 5 of these. You do not have to unbutton the bottom. I think they be great at nite to change diapers.

Hi again....yes even though the big event will be in June, bring along the socks. Its nice to have them on during the delivery, somehow it helps you feel less exposed if you know what I mean.

yes, newborns need socks even if born in the summer. Newborns come from a warm environment and they like to be kept warm.

I have over a dozen of these gowns. Used them for Safia and now with Maya but I don’t like them very much for a newborn. They do make nighttime diaper changes easier cause there’s less to snap and unsnap. But they don’t always cover the baby well and tend to be baggy. I liked them for Safia when she was around 3-5 months and the weather was warmer.
Towels… I have 10 because you never know when a surprise pee pee or spit up will happen. You go through so many clothes and blankets because of these little surprises. It’s better to be prepared with a good supply so you don’t have to do laundry everyday.
Neera is right. Newborns do need to be kept warm even in summer. I think the general rule is to dress your baby the same as you are dressed plus one more layer.
