Re: Netherlands to ban halal and kosher meat
You said “People who don’t want to ‘cause pain’ should stop ‘consuming’ them…”
Then you said that vegetarianism should not be forced on people.
So if “stopping pain” means stopping the consumption of animals, then does NOT wanting to stop consuming animals mean NOT wanting to stop pain? So anyone then who is not a vegetarian is supporting cruelty through pain on animals?
I dont recall the Koran ever telling us that we shouldn’t cause pain on animals, EXCEPT when sacrificing them. I think the Koran teaches us to AVOID cruelty and pain on all creatures wherever possible. The injunction that we should avoid cruelty should logically apply in all situation where we have the MEANS to avoid such pain. another words, if we can find a way to slaughter animals while minimizing their suffering and still upholding the criteria for something being halal, then the Korans injunction that we should avoid cruelty should make it incumbent on us to explore such means.
And yes I agree that no one has a right to force anyone else to adopt any kind of ideal etc. But some things are just good ideas. For whatever its worth, atleast the Netherlands govts initiative has started some sort of dialogue on the issue.
