New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

LAHORE: New captain and coach for the Pakistan cricket team will be named on May 7 and his appointment will be on series to series basis.

This was stated by the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Dr Nasim Ashraf, at a news conference here on Tuesday after a meeting of the ad-hoc committee which met for the first time after Pakistan’s debacle in the World Cup in the West Indies.

Also present were chief operating officer PCB, Shafqat Nagmi, and director marketing and communication, Dr Ahsan Malik.

Dr Nasim said the ad-hoc committee meeting could not finalise the name of the captain and coach as it does not want to act in haste and wants to conclude these issues after a thorough evaluation by recommending suitable candidates for the respective jobs.

***“Hopefully, the captain will be appointed on series to series basis while coach will be appointed on a two-year term,” he said.

“The ad-hoc committee was of the view that these positions be filled before the national team proceeds to Abu Dhabi to play a three match series against Sri Lanka. The proposed series is likely to be held from May 10-15,” he added.***

PCB chief said the captain will be appointed, who can fulfil the laid down criteria of justifying his place in the team based on his individual performances, meets prime fitness standards and have necessary leadership qualities to lead the side with pride. “We will not be making any compromise on these standards and even the players who will not be meeting required standards will not be getting a place, no matter how big or small they are in status,” he warned.

Dr Nasim Ashraf said the ad-hoc committee has also abolished all the pay categories (A, B and C) after cancellation of players’ contract.

“One thing is clear now; from now on only those players will be the part of the team who really deserve to be there and there would be no compromise on discipline as well,” he continued.

He said PCB will study players’ contracts of three to four cricket boards before finalising its own players’ contract.

He said the main coaching facility of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) has been named after Pakistan team’s late coach Bob Woolmer to pay him respect.

He said no decision was taken to appoint a paid selection committee and hopefully the matter will be settled down in the next meeting of the ad-hoc committee.

He said a modern media centre will be built in Gadaffi stadium while the offices inside the Gadaffi stadium will also be re-located and the space available will be utilised to have corporate boxes to generate money during the matches.

“We are in process to hire the services of a curator from South Africa to re-lay our pitches and we want to introduce a new culture of having lively wickets,” he said.

Let's talk about players in the team who can lay down criteria of justifying his place in the team based on his individual performances, meets prime fitness standards and have necessary leadership qualities to lead the side with pride.

Shoaib Akhtar can't seem to stay fit, so I guess he is out.

Salman and Malik can not lead from front or stay consistent, so they will be out if appointed captain.

I guess it will all come down to Yousuf and Younis. I think they will appoint Younis as the captain. Here is the question, if Younis fails as a batsman in a series, would he be out?

Disagree with that assumption. Younis has played over 150 ODIs and has never been consistent - the only reason his name is being mentioned for the Captaincy is because Imran Khan and Nasim Ashraff like him, and secondly he's a 'senior' player which automatically washes away any sins if you`re the PCB.

So while Younis will probably get the job, knowing the way the PCB works, I dont see that as being a good omen for Pak cricket. I think Salman would be a far better choice, as he has proved his leadership credentials throughout the Under 19, A-Team,Academy team, and his departmental team...plus he has a good temperament and should never have been out of the team in the first place...but thanks to Inzamam - another young cricketer was put out of the team for the wrong reasons.

Malik too has a good temperament...and if you look as his batting...he has always fought for his wicket...sure his consistency has gone away a bit but thats because he was pushed down to number 6 - a poor decision when you consider all his 100s have come at the 2 and 3 position.

Both these guys have my vote....they would be a fresh start - we dont need Yousef - which is basically Inzamam part 2- and Younis who is very over-rated and not captaincy material.

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

Salman has a lot of growing up to do. First of all, he cannot bat in seaming wickets, he has a mental block where he continues to give wickets in early over to slip fielders. Moreover, when was the last time he showed any leadership qualities? Leading 20/20 team on a flat track wicket makes you a contendor? Wow...first time I hear that.

Tell Salman to get his place in the team, he is one of the reason Pakistan lost series as he was unable to give us a decent start. About Inzamam, I think he stuck with him as much as you could think off, from ODI series with India to England Test series. When did Salman came through?

You excuses against Mullah is getting old. Get new talking points.

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

  1. Yeah...he needs to grow another 5 inches I would say.....:D

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

Can Younis bat on a seaming wicket? From what I recall, on seaming tracks in Mohali he was like a bunny caught under lights, and then followed that up with catching practice to slips during the south african series when the wickets were seaming, and then finally to the World Cup...and Ireland...out to a bowler who wasnt even miltary medium.....so please dont state that Salman Butt cant play on seaming wickets......Butt is a 22 year old whos only played 33 ODIS. Younis is a veteran who has been around since 2000 and still hasnt gotten on top of seaming tracks.

At least, Butt has the time and ability to work out his technical issues on seaming surfaces...for that matter everyone in the Pakistan team needs to fix that weakness...it wont happen overnight but it definately isent going to come from Younis Khan....if he cant fix that weakness after playing for 7 years...he's not gonna suddenly fix it in 2007.

Secondly, leading Under 19s on a 'flat track' doesent make you a contender...but it gives you valuable experience at leadership. A lot of people in the PCB have had a eye on him as a future Captain, and thats why they gave him the captaincy - same goes for his Lahore team, which had players like Farhat,Razzaq,Akmal, etc - Butt was given the captaincy ahead of all those guys.

Granted he had a poor time in England...but before that he helped Pakistan win a ODI game against the Indians...under preassure at Eden Gardens, got another 2 ODI 100's after that, plus a test 100 in Australia against the likes of Warne...

Inzamam dropped him and brought in Mohammad Hafeez of all people....how can you drop Butt for a player like Hafeez who averages 17.00 as an OPENER in ODI despite playing around 50 matches !!

It was bias pure and simple.

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

Give me a break, it was pathetic to watch him give his wicket in a similar fashion game after game from ODI series against India to Test series against England. Hafeez played really well in Australia with Pakistan A, thus he was selected.

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

Butt will probably be improved and no doubt likely to grow as a player and as person - by the time he reaches dopey Inzi's and the Younis Khan's age.....

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

Yes Hafeez certainly played well for the Pakistan A side in Australia and thus got selected. It was also pathetic to see him given continous run for his poor batting performance's by the so called captain of the team.

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

Hafeez played really well against Australia A? Give ME a break! If the criteria for selection is getting runs against an 'A' side...then the likes of Zahoor Elahi, Sajid Ali and Co would have been world beaters and international regulars...but guess what, they werent because back then...Captains knew the people who warranted places in the side arent the guys who get runs against A or B teams but the guys who can carry that performance into the international arena.

Incidentally, what did Hafeez do once he got into the team? From a 'brilliant' ODI average of 19.05 - he played another 20 odd ODIS since...got one fifty against the Windies in Pakistan and his average came down to 18.53. He should be opening for Sargodha's B team, not Pakistan.

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

So, how does the captain take the blame when the players are letting him down with their pathetic shots? All was required from Butt or Hafeez to stay on wicket and give a decent start.

If they can't play on seaming wickets or cannot match the merit of domestic cricket, it is not captain's fault. Board, selection and demoestic cricket is to be blamed.

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

The Captain drops the player - who after having been given numerous chances...still does not deliver. Butt was dropped after a poor run which did not even mirror the atrocious batting by Hafeez...yet Hafeez was kept with the team and played time and time again......again bias and another example of Inzamam's pathetic captaincy and his habit of putting friendship before performance.

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

:k:

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

…and how do you know this inside information? Jeez, after Inzamam has retired and out of captaincy you cannot even leave a thread from his discussion.

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

Doesn't mean if he has retired and no longer captain he can't be discussed especially an opportunuity to blast him.............

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

Yes, the bias way…keep it up and open another thread.:k:

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

What friendship? it was Inzi who dropped Hafeez in the first place which paved way for "catch me in the slips" Butt to come into the team.

Re: New captain, coach to be announced on 7th May

Nope. Catch me in the slips was Farhat. Incidentally, those people who are trying to go after Butt just need to compare records, between Butt, Hafeez, Farhat, Taufiq Umar, Yasir Hameed etc - and you'll see who the superior opener is - Butt. He was out of the team for Tableeghi Inzamam's bias - pure and simple. Maybe Inzamam didnt like him cos he speaks English and went to Lahore Grammar School instead of Multan's Tableeghi centre! Kher, now Inzy is thankfully gone, and with him so is Hafeez..full stop.
