thanks you guys for the help...... i am getting a business card printed soon.....also wana make a simple flyer.......but do u think if i do a bride iw ill have to do the other stuff like setting jewlry, dupatta etc? do i charge for it? secondly, i read on a website, where some one has advised customers to get makeup dont ONLY from some one who has some years experience and some one who uses more than one brand. The thing is i have recently graduated from one of the topmakeup schools here in toronto, i have a basic kit from the school, now do u think i should start off with what i have or start buying those expensive brands when i am totally new and dont know if this is gona work or not??? also these people advising customers to get makeup done only from experienced people doesnt seem fair to me, koz if no one gives me a chance then what?????? anyway for all those of you interested to get some makeup done, my name is amna, i live here in toronto, and i have always had the passion to be a makeup artist, as i love makeup, so i went to a school here tolearn more about it and here i am now, looking for people to atleast give me a chance.......i am targeting pakistani/indian girls..............
1st: the reason for why you cant upload might be that u dont have enough post.
2nd: one of my friends started also as a makeup artist about a year ago... she started with doing makeup on her friends diff styles.. party makeup and made them dulhans... just for fun at home... took pictures of differents styles/types of makeup and then made an album to show her new customers the diff styles of makeup (traditional , modern, party, model and so on)
in that way the customer didnt "run away" cause she was new into the buisness... also remember to have pictures of both young girls and elder aunties... that way you can show that you can make it look good no matter age/ skin colour / skin problems...
also u can send messages like sms around to your friends with shorlty introduction about u and what kind of makeup you provide and contact no. /website or whatever the customer can do to get in touch with you.
and then make your friends to forward that message to their friends... in that way you can reach ppl you dont even know.
another thing you can do if you know a jeweller or any boutique wale then when you are doing makeup on your friends , try to ask if you can borrow the clothes from boutique wale or some jewellery from the jeweller, take pictures and then they can show their customer their product and at the same time introduce the makeup OR you can in the bottom of the picture make an add saying makeup done by XXX... and contact no.

yeah that sounds good, but i do not have too many friends here hahahah......thats the funny part, i have been here since only 2 years, and i just have one or 2 friends that it..........so that kinda sucks.........
i cant come to NY i live here in toronto with my husband and i am settled here hehehe.....thats for the advice though.........
i understand when u say that no one wants to get makeup done from someone new, but then whats the solution, is this the only solution that i put up pictures of friends dressing them as brides???? that to me isnt fair either.........i dont mind somebody getting makeup done for just a party for a start.........
i am thinking of giving a free trial and free consultation, in that case if someone doesnt like me in a trial they can simply not hire me.......but if they hire me then i want a good price........
i am still not sure what to charge for party makeup, engagement makeup.......some makeup artists charge 65$ some more, so i dont know what exactly the market rate is...........can anyone suggest?????
also some one here in canada does something called soft touch makeup which is very light makeup, so i can do that too very well.........how much do i charge for that???

i really truly understand about the bridal thingi, but if someone doesnt wana get a bridal done from me they can atleast get some event makeup done, or party makeup or something..........i am gona advertise myself soon i am making my pamphlet and business card........i just fail to understand how do new people make their place........by doing stuff on friends????

i am an upcoming makeup artist here in toronto, can anyone tell me as to how do i approach people and how do i publize myself??
create a portfolio, just as you'd make a resume. Find friends who are willing to let you do their makeup, hair, etc and then you should take pictures of them. Next, spread the word! Tell your family and friends to look out for any local events and volunteer to do their makeup. IMO you should do their makeup for free so that they are willing to let you do make up on them, especially since ur new and they might be hesitant (but none of us will turn down a free offer! ;)
i guess you can start from there..if more and more people get to know about you the better chances you'll have of being well known. hope that helped? =)

amna, just because the rate is $65 is the market doesnt mean you should be charging the same! even though, you should be aware of the current rates, keep in mind that in order for you to make a place in the market for urself you need to have distinct ideas, price strategies, etc. You want to attract customers, so i'd say go with low prices as a start.

you NEED to go with low prices at first..and not just that..do makeup for free on some people at first..if they like your work they'll come to you again even if you charge MORE that the normal rate in the future

You should work on your friends of family members and take pics then make yourself a portfolio so people can see your work that way it helps them to know what your make up style is.

Hun u have to start somewhere! You seem pretty legitimate...
Why do u not feel it's fair to dress up ur friends as brides? alot of ppl use models in advertising, that's not unethical or unfair. if all ur friends are very private about their pictures/wera hijab etc u can always advertise for other girls who are looking to make extra money or trying to get into modeling... and like someone said, its a good idea to get a "variety" of ages and sizes, to really show off ur skills... In fact, i find that using already young, slim pretty girls and then airbrushing the hell outta them, more unfair........
I had party makeup done by someone who started advertising right here and she did a really good job, in fact she pretty much did all of our makeup and hair for all 3 days (of wedding). she charged $35 for party makeup and 15-50 for hair, depending on the style and length. Dimple shah and shirley wu i think they charge about $100 just for party hair and makeup...but they are much more well known and established, so i hope this gives u an idea of what the rates u should charge.
oh another suggestion, if u do threading and manicure pedicure stuff and waxing, u can also try advertising that...usually a person will come in for those services and then relize taht u offer more...
and i'm serious abt NY, you're facing ALOT of competition in Toronto, since u have ppl like shirley, and dimple and xpressions and saba malik and pinky's and zebi's and abt a dozen others. NY, u have very little competition, and i know for sure ther eis a big demand for decent bridal makeup here!

ok i get some idea about the prices, so that means when i am makin g pamphlet i should put up lower prices, do u think i should write something about myself in the pamphlet?? like new makeup artist graduated from this this school bla bla, or just write qualified makeup artist and then the services ia m offering with low prices???

i have a question sarah, i am sorry i keep asking questions and some are really idiotic, but its only for my own knowledge.......u said u got party makeup done from some one, so where did u find that person? i mean where had she advertised? in desi store, newspaper??? and did she come to ur place to do the makeup???
also what kind of makeup does she do?? i am asking u just to get an idea, koz i am about to advertise too......i am just working on the prices........i atleast wana charge $40 for party, egnagment , event makeup, koz at the end of the day, my products are being used.....
