need some help

i am an upcoming makeup artist here in toronto, can anyone tell me as to how do i approach people and how do i publize myself??

Re: need some help

find ppl who r in dire need of makeup and offer them your services at minimal charge and since i’m married, i don’t need makeup anymore. :chai:

PS:
flyers?
website?
adds in local newspapers
etc…

Re: need some help

I own a designer boutique in Edison, NJ (Raaz) and I can help you get started.

  1. Best is word of mouth. Talk to all you run into daily about your service. Also, ask your clients to refer to their friends and family

  2. You must advertise in South Asian mags, newspapers. Even a business card ad with special rates is enough. You have to continuously do for at least one year.

  3. Network. Visit all local clothing stores, Jewlery, DJ's, wedding supply, caterer, etc and ask them if they can refer you to their customer. Offer them first two free service so they can start refering to their clients.

Hope this will help you get going. Love to hear from you on how you are progressing.

Re: need some help

Wedding season is coming!! There are always "Wedding Bazaars", where all wedding related companies get together at a wedding venue and set up a show table. They typically offer prizes, have flyers and/or business cards. You could select someone attending the show for a make-up session to show your skill or at least have some big photo displays of before-and-after.

Local hair salons may be a great opportunity for you also. If you stop by a few of them and introduce yourself, you may get some good business that way. Same goes for photographers.

Best of luck to you!

Re: need some help

I have seen lots of makeup artists and fashion designer hanging out at local fashion shows and photo shoots.
they get contacts of models, photographers etc and do makeup for free for both the photoshoots and the shows.. and start posting them online everywhere.. its a free publicity for everyone..
and once people start knowing you... you are ready to launch..
i hope this helps..

The thing is i have recently graduated from one of the topmakeup schools here in toronto, i have a basic kit from the school, now do u think i should start off with what i have or start buying those expensive brands when i am totally new and dont know if this is gona work or not??? also these people advising customers to get makeup done only from experienced people doesnt seem fair to me, koz if no one gives me a chance then what?????? anyway for all those of you interested to get some makeup done, my name is amna, i live here in toronto, and i have always had the passion to be a makeup artist, as i love makeup, so i went to a school here tolearn more about it and here i am now, looking for people to atleast give me a chance.......i am targeting pakistani/indian girls..............

Re: need some help

I think you should list your info on internet yellow pages and advertise yourself in local newspapers. Toronto is full of desis....If you're new you should offer discounts/free trials. Website would be great too!

Re: need some help

Maybe try promoting your services on other forums and websites - i.e Facebook, Hi5, Asian Directories.. etc.

Re: need some help

Most makeup artists/salons usually include duputta and jewelery setting in their cost, as well as hair and makeup. They might add extra if using extensions or fake eyelashes etc.

well it makes sense, because its ur wedding and u want to be in trusted hands! and they use more than one brand b/c different brands will have different types of foundation etc.

I think, you should slowly add to it. start off with the basics i guess, a good primer and foundation.....

also these people advising customers to get makeup done only from experienced people doesnt seem fair to me, koz if no one gives me a chance then what??????
[/quote]

i know it doens't seem fair but think abt it, if u were getting married, would u want a fresh out of school girl to do all ur makeup and stuff? no, u'd go with someone trusted. I guess u can start first by advertising heavily, as well as having reasonable (i.e., LOW) rates for party makeup. u can also try giving lessons for every day makeup, and even if u don't have real brides, u can maybe get some frends to help you out by dressing them up like real brides and doing their makeup.
