Need tips on improving wardrobe

I don’t have many clothes. Somehow whenever I go buy something, it looks good on the rack but at home it looks so blah. I dress very casually, most of the time I’ll just be wearing some cotton gypsy type skirt and a shirt or jeans with kameezein with a plaid shirt and then a sweat shirt on top with sneakers. yeah i know, it sounds absolutely horrible! I want to improve how I dress but I don’t feel comfortable in stuff that’s more flashy and pretty. But i guess i wanna look better. and i can’t even afford to buy new stuff. and plus my husband is coming to visit in December so you know… I don’t wanna look my usual slob self.

plus I don’t have many shalwar kameezes. They’re all old and crappy cuz I haven’t gone to Pakistan to buy them. So Iwear my sister’s sometimes but she’s several sizes bigger than me, so I still look like a slob!

A lot of my friends also wear a kameez over jeans. What looks really great is if you wear a kmeez over black work pants.I mean that way it looks simple -yet elegant.

Oh yeah and get rid of the sneakers.Instead, get some comfy black shoes. They'll go with anything. And skirts are fine, but wear some pale shirt with them and try a trench coat over it.Again its simple but sophisticated.

Arrite, I may be fat but damnit I know how to dress.

Do not wear the first two, you are NOT 40.

The latter three, the coats etc show off your shape and add umph if you havnt got anything to add umph to, nome sayin, and they also cover undesireable areas.

One look that never goes amiss is simlicity with accesories.ie, a simple pant shirt combo which FIT WELL and then the shoes, bags and necklace/belt can be either toned up or down to match the occasion.

The beautiful thing about accesories is you can borrow anyones so u dont necessacarily have to buy all of them, and if you go to flea markets etc then you get them original and cheap.

All of my jewellery is under £1.00 and all of it is amazing, I have gorgeous jewellery, but you have to show around for it.

The pant shirt example, is as thus. Buy some nice fitting trousers, hipstered/ silghtly flared perhaps, whatever suits your body shape, I'm not aware exactly. And if youare not sure then just try on several until you find a pair that fall on your body the way you want.

The blouses too can be plain, with one or two taht are slightly more dressy. This with some flat ballet pumps or flat sling back kitten heels would look great in the morning, add a snzzy belt, dazling earings and a necklace and you are also set for the evening.

Tanktops on top of a plain blouse is annother way of variating your outfit without spending too much.

What were you thinking with the plaid?

I always buy in sales, and buy basic. you only need one or two "special" things if you are used to jeans and sweats,

Btw its not just you with the hanger thing, you just have to shop around a little and find out what suits you best.

Hope this helps :=p

I've recently tried to do the same, Sarah.

I think the key is to find clothes that feel unique. A piece that actually stands out on its own, rather than feeling generic. And along with those, have a few nice basics.

Khakis, nice black pants, a pinstripe, comfy jeans, denim or cordoroy skirts with a nice shape to them; things you can coordinate with the more fun, frilly, silly, elegant pieces you buy.

Annother look I'm really "into" so to speak aaj kal is wearing a flared skirt with boots, that way no leg is shown and u also look very good. In the pics you posted you looked very slim, you'd be able to get away with more stuff.

The shalwar kameez thing I totally empathise with, I have no shalwar/kamezes, I have to steal off various members of my family, and thus I never match.

Mamas kameez, my little sisters shalwar and someone elses dupatta, but I always find its so much more fun than wearing my own :=p

Hiccy the first two are just fine.:snooty: Sarah wears a hijab so I thought she might like them- I do anyway.

And the trench coats usually (if not always ) come with belts. The trick is to not tie it up- unless you wish to show off a great shape. If left open it looks great.(wear them over a kameez—kameez and trench coat have to be same length - or over a shirt).

Jewlery -I think keeping it simple looks better than too much. And yes shoes and handbag are a MUST.Buy shoes in dark colours so you can wear them with most outfits- but try shoes/sandals that look hip.I mean if your outfit is simple a nice handbag and shoes can do wonders. And the outfits I posted go perfect with a hijab.

and yes hiccy Im in love with skirts and boots.High heeled that go up to the knees, and a skirt.

how’d u figure that when their heads are cut off :=p

I bought that black coat that MQ posted, the last one. But nobody thought to warn me it looks better on tall thin people! I am curvy and my bum is big so it looks okay on me, not dynamite, just okay.

I have a lot of jewellery and pretty heels so I can totter around them in front of the hubby at home (how gay but in December in -30 weather, heels are a big no no).

I never know what looks good on me. I want to get something that will knock his socks off. Something that will suit my body shape (top and bottom heavy). I have tried those formal work type pants and they do not look good on me because my thighs are kinda big. I did see this black pair of pants that fit very very well and make me look really good so I'll get those and a pair of jeans. I have boots hmm. So I guess I need shirts. What kind should I get?

Well don't buy blouses. It's practically winter and they have some really nice sweaters/funky turtlenecks out there. Anything from 'V' neck tops to those new turtlenecks that have buttons diagnolly up the neck (so you can wear it open or closed) to sweaters that come with a belt to tie around your waist. Just try on different styles and see what suits your build.

For pants, on shorter, voluptuous females, I always think fitted hipsters that have a straight leg or a slight flare look good. Just make sure the material isn't stretchy or else it will be clingy which isn't nice. That goes for sweaters too.

Accessories like shawls can also work with certain outfits (if you don't want to wear a coat).

sarah… http://www.gupistan.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=165063 i hope those help, even if they’re just crappy illustrations

i love hiccups suggestions  i cant buy anything for months…

sarah.. something i love doing is.. buying a dress that goes upto my knees or even above it and matching it with a nice cardigan.. and wearing that over jeans.. i know it sounds ullkh.. but it does look quite nice… especially if you can fin d anice black dress…

and shawls!! i agree with mehnaz.. u can wear them whenever you want if u dont want to do the overcoat thing.. plus they look ever so classy…

Hiccup, when I suggested the knee length boots and flared skirt to you a few months back, you didn’t like it. What changed? :hoonh:

My agreement. (Btw did I mention Im in love with trench coats.)

o miss "i know how to dress" hiccup, out of all the ones in the pics, i LOVED the first one, and i reckon it would suit a young girl in her late teens to late twenties just fine. ofcourse if ur a 3 tonn truck, it wont go well :p

thats just becasue you have crap taste :=p

amnd trucks and being well predented aren’t mutaully exclusive.

Mehnaz :=p um :blush:

sadzz I have the same problem, this winter will be so unfashionable for me. O woe :=p

Ive invested in a couple of cute dresses with jeans too btw. very 2005 :roman:

These are more Spring than Autumn (and some are for a slightly older look), but they might give you some ideas:

Also, I LOVE the dress on top of jeans look.

if you are heavy in the hips then definitely stay away from any coats which reach that length cos they will emphasize them.

and the dress on jeans look is whats hip in pk nowadays. only they are called kurtis and are traditionally embroidered short kameezes with jeans.

id say go for a long dress, boots and a nice little something ontop, short jacket. the open sweater ontop of a plain one is a slimming trick

and if you are short stay far far away from the flared bellbottoms. they are never flattering. the straight pants give height. combined with a short shirt on top. stick to basic colours. nothing too overdone.

the poncho look is also something u should consider

Basically, v-necks and wrapovers look good as do longer line and slightly fitted jackets, A-line skirts and straight trousers minus any details.

Maybe it’s just me but I’m finding it harder to buy decent clothes that look good. But I just love these wraparound dresses and tops which can always be dressed down/up with jeans, trousers etc. The kaftan is just amazing. Can’t afford it though. But I reckon sometimes, or even the one time, its good to pay out for something that makes you feel really good.
